A MacBook Pro battery that no longer holds enough charge turns every outing into a search for an outlet. You have three replacement routes: Apple, a repair provider, or Self Service Repair for experienced electronics repairers with supported models. Start with the battery condition, then choose the service or repair procedure that fits your exact Mac.

Check whether your battery needs service

If your MacBook Pro runs out of power sooner than it used to, check its battery condition. macOS flags reduced capacity or abnormal battery operation.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.

Inspect Battery Health. A Service Recommended message means the battery has reduced capacity or is not functioning normally.

Arrange a battery assessment if you see that message. This check helps you decide whether to seek service; changing a setting does not replace the battery.

Arrange a replacement through Apple or a repair provider

For a professional replacement, start with your coverage. Open Apple's Mac laptop repair page and select Get started.

Sign in with your Apple Account to access your coverage. With applicable active AppleCare coverage, Apple replaces an eligible battery without an additional charge when its capacity drops below 80%. Eligibility is assessed during service.

For an Apple Store appointment, open Apple's Genius Bar page and select Get started.

Sign in with your Apple Account.

Follow the onscreen prompts to make a Genius Bar reservation at a nearby Apple Store. A technician assesses the battery and gives you a repair estimate. Walk-in help is also available when a technician is free.

For an Apple Authorized Service Provider, enter your location in Apple's service locator.

Select Mac and run the search.

Contact a listed provider to arrange an assessment and confirm its estimate and parts availability. Authorized providers handle eligible warranty and AppleCare repairs.

For mail-in service, request that option through Apple's Mac laptop repair page when offered. Apple supplies a prepaid shipping box with preparation, packaging, and shipping instructions.

If Apple or an authorized provider cannot arrange the replacement, contact an independent provider that uses genuine Apple parts. Request an estimate and confirmation of exact model compatibility, parts availability, and the provider's own repair warranty. This route is not an Apple-authorized warranty or AppleCare repair.

Get your Mac ready for its appointment

Once service is arranged, prepare your Mac for the handoff.

  1. 1.Back up your Mac before service.
  2. 2.For an eligible repair on macOS 27 or later, open Find My and select your Mac. Under Settings, choose Repair or Trade In > Enable and authenticate with your Apple Account password. This keeps Find My enabled during repair; follow Apple's or your authorized provider's eligibility guidance.
  3. 3.On macOS 26 or earlier, turn off Find My Mac. If the Mac is unusable, remove it through iCloud.com/find on another device, following Apple's service-preparation instructions.
  4. 4.For an Intel Mac with a firmware password, turn that password off if possible.
  5. 5.Bring your Mac and power cord to an Apple Store appointment. For mail-in service, follow the supplied packaging and shipping instructions.

Match a DIY repair to your exact model

The correct manual keeps you on the repair procedure your Mac actually supports.

Open Apple's Mac documentation page.

Select your exact MacBook Pro model. Screen size alone is not enough.

Open its Repair Manual.

Read Introduction.

Read Battery Safety.

Read First Steps before ordering anything.

Locate the model's Battery or Top Case with Battery and Keyboard procedure. The 14-inch M5 and the 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max support both battery-only and top-case replacement. The 13-inch M1 from 2020 and the 16-inch 2024 model have an assembly procedure rather than a standalone battery procedure.

Open Apple's Self Service Repair page. This program is intended for experienced electronics repairers performing supported out-of-warranty repairs. Eligible models, parts, and tools vary by country.

Obtain the manual ID from your model's repair manual.

Follow Order parts and tools for an Apple product repair to the Self Service Repair Store.

Purchase the genuine replacement part specified in the manual.

Rent or buy the specified tools.

For M5 models, complete the battery discharge first

Battery-only removal on the 14-inch M5 and the 14-inch or 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max requires Apple's Battery Drain Tool to bring the battery to 30%. Complete this preparation before opening the Mac.

Remove any protective case.

Disconnect the power adapter. Keep it disconnected until the repair is complete.

Place the Mac on a ventilated, hard, flat surface.

With the Mac shut down, hold the power/Touch ID button until Loading startup options... appears.

Release the button.

At startup options, hold Command-D.

At Diagnostics & Repair, select Continue.

Connect to Wi-Fi if needed.

Accept the terms.

Run the Battery Drain Tool suite.

Wait for completion. Apple allows up to 2.5 hours for this process.

If the suite fails, use your model's Top Case with Battery and Keyboard replacement procedure instead of extracting the battery. Arrange that assembly replacement with a repair provider if it exceeds your repair experience.

Replace the battery using the illustrated procedure

Your model's procedure replaces either the battery alone or the larger assembly containing it.

Keep your exact model's illustrated procedure open throughout the job: 14-inch M5, 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, or 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max. Follow its complete safety instructions, connector details, adhesive sequence, fastener specifications, and tool requirements.

Complete every prerequisite removal linked in that procedure. For the 14-inch M5 battery-only route, these include the bottom case and BMU flex cable. The M5 Pro and M5 Max procedures have their own cover, fastener, and cable instructions.

If the battery is dented, expanded, punctured or otherwise physically damaged on any of these three models, stop the repair and don't remove the battery. Each procedure directs you to the Top Case with Battery and Keyboard replacement instead.

For battery-only replacement, remove the battery screws and battery cover in the exact order your manual shows. On the 14-inch M5 and the 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, remove the battery screw, then the battery cover. On the 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, remove one battery screw, then the cover, then the second screw.

Release the stretch-release adhesive in the illustrated sequence.

If an adhesive tab or strip breaks, follow the broken-adhesive procedure linked in your model's manual.

Lift out the battery assembly as directed.

Clean the residual adhesive from the top case as instructed.

Transfer the BMU flex cable when your model's procedure directs it. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max procedures include this step.

Install the replacement battery using the specified alignment and pressing tools. All three procedures require battery alignment pins, a battery press plate, and an adhesive activation roller; follow your model's pressing and rolling pattern exactly.

Reinstall the battery cover, battery screws, and BMU flex cable in your manual's exact order, which differs by model. On the 14-inch M5, place the cover and reinstall the battery screw at 20.5 Ncm, then reinstall the BMU flex cable. On the 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, place the cover and reinstall the BMU flex cable, then reinstall the battery screw at 16 Ncm. On the 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, reinstall the BMU flex cable, then one battery screw at 13 Ncm, then the cover and the second screw. These torque values are not interchangeable.

Reinstall the bottom case according to the manual.

For a replacement top case, follow the model's Top Case with Battery and Keyboard component-transfer and reassembly order instead of the battery-only sequence. This route involves substantially more component removal. Apple provides separate procedures for the 14-inch M5, 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max, and 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max.

Perform any postrepair process required for your specific repair. Repair Assistant is not a universal battery-calibration requirement, and Apple does not list a standalone MacBook Pro battery as a qualifying part.

Return the replaced part for recycling through the Self Service Repair process.
