A Reel just zipped past the detail you wanted to read. On Instagram’s tap-to-pause interface for iPhone and Android, one tap pauses the video and another resumes it. Here’s how to use that gesture, handle differences between accounts, and get playback controls on your computer.

Tap once to pause on iPhone or Android

This stops the Reel without keeping your finger on the screen.

Open the Reel you want to watch in Instagram.

Tap once on the video to pause it. There’s no setting to enable first.

Tap the video again when you’re ready to resume.

Instagram announced this interaction in March 2026 for its iOS and Android apps. It works as a gesture on the video, rather than an option you select from a menu.

Sound has a separate control in this interface. Once the Reel is paused, a speaker/mute icon appears above the play button, so you can cut the audio without resuming playback. Tapping the video itself pauses or resumes the Reel.

Use playback controls in desktop Chrome

The developer documents a playback bar in Instagram Video Controls version 1.1.3, an optional third-party extension for desktop Chrome that isn’t published or supported by Instagram.

Install Instagram Video Controls from its developer’s Chrome Web Store listing.

The link opens the extension’s product page, rather than a direct download file. The extension is optional and is not published by Meta.

Open a Reel on Instagram’s website in Chrome.

Hover over the video to reveal the extension’s playback bar.

Click the play/pause button to pause the video.

Click the play/pause button again to resume.

These steps come from the extension developer’s current listing. Its playback controls were not independently tested, so the documented behavior should be understood as the developer’s description of the extension.

If tapping changes the sound instead

Instagram announced single-tap pausing in March 2026, but controls still differ between accounts. In the tap-to-pause interface, tapping the video controls playback, while the separate speaker/mute icon controls sound.

The press-and-hold advice in older guides describes the previous mobile interaction, where releasing your finger resumed playback. Holding is no longer a pause gesture: press and hold the left or right side of a Reel and it plays at 2x speed until you let go.

That older interaction required keeping your finger on the playing video to hold it paused. Instagram reassigned the gesture to fast-forwarding rather than announcing its removal, so a single tap is the control to use on iPhone and Android.

Instagram hasn’t published a minimum app version that guarantees identical controls on every account. If your phone’s controls differ, use Instagram Video Controls in desktop Chrome for a separate way to pause.

No verified app, system, or account setting changes the pause gesture. An app update also cannot be presented as a guarantee that every account will show identical playback controls.

Pause with the Space key

This pauses desktop playback with a keyboard shortcut supplied by Instagram Video Controls.

Open a Reel on Instagram’s website in desktop Chrome with the extension installed.

Press Space while the Reel is playing to pause it.

Press Space again to resume playback.

The developer documents this shortcut for the video being watched. It does not establish Space as a built-in Instagram shortcut, so these instructions apply to playback with the extension installed.

Where the mobile instructions apply

The supported single-tap instructions concern Instagram’s iOS and Android tap-to-pause interface.

Instagram also supports TV viewing and casting, but Meta’s announcement does not provide exact pause-button or voice-command instructions. The phone gesture should not be treated as a verified instruction for those viewing options.

A Facebook copy gives you another option

If the creator also shared the Reel on Facebook, the Facebook app on iPhone or Android lets you pause that copy without changing playback in the original Instagram player.

Open the Facebook copy of the Reel in Facebook’s fullscreen video player.

Tap the video to reveal its playback controls.

Select the pause icon.

This option depends on the same content being available on Facebook. The controls belong to Facebook’s fullscreen player and operate on the copy you opened there.
