Older Minecraft tutorials can make the composter recipe look wrong because they still mention fences and planks. In current Minecraft, the Survival recipe uses seven wooden slabs in a U shape at a crafting table. Here is the clean path to craft one, find one, or add one with Creative mode or commands.

Craft a composter with wooden slabs

This fixes the normal Survival case where you need to make a composter from current materials. Gather or craft seven wooden slabs, then open a Crafting Table.

Place three slabs down the left column of the crafting grid. Place three slabs down the right column of the crafting grid. Put the seventh slab in the bottom-middle slot.

Leave the top-middle and center slots empty. Select the Composter result, then move the Composter into your inventory.

Use the Recipe Book for a faster craft

The Recipe Book can fill the composter recipe when the recipe is available and you already have seven wooden slabs in your inventory.

Open a Crafting Table. The composter is a 3x3 recipe, so the smaller grid in your Inventory cannot craft it even if the Recipe Book there shows it. Open the Recipe Book, search for Composter, then select the Composter recipe. Craft the result and move it into your inventory.

If this method fails, use the manual Crafting Table recipe with seven wooden slabs in the U-shaped layout.

Take a composter from a village

Find a village with a farmer workstation area. Look for the Composter around that farmer area, then break or mine the Composter.

Pick up the dropped Composter item and place the Composter where you want it. This gets you the block without crafting, but it starts with finding a village.

When the recipe does not work

The most common cause is an older recipe that uses four fences and three planks. Ignore that recipe in current Minecraft. The supported recipe uses seven wooden slabs: three on the left, three on the right, and one in the bottom-middle slot. If the Recipe Book does not show the composter, craft it manually at a Crafting Table with the same U-shaped slab layout.

Get a composter in Creative mode

This fixes the case where you have Creative access and want the block immediately. Switch to or create a world in Creative mode, then open the Creative Inventory.

Use Search and type Composter. Move the Composter to your hotbar or inventory, then place the Composter in the world.

Use the give command

Enable cheats or use a world where you have operator or admin-level command access. Open Chat in game. @s means yourself, and it only resolves when a player runs the command.

Run /give @s minecraft:composter 1. From a server console, use your username in place of @s. Find the Composter in your inventory, then place the Composter like any other block.

Use /give when you want the item in your inventory instead of placing the block directly into the world.

Place one directly with setblock

This method applies when commands are enabled and you want to put a composter at a specific location immediately. It changes a block in the world instead of adding the item to your inventory.

Open Chat or the command line with cheats or the needed command permissions enabled. Run /setblock <x y z> minecraft:composter with the coordinates you want to use. Run /setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:composter only when you want to target your current position, and choose coordinates carefully so you do not replace yourself or another important block.

Unlock the recipe with a command

This fixes the case where recipe availability is blocking the Recipe Book path. Enable cheats or use the required command permissions. Open Chat in game, since @s only resolves to yourself when a player runs the command.

Run /recipe give @s minecraft:composter. From a server console, put your username where @s is. Open a Crafting Table or the Recipe Book, then craft the Composter with seven wooden slabs.

Skip the old fences and planks recipe

Older guides may tell you to craft a composter with four fences and three planks. Do not use that recipe for current Java 26.2 or Bedrock 26.40 crafting. Use seven wooden slabs in the U-shaped Crafting Table layout instead. When an old tutorial disagrees with the in-game result, use the slab recipe.
