You open too many apps, the computer slows down, and adding RAM looks like the obvious fix. The real work is making sure your exact desktop or laptop supports removable memory before you buy anything. Start with compatibility, then install the module, confirm the new total, and test the system before calling the upgrade done.

Check your computer before buying RAM

Find the exact model first. For a Dell PC, go to Dell Support, identify the computer with the Service Tag or Express Service Code, then open the model documentation.

Check the memory type, generation, slot count, and maximum capacity in that model documentation.

Confirm that the RAM is removable. Dell says some laptops have memory integrated into the system board, which means there is no RAM upgrade to install.

Use Crucial as a compatibility-shopping shortcut. Go to Crucial upgrades, open Upgrade Selector, choose Select your computer, select the manufacturer and model, then review the compatible memory upgrades.

For Dell systems, identify the computer on Dell Support, open Parts and Accessories, choose Memory, and buy the listed compatible module.

Tip: treat the manufacturer service manual as the final word on slot order, maximum capacity, and serviceability.

Prepare the PC before opening it

Do this before internal RAM work on a Windows desktop or laptop, especially when BitLocker or Device Encryption is active. A hardware change can trigger a recovery-key prompt.

Back up the BitLocker recovery key first. From Start, type BitLocker, select Manage BitLocker, then choose Back up your recovery key next to the drive.

Pick one destination: Save to your Microsoft Account, Save to a USB flash drive, Save to a file, or Print the recovery key.

On a managed work or school computer, follow your organization’s support process before opening the machine.

Install RAM in a desktop tower

Desktop RAM uses full-size DIMM slots, but the cover and slot order come from the exact model manual.

  1. 1.Open the desktop service manual and follow its cover-removal instructions.
  2. 2.Open Memory modules or Installing the memory modules.
  3. 3.Align the notch on the memory module with the tab in the memory-module slot.
  4. 4.Insert the module into the memory-module connector, then press down until it snaps into position and the securing clip locks.
  5. 5.Repeat for each module, reinstall the cover, and follow the manual’s after-service steps.

On Dell XPS 8960-style desktop documentation, matching dual-channel modules go in DIMM 1 and 2. Use the slot order in your own desktop’s service manual.

Install RAM in an upgradeable laptop

Open the model service manual and go to Installing the memory module, which Dell marks as applicable to computers shipped with a SoDIMM configuration. If your model shipped with CAMM memory instead, follow the manual’s separate Compression Attached Memory (CAMM) module procedure.

Remove any prerequisite part named by the manual, such as the sliding door, full base cover, SD card, or SIM card.

Align the notch on the SO-DIMM with the tab on the memory-module slot.

Slide the memory module firmly into the slot at an angle.

Press the module down until it clicks into place.

Repeat the same action for the second module when the laptop has another serviceable slot.

Reinstall the sliding door or full base cover, reinstall the SD card when the manual calls for it, and complete the after-service steps.

Tip: identify the installed memory format before you rule out an upgrade. Dell states that systems such as the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus MB18250 support both CAMM and CSoDIMM and ship with one or the other, and that the two configurations are not customer interchangeable. A machine with no SO-DIMM procedure can still have its own Compression Attached Memory (CAMM) module procedure. Only when the manual says the memory is integrated, or lists no memory-module procedure of any kind for your configuration, is there no supported laptop RAM install to perform.

Remove old RAM when replacing it

Replacement starts with the removal procedure for your exact model. In Dell Precision 3591-style laptop documentation, open Removing and installing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs), then Memory module, then Removing the memory module.

Follow the manual’s before-service instructions and remove required parts, such as the SIM card or base cover.

Spread the securing clips on the memory-module slot until the module pops up.

Slide the memory module out of the slot on the system board.

Repeat the same process when more than one module is installed.

If the module does not release cleanly, stop and return to the model service manual before pulling harder.

Confirm Windows sees the new memory

After the computer starts, check the installed RAM total before judging the upgrade.

  1. 1.Right-click Start and choose Windows Settings.
  2. 2.Select System.
  3. 3.Pick About.
  4. 4.Under Device specifications, check the amount of RAM installed.

On Dell systems, check memory in UEFI/BIOS as well. Turn on the computer, tap F2 several times at the Dell logo, then review System Memory and Memory Speed when those fields appear in system setup.

Run a memory check after installation

Use this after a new RAM install or reseat when Windows needs a stability check.

Save your work and close apps.

Right-click Start, select Run, enter mdsched in Open:, then select OK.

In Windows Memory Diagnostic, select Restart now and check for problems (recommended).

For a longer diagnostic, press F1 while the diagnostic screen is open, change Test Mix: from Standard to Extended with the arrow keys, then press F10 to apply.

Know the Mac limits before opening anything

Current Apple silicon Macs use unified or integrated memory selected at purchase, so do not try to add physical RAM later. Apple says Mac mini 2024, Mac mini 2023, and Mac mini M1 2020 memory is integrated into the Apple M-series chip package and cannot be upgraded.

Apple also lists 24-inch iMac models released in 2021 or later as using integrated Apple M-series memory that cannot be upgraded. Current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models use unified memory as well.

Apple still documents user-installable memory for some Intel Macs. Mac Pro (2019) and Mac Pro (Rack, 2019) have 12 DIMM slots that Apple documents as user-installable, in supported configurations of 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 DIMMs, using either R-DIMMs or LR-DIMMs without mixing the two types. Other removable-RAM instructions cover specific Intel iMac, Mac mini, and older MacBook Pro models. For Mac mini 2018, Apple says to configure memory at purchase or use an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for a later upgrade.

If the Mac upgrade path fails because the model is newer or not listed as user-installable, use the memory configured at purchase or the Apple service option named for that model.

Fix RAM that is not detected

The most common cause is an unseated module, unsupported RAM for the exact model, or the wrong slot order.

Power down and return to the service manual for your desktop or laptop.

Recheck the memory generation, capacity limit, slot count, and required paired-slot layout.

Open the machine again only after following the manual’s before-service steps.

Reseat the module by aligning the notch with the slot tab, pressing it fully into the connector, and confirming that the securing clips lock in place.

Start the computer and check Windows About again, or use Dell UEFI/BIOS by tapping F2 at the Dell logo. In Dell system setup, review System Memory and Memory Speed when those fields are shown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install RAM in any laptop?

No. Some laptops have removable SO-DIMM memory, while others have RAM integrated into the system board. Check the exact model service manual before buying memory.

How do I know what RAM to buy?

Use the computer manufacturer’s support documentation for your exact model. Dell users can identify the PC with a Service Tag or Express Service Code, and Crucial’s Upgrade Selector can show compatible upgrades.

Should I run a test after installing RAM?

Yes. In Windows, open Run, enter mdsched, select OK, then choose Restart now and check for problems (recommended) in Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Can I upgrade RAM in a current Mac?

Current Apple silicon Macs use unified or integrated memory chosen at purchase. Apple lists current Mac mini and 24-inch iMac models as not upgradeable after purchase.
