Tagged photos can make your Instagram profile feel less under your control, especially when an old, awkward, or unwanted post shows up in your tagged grid. Instagram gives you two direct choices: hide the tagged post from your profile, or remove yourself from the post entirely. Use the steps below to clean up what appears on your profile now and control who can tag you next.

Hide one tagged photo from your profile

Open Instagram and go to the post you are tagged in. Tap Options in the top right of the post. Choose Tag Options, then tap Hide From My Profile. If the post still appears in your tagged grid, hide it from the bulk Tags screen below or remove yourself from the post instead.

Clean up several tagged photos at once

Use this when your tagged section has more than one post you want to hide. It changes what appears on your profile, but it does not remove the tags from the original posts.

Go to your Profile or tap your profile picture. Open Menu, then choose Your activity. Open Tags.

Tap Select and choose the posts you want to hide. Tap Hide at the bottom. Tap Hide again to confirm.

Remove your tag when hiding is not enough

This fixes the tag itself, so the post no longer counts as a tagged post for your account. Open the post you want to detach from your profile.

Tap your username on the post. Select Remove Me From Post. The original post remains on Instagram unless the person who posted it deletes it or Instagram removes it.

Remove yourself from many tagged posts

Tap your profile picture at the bottom of Instagram. Open Menu. Go to Your activity. Choose Tags.

Tap Select. Pick the posts you want to untag from your account. Tap Remove at the bottom and confirm the removal. Use Remove instead of Hide when you do not want your username attached to those posts anymore.

Approve future tags before they appear

Manual approval is the cleanest way to stop new tagged posts from landing on your profile automatically. Open your Profile or tap your profile picture, then go to Menu and Tags and mentions.

Tap the Toggle next to Manually approve tags, then tap Turn on. After that, future tagged posts need your approval before they appear on your profile.

Limit who can tag you

Change this setting when you want fewer future tags, or none at all.

  1. 1.Open your Profile or tap your profile picture.
  2. 2.Tap Menu, then open Tags and mentions.
  3. 3.Under Who can tag you, choose Allow tags from everyone, Allow tags from people you follow, or Don't allow tags.

Make your account private for more profile privacy

Use this on a personal Instagram account when you want the photos and videos on your profile, including your tagged grid, limited to approved followers. Your profile photo, name, username, and bio stay visible to anyone on or off Instagram either way. Instagram says business profiles cannot make accounts private.

Open your Profile or tap your profile picture. Open Menu. Choose Account privacy.

Turn on Private account. Tap Switch to private. Making the account private does not remove tags and does not hide the original poster's public post outside your profile.

Remove followers after switching private

Go to your Profile. Open your followers list. Find the follower you no longer want to see your private profile.

Tap X to the right of that follower. Tap Remove to confirm. This is useful after going private because existing followers can still see your profile until you remove them.

Use stronger safety options when someone keeps tagging you

This fixes repeat tagging from one account or during a short harassment spike. To stop one account from tagging or mentioning you going forward, go to that account's profile. Tap Options.

Tap Block, then tap Block at the bottom to confirm. Instagram says blocking someone from the Instagram app blocks their account, other existing accounts they may have, and any new accounts they may create.

For a temporary spike, go to Profile. Open Menu. Below How others can interact with you, tap Limit interactions. Choose groups to limit, such as recent followers or accounts that don't follow you.

Tap When we'll remind you to turn this off and pick the reminder timing. You can limit interactions for up to four weeks at a time and extend it if you need to. Tap Turn on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hiding a tagged photo remove the tag?

No. Hiding removes the post from your profile's tagged section, but the tag remains on the original post.

Can I delete someone else's Instagram post that tags me?

No. You can hide it from your profile or remove yourself from the post, but only the poster can delete their post unless Instagram removes it.

Will making my account private hide old tagged photos from everyone?

No. It limits the photos and videos on your profile, including your tagged grid, to approved followers, while your profile photo, name, username, and bio stay visible to anyone. It does not remove tags or hide the original poster's public post outside your profile.

Can I stop all new tags on Instagram?

Yes. Go to your Profile or profile picture, then Menu, Tags and mentions, and under Who can tag you choose Don't allow tags.
