You want one person to stop seeing something you post on Instagram, but Instagram does not give regular feed posts a Facebook-style per-post audience picker. The right move depends on whether the post is already live, whether your account is private, and whether you are sharing a Feed post, Reel, Story, or Live. Start with the strongest person-specific controls, then use the narrower options when they fit the post.

Block the person for the strongest hide option

Blocking is the most direct person-specific fix for regular Instagram posts and reels.

  1. 1.Open Instagram and go to the person’s profile.
  2. 2.Tap Options or the three-dot menu in the top right.
  3. 3.Tap Block.
  4. 4.Choose whether to block only that account or also new accounts they may create.
  5. 5.Tap Block again to confirm.

Make your account private and remove them

This fixes regular post visibility when you want the account private and do not want to block the person. Business profiles cannot be made private, so if you are on one, switch back to a personal account first.

Open your profile or profile picture, tap Menu, then choose Settings and activity. Under Who can see your content, tap Account privacy. Turn on Private account. Tap Switch to private.

Return to your profile and open Followers. Tap Remove to the right of the person’s name. Tap Remove again to confirm.

Use Close Friends for a new post or Reel

Close Friends applies before you share new content. It is not a hide switch for a regular post that is already public, but it lets you publish a new feed post or Reel to a smaller audience that leaves that person out.

Open your profile, tap Menu, then choose Close Friends. Select or add the people who should be able to see the content. Leave the person off the list, then tap Done.

For a new feed post, tap the Create or plus button and choose Post. Select your media and continue through editing. On the sharing screen, tap Audience. Choose Close Friends, tap Done, then tap Share.

For a new Reel, tap the Create or plus button and choose Reel. Create or select your media. When you are ready to share, tap Audience. Select Close friends, tap Back or Done, then tap Share.

Hide Stories and Live from one person

Open your profile or profile picture, tap Menu, and go to Settings and activity. Under Who can see your content, tap Story, live and location. Tap Hide story and live from. Select the people you want to hide your Story and Live from.

Tap Back or Done to save the choice. Use this for Stories and Live only, because it does not hide regular profile posts or reels.

Archive an existing post for everyone

Archive helps when the post is already live and you want it off your profile without deleting it.

  1. 1.Go to your profile or profile picture.
  2. 2.Tap the post you want to archive.
  3. 3.Tap Options in the top right.
  4. 4.Tap Archive.

Delete a post when you want it gone

Open the post from your profile if you only need to remove one item. Tap Options. Tap Delete. Tap Delete again to confirm.

For multiple posts, open your profile, tap Menu, then choose Your activity. Under Content you shared, tap Posts. Tap Select. Choose the posts you want to remove.

Tap Delete at the bottom. Confirm with Delete. Use Delete only when Archive is not enough, because archiving keeps the post recoverable for you while deletion is the more destructive option.

Know what Instagram does not offer for regular posts

Instagram does not provide a current per-person audience picker for an already published regular feed post like Friends except. For an existing feed post, use Block, make the account private and use Remove in Followers, use Archive for everyone, or use Delete.

Restrict, mute, unfollow, hiding like counts, and comment blocking do not hide your own Instagram posts from one selected person. They affect other parts of Instagram, but they are not post privacy controls.

Older tutorials may show Hide Your Story from someone’s profile menu. Use the current Instagram path instead: Settings and activity, then Story, live and location, then Hide story and live from.

Deactivate your profile only when everything must disappear

This fixes visibility by hiding your whole Instagram profile and posts from everyone, not just one person.

Open your profile, tap Menu, and go to Settings and activity. Open Accounts Center. Go to Personal details or Profiles and personal details. Choose Account ownership and control or Manage.

Tap Deactivation or deletion. Select the Instagram profile. Choose Deactivate account, tap Continue, and follow the prompts.

If deactivation is too broad, go back to Block, Private account plus follower removal, Close Friends, or Archive based on the type of content you need to hide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide one Instagram post from one person without blocking them?

For an already published regular feed post, Instagram does not offer a per-person hide option. Use a private account plus follower removal, Archive, Delete, or Close Friends for new posts.

Does removing someone as a follower hide my posts from them?

Yes, when your account is private. After you turn on Private account and remove them from Followers, they cannot see your private posts unless you approve them again.

Can I hide only my Stories from someone?

Yes. Use Settings and activity, then Story, live and location, then Hide story and live from, and select the person.

Does Close Friends work for Instagram posts and Reels?

Yes. You can share a new feed post or Reel with Close Friends and leave that person off the list. It does not change the audience of an already public regular post.
