You tap WhatsApp, but it closes immediately, freezes, or never gets past the loading screen. Start with closing and updating the app, then move to the fixes for your device. A loading screen, a missing installation, and an account restriction each need a different approach.

Check what happens when you tap WhatsApp

If WhatsApp immediately closes or freezes, start by closing it completely and reopening it. If it stays open but keeps connecting, jump to the network checks below.

A cloud symbol on the iPhone or iPad icon means WhatsApp was offloaded. Tap WhatsApp to reinstall it, provided it remains available in the App Store. On Android, tap a faded, archived WhatsApp icon to restore the installation.

A lock challenge requires your configured biometric authentication or app-lock password. For an account-ban message, tap Request review and check the result in WhatsApp. WhatsApp says a ban without that option is final and cannot be appealed through this process.

Close WhatsApp completely and restart your device

Follow the closing instructions for your phone or tablet, reopen WhatsApp, then restart the device if it still fails.

  1. 1.On Android, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > WhatsApp > Force stop > OK. These are Pixel labels; other manufacturers use different wording.
  2. 2.On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause. On a Home-button model, double-click Home. Find WhatsApp and swipe its preview upward.
  3. 3.On iPad, swipe up from the bottom, hold, then release to open Exposé. Swipe the WhatsApp preview upward. For a windowed app, use Window Controls > Close Window.
  4. 4.To restart Pixel 6 and later, including Fold, hold Power and Volume Up, then tap Restart. On Pixel 5a and earlier, hold Power for approximately 30 seconds or until it restarts. On a current Samsung Galaxy, swipe down from the top-right corner and tap the Power icon > Restart > Restart.
  5. 5.To restart an iPhone with Face ID, hold either volume button and the side button to display the power-off slider; Home-button models use the side button alone, except the first-generation SE, which uses the top button. Drag the slider and wait 30 seconds. Hold the side button, or the top button on the first-generation SE, to turn it on.
  6. 6.To restart an iPad without Home, hold the top button and either volume button; on a model with Home, hold the top button alone. Drag the power-off slider and wait 30 seconds. Hold the top button to turn it on.

Bring WhatsApp and your system up to date

Updating addresses an outdated app or operating system. On Android, open Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices. Under Updates available, update WhatsApp.

On iPhone or iPad, open App Store > profile icon > App Updates. Install the available WhatsApp update.

For a Pixel system update, open Settings > System > Software update. Other Android manufacturers use different paths. Follow the available update instructions.

Before updating iOS or iPadOS, back up your device. Then connect the iPhone or iPad to power and connect it to Wi-Fi. Open Settings > General > Software Update. Select Download and Install when offered.

Check your device against WhatsApp’s download requirements: Android 6.0 or later, iOS 15.1 or later, iPadOS 15.1 or later, macOS 12.1 or later, or Windows 10 or later. For the Windows app, WhatsApp’s Help Center is more exact: it supports 64-bit Windows 10 version 1903 and newer Windows versions, so a 32-bit or pre-1903 Windows 10 PC needs a Windows update first. An unsupported device needs a compatible operating-system update or replacement.

Clear the Android cache after repeated crashes

Try this when WhatsApp still freezes or closes after a restart and updates. Clearing app storage erases local app data, so choose Clear cache at this stage.

On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > WhatsApp > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Open WhatsApp again to test it.

On a Samsung Galaxy, run the device’s optimization tool through Settings > Device care > Optimize now. Retry WhatsApp.

For Galaxy system-component updates, open Settings > About phone or About tablet > Software information > Google Play system update. Install available updates.

If device storage is running short, remove unnecessary large files or unused media outside WhatsApp. You do not need WhatsApp to open to clean up device storage.

Test the connection when WhatsApp stays on loading

Use network checks when WhatsApp stays open but cannot load or connect. Start by opening a webpage or another online app to test the connection.

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If the connection still fails, try another Wi-Fi network or hotspot. On hotel, airport, or campus Wi-Fi, complete the network’s sign-in or accept its terms before retrying WhatsApp.

For an iPhone that fails only on mobile data, open Settings > Cellular. Turn on Cellular Data, then scroll to the app list and enable WhatsApp. With Dual SIM, check the selected cellular-data line.

On Android, open Settings > Network & internet or Connections, depending on the manufacturer. Turn Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then turn Airplane mode off.

If home Wi-Fi remains faulty, unplug the router. Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect its power and allow it to reconnect. Retry WhatsApp.

If WhatsApp still cannot connect on a working network, open WhatsApp’s contact page and select contact us under general WhatsApp questions before resetting or reinstalling the app.

Remove time limits and unlock restricted access

An Android app timer or Focus mode blocks access when it pauses WhatsApp. For an exhausted timer, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers. Labels vary by manufacturer.

Open the WhatsApp timer. Delete the timer, or wait until timers reset at midnight.

For a paused app, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode. Select Turn off now. For temporary access instead, select Take a break. If you chose Take a break, select a duration.

If WhatsApp is installed in Private space on a supported Android 15 or later device, open Settings > Security & privacy > Private space. Authenticate to unlock the space, then launch WhatsApp inside it.

On iOS 18 or later, find a hidden installation through App Library > Hidden. Authenticate to access the hidden apps.

On iOS 27, open Settings > Screen Time > Always Allowed > Add Apps. These controls require compatible version-27 software across participating devices; parent-controlled settings require the parent’s authorization. Add WhatsApp.

For a supervised Android device, have the parent select the child’s profile in Family Link. Open Screen time > Time limits > App limits > WhatsApp. Change Blocked to Allowed, then tap Done.

If a work device reports that an administrator disabled WhatsApp, ask the administrator to restore access.

Get the desktop app or browser responding again

On Windows 11, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select WhatsApp under Processes, and choose End task. On Mac, try Command-Q; if WhatsApp is unresponsive, press Option-Command-Esc, select WhatsApp, and click Force Quit. Reopen WhatsApp.

Update Windows WhatsApp through Microsoft Store > Check for Updates. For a Mac App Store installation, use App Store > Updates; otherwise, get the current version from WhatsApp’s download page.

On Windows 11 installations with repair controls, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > WhatsApp’s More menu > Advanced options > Repair. If these controls are absent, continue to the reinstall precautions below.

For WhatsApp Web, use your browser’s Reload control at web.whatsapp.com. Use an up-to-date Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Safari. In Chrome, test the site through More > New Incognito window to check for browser-state or extension problems.

Protect your chats before resetting or reinstalling

Clearing app storage erases local app data, and uninstalling WhatsApp puts local chats at risk. Confirm that your chats are recoverable before proceeding. If the app will not open to make a fresh backup, linked Web, Mac, and Windows devices cannot create or restore one for you.

For a Pixel app-data reset, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > WhatsApp > Storage & cache > Clear storage or Clear data > OK. On Galaxy, use Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear data > Delete.

To reinstall on iPhone or iPad after confirming your backup, touch and hold WhatsApp. Select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Download WhatsApp again through the App Store or WhatsApp’s download page.

On Windows 11, use Reset in WhatsApp’s Advanced options after Repair fails. Reset returns the app to its default state and clears what it stored on the PC, so keep your primary phone to hand: WhatsApp needs it to link the desktop app to your account again.

For a Mac reinstall, quit WhatsApp first. Treat reinstalling as a risk to local app data. Open Finder > Applications, then select WhatsApp.

Choose File > Move to Trash. Removing its Dock icon alone does not uninstall the app. Redownload the Mac app from WhatsApp’s download page.

If these steps fail, or you cannot establish chat recoverability, open WhatsApp’s contact page and select contact us under general WhatsApp questions. Include your device, operating system, WhatsApp version if known, and whether the app crashes, freezes, or shows an error.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use WhatsApp Web while the phone app will not open?

Try an already linked companion device. Linking a new device requires the primary WhatsApp app to work so you can authenticate and scan the QR code.

Does WhatsApp support rooted Android phones?

No. WhatsApp does not support rooted phones or custom ROMs. Ask the phone manufacturer for instructions to remove root and restore its stock operating system. Protect your data before restoration because the process carries a risk of data loss.

Will Samsung Safe mode let me open WhatsApp?

No. Downloaded WhatsApp is disabled in Safe mode. Use Safe mode to diagnose broader device instability.

Does deleting WhatsApp also delete my account?

Deleting the app and deleting your WhatsApp account are separate actions. Account deletion is irreversible and should not be used to troubleshoot an app that will not open.
