Steam Guard camera problems usually come from a blocked camera permission, Android or iPhone privacy controls, or an outdated Steam Mobile app. When the QR scanner will not open, stays black, or never detects the code, start with the fixes that restore camera access first. You can still sign in without scanning while you sort out the camera.
Open the Steam Guard scanner
The most common cause is opening the wrong camera surface instead of Steam Mobile's built-in Steam Guard QR scanner.
Open Steam Mobile and tap the Steam Guard menu, shown as the middle shield icon in the bottom navigation bar.
Tap Scan a QR code, then point your phone at the Steam sign-in QR code.
Steam Mobile supports iOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later. If your phone is below that, install Steam Mobile on a supported device before trying the scanner again.
Allow camera access on iPhone
On iPhone, Steam needs permission to use the camera before the QR scanner can work. Open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then tap Camera.
Find Steam and turn it on. Go back to Steam Mobile, open the Steam Guard shield tab, and tap Scan a QR code again.
If Steam does not appear under Camera, update or reinstall Steam Mobile, then open the scanner again so iOS can request access.
Restore camera permission on Android
This fixes a QR scanner that opens to a blank view, closes immediately, or never asks for camera permission.
Open Settings on your Android phone.
Go to Apps and tap Steam.
Tap Permissions, then tap Camera.
Choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time.
Open Steam Mobile again and use the Steam Guard shield tab to scan the QR code.
Turn Android camera access back on
Android can block camera access system-wide, which stops Steam even when the app permission looks right.
- 1.Open Settings.
- 2.Go to Security & privacy, then Privacy.
- 3.Tap Privacy controls.
- 4.Turn on Camera access.
- 5.Return to Steam Mobile and tap Scan a QR code.
Update Steam Mobile before deeper fixes
An old Steam Mobile build can cause sign-in and scanner behavior to fall behind the current app. On iPhone, open App Store, tap the My Account button or your photo, tap App Updates, then tap Update next to Steam.
On Android, open Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, open Updates available, then tap See details. Tap Update next to Steam.
Android users without Google Play can install Steam Mobile from Valve's official Steam Mobile page, which includes an Android download option.
Clear cache or reinstall the app
If permissions are correct and the scanner still fails, refresh the app installation. Clear the cache first, because uninstalling is the riskier step: Valve runs a dedicated I deleted or lost my Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator recovery flow for people who lose the authenticator along with the app. Before you uninstall, make sure you have your Steam Guard recovery code and access to the phone number on the account. Valve says that if you no longer have your phone and do not have your recovery code, you need Steam Support to remove the authenticator, so start there rather than uninstalling.
- 1.On Android, open Settings, then Apps or Applications.
- 2.Tap Steam, then Storage, then Clear cache.
- 3.If that does not help, uninstall Steam from Settings, then reinstall it from Google Play or Valve's official Steam Mobile page.
- 4.On iPhone, touch and hold Steam, tap Remove App, then tap Delete App.
- 5.Reinstall Steam Mobile from the App Store or Valve's official Steam Mobile page.
Sign in without scanning the QR code
This applies when the camera still is not working but you still have access to Steam Mobile. Steam Guard can approve a login without the QR scanner.
On the Steam desktop or web sign-in page, enter your account name and password instead of scanning the QR code.
When the login request appears in Steam Mobile, approve it.
You can also open Steam Mobile, go to the Steam Guard shield tab, and use the current Steam Guard code on the desktop or web sign-in prompt.
Steam Guard codes refresh every 30 seconds, so use the active code shown in the app.
Check Screen Time or device restrictions
On iPhone, Screen Time can block either Steam or the camera. Open Settings, go to Screen Time, then check App Limits and remove or relax any limit affecting Steam.
For a child's device, go to Settings, Screen Time, the child's name, Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps & Features, and turn Camera on. During Downtime, use Always Allowed to allow Steam.
On a school or work device, camera access may be controlled by device management. Contact the device administrator because managed restrictions can stop third-party apps from using the camera.
Recover Steam Guard after changing phones
Install Steam Mobile on the phone you use now.
Sign in to your Steam account in the app.
Select Move Authenticator.
Enter the confirmation code Steam sends to your phone.
If you can still open Steam Mobile but need a last-resort access fix, go to the Steam Guard page, select Remove Authenticator, and confirm the removal. Valve documents two paths here: its step-by-step removal walkthrough shows that direct path, while its Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator FAQ describes tapping the gear icon on the Steam Guard page first. If you do not see Remove Authenticator on the Steam Guard page in your build of the app, open the gear icon and select it there.
Removing the authenticator reduces your account security, and Valve states that after removal you cannot trade or sell items on the Community Market for 15 days. Use Move Authenticator to transfer it instead whenever you still can.
If none of the app-based options restore access, use Steam Support and choose Help, I can't sign in, the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator trouble page, I deleted or lost my Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, or My issue isn't listed.
Keep your Steam Guard recovery details current before changing phones, because moving the authenticator is much easier while you still control the old setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Steam Guard QR scanner showing a black screen?
A black scanner usually means Steam cannot access the camera or Android's system-wide camera access is off. Enable camera permission for Steam, then reopen the Steam Guard scanner.
Can I log in to Steam without scanning the QR code?
Yes. Enter your account name and password on the Steam sign-in page, then approve the login request in Steam Mobile, or use the current Steam Guard code from the shield tab.
Can the iPhone Camera app open Steam Guard scanning?
Yes. On iPhone, open the Camera app, point it at the Steam sign-in QR code, then tap the Steam or QR notification to open Steam Mobile's Steam Guard scan page.
What should I do if Steam disappeared from iPhone Camera settings?
Update or reinstall Steam Mobile, then open the Steam Guard QR scanner again. The camera permission prompt returns when the app requests camera access.
What if Android removed Steam's camera permission after I stopped using it?
Open Settings, go to Apps, then Steam, and turn off Pause app activity if unused under Unused app settings. Then give Steam camera permission again.
Does reinstalling Steam Mobile remove Steam Guard?
Reinstalling is a normal troubleshooting step, but do it with care: Valve runs a dedicated "I deleted or lost my Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator" recovery flow, so confirm you have your recovery code and access to the account's phone number before you uninstall. If the authenticator is tied to another phone or the device changed, use Move Authenticator, and contact Steam Support if you no longer have the phone or the recovery code.
