Chromebook split screen problems leave you with windows that refuse to snap, missing window suggestions, or an enlarged panel across the top of your display. The fix depends on whether you’re using separate windows, Chrome’s tab split view, or screen magnification. Start with the quick snapping controls below, then follow the fix that matches your screen.

Get two windows side by side again

Select the window you want on the left.

Press Alt + [ to snap it into place.

Select the other window.

Press Alt + ] to place it on the right. These shortcuts do not open window-pairing suggestions.

For a mouse-based method, drag a window’s title bar to the left or right screen edge, releasing when that side highlights.

Select the second window from the suggestions to complete the pair.

If a full-screen app hides the window controls, press the Full screen key, documented as F4, before snapping it.

Tip: To return a snapped window to full size, press Alt + = while that window is selected.

Remove the enlarged panel at the top

That enlarged strip above your normal desktop is the Docked magnifier.

  1. 1.Select the time.
  2. 2.Open Settings > Accessibility.
  3. 3.Select Display and magnification.
  4. 4.Turn off Docked magnifier.
  5. 5.For a keyboard alternative to those settings, press Ctrl + Search + D or Ctrl + Launcher + D to toggle the docked magnifier off.
  6. 6.If the entire screen is magnified instead, press Ctrl + Search + M or Ctrl + Launcher + M to turn off full-screen magnification.

Choose the right method for two Chrome tabs

Two tabs inside one Chrome window still give ChromeOS only one window to snap.

Drag one tab outside its Chrome window to create a separate window.

Press Alt + [ with the first window selected.

Press Alt + ] with the second window selected.

Want both pages inside a single Chrome window? Right-click an inactive tab and select New split view with current tab.

Alternatively, right-click the active tab and select Add tab to new split view.

For the keyboard method, press Ctrl + Alt + N.

To keep the split-view toolbar button available, right-click Split view to the left of the address bar while split view is open.

Select Pin.

For panes in the wrong order, choose Reverse position from the Split view menu.

To return to separate tabs, choose Separate split view from that menu.

If dragging tabs does not create split view, open More > Settings > Appearance.

Enable Allow split view drag-and-drop on left, right, or bottom edge of window. This setting controls tab dragging, not ChromeOS window snapping.

Bring back missing window suggestions

How you snap the first window matters. The Alt + [ and Alt + ] shortcuts do not open pairing suggestions.

Hover over Maximise or Restore.

Select Split or Partial.

Choose a side. Dragging the title bar to a screen edge also starts pairing.

Both windows must be on the same desk and display. To move a window between desks, right-click its title bar.

Select Move window to desk.

Choose the desk containing your other window.

For an external monitor, press Search + Alt + M or Launcher + Alt + M with the window selected to move it between displays.

To enable suggestions, open the time > Settings and search for Split screen.

Under Window and desks, turn on Show window suggestions when starting split screen.

A fully visible window already snapped on the opposite side prevents the suggestion list. If suggestions still do not appear, place the second window manually with Alt + [ or Alt + ].

Adjust display size and orientation

When windows have too little usable space, press Ctrl + Shift + 0 to reset resolution. To make desktop items smaller, press Ctrl + Shift + minus. This adjusts the available space; it does not guarantee a snapping repair.

For scaling controls, open the time > Settings > Device > Displays. Select Built-in Display or your monitor’s name. Choose an option under Display and text size.

If windows snap above and below each other, choose the orientation you need under Orientation on the same display settings page. In vertical layouts, Alt + [ and Alt + ] mean top and bottom.

To resize a paired Snap Group, drag the divider between its windows. For an individual snapped window, drag its edge when the resize-arrow cursor appears.

Work around touch and Android app problems

In tablet mode, swipe up from the bottom and hold to open Overview.

Hold and drag a window to one side of the screen.

Tap the other window to fill the remaining side.

Drag the center divider to resize the pair.

To exit split screen, drag the divider to either outer edge.

For navigation buttons instead of gestures, open the time > Settings > Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad.

Enable Show navigation buttons.

Select Show windows.

Drag a window sideways to start splitting the screen.

Android app resizing depends on the app. For a newly downloaded app that has a top Down arrow, open that menu.

Choose Resizable. This control does not make every Android app compatible with split screen.

If only that app has trouble, open Play Store > your profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available > See details.

Select Update for the affected app.

If touch dragging still fails, wipe dust or dirt from the screen and try again. If it remains unresponsive, connect a mouse to return to laptop mode and use the window-snapping controls.

Restore snapping shortcuts

A customized snapping shortcut changes the key combination assigned to that action.

Open Shortcuts > Windows and desks.

Hover over the affected action.

Select Edit.

Select Restore defaults, which appears for an action with a custom shortcut.

Select Done.

To inspect keyboard functions, open the time > Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs.

Select View keyboard shortcuts to review the combinations. On external keyboards, Windows or Command substitutes for Search or Launcher.

If the keys themselves are unresponsive, search Settings for diagnostics.

Open Diagnostics > Input > The internal keyboard > Test.

Follow the prompts to test the keyboard.

Restart and update a frozen Chromebook

Close unused apps, windows, or tabs when split screen freezes or tabs repeatedly reload.

Open the time > Power > Restart.

Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi before checking for system updates.

Open the time > Settings > About ChromeOS.

Select Check for updates.

Apply a downloaded update by selecting Restart in Update available. Chromebook browser updates come through ChromeOS.

If newer features remain unavailable, check Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule for the device’s final update date. Snap Groups require ChromeOS M128 or later.

Tip: If only a webpage freezes while the windows still move normally, press Ctrl + Shift + R with that page selected.

Check extensions and get help for persistent problems

To check a third-party window or tab manager for interference, open Chrome’s More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off one suspected extension. Test again, repeating individually for other suspected extensions.

Chrome 139 and later cannot run older Manifest V2 split-screen extensions, and no supported re-enable procedure exists. Use a Manifest V3 version or the built-in window and tab splitting controls.

On a school or work Chromebook, contact IT when display changes are blocked, settings revert after restarting, or updates are restricted. You cannot override enforced settings. Contact IT before a factory reset, too.

To report a persistent window-management problem after these fixes, reproduce it and press Alt + Shift + I. Fill in Tell us what's happening, select Continue, add relevant details, and choose Send. Feedback reports the problem; it does not repair it immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do both split-screen windows come back when I select one?

They are in a Snap Group. Selecting either grouped window brings both back. Minimizing, closing, making full screen, or dragging out either window breaks the group.

Can I skip the suggested second window?

Yes. Select the empty area or Skip, then press Esc. You can place another window manually afterward.

Can I keep an app visible without using split screen?

Use a floating window. Hover over Maximise and select Float, then reposition and resize the window.

Should I Powerwash my Chromebook for missing split-screen suggestions?

No. Powerwash is a last resort for persistent profile or settings problems, not a routine fix for missing suggestions. It erases local files, apps, and settings, so back up local files before using it.
