Snapchat sound not working when recording usually comes down to a muted Snap, silent mode, low media volume, blocked microphone access, or an iPhone Mic Mode setting. Start with the controls that affect the Snap you just recorded, then move into phone permissions and app repair steps. By the end, you will know whether Snapchat, your phone settings, or the device microphone is causing the silent video.

Check the speaker icon on the Snap preview

After recording a video Snap, stay on the preview screen before you send or save it. Look for the speaker icon and tap it once to switch Snap audio mute off or on.

Leave the speaker icon unmuted, then play the preview again. Press and hold the speaker icon only when you want Snapchat voice filters.

If the preview still plays silently after the speaker icon is unmuted, try silent mode and media volume next.

Turn off silent mode and raise volume

Snapchat’s no-sound fix starts with silent mode. On an iPhone with a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch so orange is not showing; on iPhone Action-button models assigned to Silent mode, press the Action button to turn silent mode off.

Keep Snapchat open and press the hardware volume up button. On iPhone, open Control Center and drag the volume slider up.

On Android, press a volume button, tap Menu, and raise Media volume. Test Snapchat again after media volume is up.

Allow Snapchat to use the microphone

Give Snapchat microphone access in system settings, then record a fresh Snap.

  1. 1.On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on Snapchat.
  2. 2.On Android, open Settings > Apps > Snapchat; tap See all apps first when Snapchat is not shown.
  3. 3.Tap Permissions > Microphone.
  4. 4.Choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time when either option is shown; on devices that offer only the basic choice, tap Allow.
  5. 5.Record a new video Snap and check the preview audio.

Restore Android microphone access

This method applies when Snapchat already has microphone permission but Android is blocking microphone access system-wide. It is for Android 12 and newer privacy controls.

Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls.

Turn Microphone access on.

For the quicker route, swipe down twice from the top of the screen and tap the microphone tile in Quick Settings when access is blocked.

Record a new video Snap and check the preview.

Review Snapchat Permissions in the app

Snapchat includes an in-app permissions screen that shows what the app uses. Open Snapchat, tap the Profile icon at the top of the Camera screen, then tap the gear button.

Scroll to App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data. On iOS, tap Permissions under App & Privacy; on Android, scroll to Privacy Choices and tap Permissions. Microphone should appear for recording audio for Snaps, video chat, and more.

This screen reviews permissions; iOS and Android still control the actual allow switch. When Snapchat asks for access, approve it in the system prompt or return to the microphone permission steps above.

Change iPhone Mic Mode on iOS 26

Use this when Snap audio sounds muffled, distorted, underwater, or almost missing on an iPhone running iOS 26. Snapchat points to Voice Isolation as the setting to change while Snapchat is actively recording.

Start recording a video in Snapchat.

Open Control Center, tap Snapchat Controls, then look under Audio and Video.

If Microphone is set to Voice Isolation, change it to Standard, then change it to Automatic.

When multiple audio devices are connected, open Control Center, tap Snapchat Controls, and select the device you want beside Audio Input. On iOS 26.1 and later, supported wired microphones also show an input gain slider under Audio Input.

If audio still sounds wrong after Mic Mode and audio input are corrected, restart Snapchat and clear its cache.

Clear cache and restart Snapchat

Use this when permissions look correct but Snapchat still records silently or the recording screen behaves badly. Snapchat says clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

On iPhone, open Snapchat and go to My Account > gear > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data. Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache, then tap Clear.

On Android, go to My Account > gear > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data. Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data > Clear Cache > Clear.

Fully close Snapchat, then open it again. On Android gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, hold, let go, then swipe up on Snapchat in the app switcher.

Restart the phone next. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears; on most Android phones, press the power button for about 30 seconds or tap Restart when it appears.

Update, reinstall, or test the microphone

The most common cause at this stage is that the app is current enough to open but still misbehaving during recording.

On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll to pending updates, and tap Update next to Snapchat.

On Android, open Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, go to Manage apps & device, tap See details under Updates available, then tap Update next to Snapchat.

On Fire OS, open the Amazon Appstore, search for Snapchat, then tap Install or Update.

If the iPhone app still behaves badly, delete and reinstall Snapchat. Touch and hold Snapchat, tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete, then reinstall it from the App Store; deleting an app does not cancel subscriptions.

Test the device microphone outside Snapchat before treating the app as the problem again. Record sound with the phone’s native camera or voice recording app; on iPhone, open Camera, record a video while speaking at the top of the iPhone, switch cameras, record again, then play both videos and confirm your voice is clear.

When a recorded Snap is already silent or unusable, use Snapchat’s Voiceover tool to add new audio. From the preview, tap the Timeline Editor icon, tap Sounds > Voiceover, tap the record button to start and stop, then save. Availability can vary by device and account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clearing Snapchat cache delete my Memories?

No. Snapchat says clearing cache will not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

Should I disconnect Bluetooth headphones for mobile Snap recording sound?

Use Bluetooth disconnection for Snapchat for Web audio troubleshooting, where Snapchat lists it. For mobile video Snap recording, start with mute, silent mode, volume, microphone permission, Mic Mode, cache, update, and reinstall steps.

What if Snapchat's microphone switch is missing or locked?

A parent, guardian, or device administrator may be controlling microphone permission, though supervision is not the only explanation. On a supervised iPhone or iPad, Screen Time restrictions under Content & Privacy Restrictions > Privacy > Microphone can prevent apps from requesting microphone access until the supervising account changes the setting. On Family Link Android and Chromebook devices, both parents and the child can manage app permissions by default, so the switch is locked only when a parent has set permissions to Only parents.

What if other apps cannot record my voice either?

Treat it as a device microphone issue. Test recording in the native camera or voice recording app, and on iPhone use Apple’s camera test by recording with both cameras and checking that your voice plays clearly.
