Your Mazda CX-5 Bluetooth connection breaks when Mazda Connect and your phone stop agreeing on the same saved pairing, source, or connection mode. Start with the quick checks that get the car and phone talking again, then rebuild the pairing if the connection still fails. These fixes cover failed pairing, silent Bluetooth audio, hands-free call problems, and phones that connect to the wrong source.

Let Mazda Connect finish starting up

The most common cause is trying to reconnect before Mazda Connect has finished starting Bluetooth after the vehicle powers on. Switch the ignition or power switch to ACC or ON. Then wait one or two minutes before changing any Bluetooth settings.

Open your phone and turn Bluetooth on. On iPhone, go to Settings and Bluetooth. On Android, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Bluetooth.

If the phone does not reconnect automatically, reconnect it from Mazda Connect. From the Mazda Connect home screen, open Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings.

Those labels apply to CX-5 model years running the earlier Mazda Connect interface. On the 2026 CX-5 and other CX-5 systems with the newer Mazda Connect screen, open Settings, then Bluetooth® & Phone Connectivity, turn the Bluetooth toggle on, and use Pair New Device. Wherever the steps below say Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings, use Bluetooth® & Phone Connectivity on that newer interface.

Turn Bluetooth on in the car and phone

This fixes cases where the CX-5 and phone cannot see each other at all. On the Mazda Connect home screen, open Settings. Select Connectivity Settings.

Open Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings. Select Bluetooth®. Turn Bluetooth on.

On your phone, turn Bluetooth on. Turn airplane mode off. Keep the phone visible or connectable while you pair it with the car.

Pair the phone again from Mazda Connect

Use this when the phone is not registered in the CX-5 yet, or when the old pairing no longer connects cleanly. The registration limit depends on which system your CX-5 has: the current Mazda Connect owner’s manual states you can register up to five Bluetooth devices, while the 2018 CX-5 manual allows a maximum of seven paired devices including Bluetooth audio devices and hands-free phones. Check the manual for your model year if you are near the limit.

From the Mazda Connect home screen, open Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings. Choose Pair New Device. Select Continue on the Bluetooth search screen. Select your phone name from the list.

On the phone, confirm the displayed passcode or enter the passcode shown by Mazda Connect. Wait for the Device Connected screen before testing calls or audio.

If your phone does not appear in the Mazda list, choose Pair From Device in Mazda Connect. On the phone Bluetooth screen, select Mazda. Confirm or enter the passcode. Wait for Device Connected.

Choose the right connection type

A phone can be paired but still act broken when Mazda Connect is using it only for calls, only for audio, or as a smartphone projection source.

Open Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings. Select the registered phone name and choose Phone and Audio when you want both calls and music.

Choose Phone for hands-free calling only. Choose Audio for music only. Some Bluetooth devices do not separate hands-free and audio, so Mazda Connect connects them as Phone and Audio.

If this does not fix it, disconnect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto next because those modes change normal Bluetooth behavior.

Disconnect CarPlay or Android Auto first

Bluetooth needs smartphone projection out of the way before you pair or switch devices.

  1. 1.If wired Apple CarPlay is connected, unplug the Apple-genuine connector cord from the USB port and iPhone.
  2. 2.If wireless Apple CarPlay is connected, open the Mazda Connect Applications screen, choose Apple CarPlay, select the connected iPhone, and disable Apple CarPlay.
  3. 3.On iPhone, open Settings, then Bluetooth, select Mazda under MY DEVICES, and turn Apple CarPlay off.
  4. 4.For Android Auto, end Android Auto before pairing or changing the Bluetooth device in Mazda Connect.
  5. 5.After projection is disconnected, return to Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings to pair or change the phone.

Forget Mazda on both sides

When the old pairing is corrupt, remove it from Mazda Connect and from the phone, then pair again from scratch. In Mazda Connect, open Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings, then Delete Paired Device. Select your phone name and choose Delete.

Deleting the device from Mazda Connect removes the phonebook, call history, and SMS stored for that Bluetooth device in the car. After that, open Pair New Device and complete the passcode confirmation again.

On iPhone, open Settings, then Bluetooth, tap the Info button next to Mazda, then choose Forget This Device and Forget Device. On Android, touch and hold Bluetooth, open the settings control next to Mazda, then choose Forget or Unpair.

If several old phones are saved in the CX-5, delete the unused devices too. A long paired-device list slows automatic connection, and the registration limit is low either way: five devices on the current Mazda Connect manual and seven on the 2018 CX-5.

Restart Bluetooth and Mazda Connect

This fixes temporary Bluetooth glitches after the phone or infotainment system stops responding normally. Restart your phone. On iPhone, open Settings, then Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off.

Wait about five seconds. Turn Bluetooth back on. On Android, turn Bluetooth off and on again. Restart the Android device.

Stop safely. Switch the vehicle power off. Turn the vehicle back to ACC or ON.

On current Mazda Connect systems with a volume knob, press and hold the volume knob to turn Mazda Connect power and the screen off. Press and hold the volume knob again, or press it again on Type B systems, to turn Mazda Connect power back on.

Reduce disconnects and wrong phone connections

Move the phone out of bags. Move it away from rear-seat areas, rear pockets, the glove compartment, and spaces under or behind seats. Keep it away from metal objects and body contact while you test the connection. Turn off phone power-saving mode if it is limiting Bluetooth.

If the CX-5 connects to someone else’s phone first, open Settings, then Connectivity Settings, then Bluetooth® Settings or Bluetooth®/Phone Connectivity Settings. Select your device name from the Bluetooth device list. Choose the connection method you want.

For audio only, press the talk or pick-up button and say Go to Bluetooth Audio or Play Bluetooth Audio after the beep. Keep only the phones you actually use saved in Mazda Connect.

Update Mazda Connect or reset it as a last resort

Before resetting anything, check your phone against Mazda’s Mazda Connect device compatibility checker, which lists calling, messaging, Bluetooth audio, and projection support by phone model. Note that its stated target vehicles are the CX-30, CX-50, CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, CX-90, Mazda3, MX-5, and MX-30, so treat it as a phone-side guide rather than a CX-5 ruling.

For a CX-5 answer, use the Mazda Connect owner’s manual for your model year on mazdausa.com or ask an Authorized Mazda Dealer. Use Gracenote only for the music database.

Update your phone first. On iPhone, open Settings, then General, then Software Update. On Android, use the phone manufacturer’s system update path, commonly Settings, then System, then Software update or System update.

Check Mazda Connect next from Settings, then System Settings, then Software Update, then Check for Software Updates. You can also enable Automatically Check for Updates, and Mazda says software updates can be performed at an Authorized Mazda Dealer on applicable vehicles.

Use Restore All Factory Settings only after the simpler fixes fail because it removes personal information and restores settings to factory defaults. After the reset, pair the phone again. If pairing still fails after deleting the pairing from both the car and phone, cycling power, and pairing again, contact an Authorized Mazda Dealer or Mazda Bluetooth Hands-Free Customer Service at 800-430-0153 in the U.S.
