Your Ethernet wall port looks ready, but your computer gets no connection. The problem is almost always one of three things: the room jack is not patched into active network gear, the cable run is wired badly, or the device/router settings are blocking the connection.
Start at the central panel, then work outward to the cable, router, computer, and wall wiring. That order saves you from changing Windows or Mac settings when the jack itself is not live yet.
1. Activate the wall jack at the panel
Most in-wall Ethernet ports are not live until someone patches them into a router or switch. The wall plate in the room is only one end of the run.
Find the structured media panel, patch panel, or central low-voltage enclosure.
Next, identify the cable or module port that matches the room jack.
Connect that patch-panel port to a router LAN or Ethernet port with a category-rated patch cord.
If the router has too few LAN ports, connect one router LAN port to a powered Ethernet switch.
After that, connect each room’s patch-panel jack to another switch port.
Confirm the switch Power light is on and the active ports show link or activity.
Do not connect room jacks only to a passive telephone module when you need Ethernet data.
2. Reseat the cables and use the LAN port
A loose RJ45 plug breaks the link before any software setting matters.
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and wall jack, then push it back in until it clicks at both ends.
At the panel, reseat the short patch cord between the matching port and the router or switch.
On the router, use a LAN or Ethernet port for room devices.
Keep the router Internet or WAN port for the modem or incoming service.
Now swap cables. Replace the patch cable between the computer and wall jack, then replace the short patch cord at the patch panel.
If the connection works after the swap, discard the bad cable.
3. Read the router and switch lights
Port LEDs tell you whether the hardware sees a live device.
Off on current NETGEAR gear means no device is connected to that port.
Solid means a powered-on device is connected.
Blinking means traffic is moving.
White or Green indicates Gigabit speed on current NETGEAR gear.
Amber indicates 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps on current NETGEAR gear.
Other router and switch brands use their own labels.
If the port stays dark after reseating and swapping patch cables, focus on the patch-panel connection, the room cable run, the router/switch port, or the device’s Ethernet adapter.
4. Restart the modem, router, and switch
Unplug the modem power.
Remove the modem backup battery if the lights stay on.
Wait at least 30 seconds.
Reconnect the modem and wait for the lights to stabilize.
Then reconnect the router.
Reconnect or power on the switch if you use one.
Test the wall jack again.
On NETGEAR routers, press the hardware Power On/Off button, wait 30 seconds, then press Power On/Off again.
If the router has no power button, unplug it, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
5. Test the router port before blaming the wall
If one room jack fails while other jacks work, separate a bad router LAN port from a bad wall run. NETGEAR’s loopback test does exactly that.
Connect router power and wait for the Power LED to turn solid green or white.
Connect one Ethernet cable from the router LAN port you are testing to the router Internet or WAN port.
Check the LEDs.
If both the LAN LED and Internet LED light, the ports should work.
Repeat the test for each LAN port.
When the router port passes and the room jack still has no link, test the in-wall cable run.
6. Test and re-terminate the in-wall cable
A cable tester finds faults that reboots and settings never touch.
Plug the remote tester into the room wall jack.
Plug the handheld tester into the matching patch-panel or module port.
Run a Wire Map test.
Fix opens, shorts, split pairs, crossed pairs, or mislabeled runs.
Retest the run after the repair.
For a loose or miswired keystone, open the wall plate and verify the same wiring pattern throughout the run: T568A or T568B.
Follow the connector color code, keep the pair twist close to the termination, use a 110 punchdown or termination tool, trim excess wire, reinstall the keystone, and test again.
Use a low-voltage pro when building rules, landlord rules, or local code restrict the work, or when you are not comfortable re-terminating the jack.
7. Fix Ethernet settings on Windows or Mac
After the wall jack shows a link light, check the computer’s Ethernet configuration.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet. The Ethernet status at the top should show Connected.
If it shows Action needed or another error, select Ethernet and review the connection settings.
For DHCP on Windows 11, go to Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet, select the Ethernet network, choose Edit next to IP assignment, select Automatic (DHCP), then save.

If Windows still fails, right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter, then choose Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
To reinstall it, choose Uninstall device > Uninstall, then go to Start > Power > Restart.
As a last resort, use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now > Yes.
On Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Network.
Green means Ethernet is active and connected, yellow means active but not connected, red means not set up, and gray means inactive.
Select the Ethernet service, open Details > TCP/IP, set Configure IPv4 to the recommended configuration, commonly Using DHCP, then click Renew DHCP Lease > OK.
If Ethernet is inactive on Mac, control-click the Ethernet service and choose Make Service Active.
If your Mac is connected to multiple networks, open the Action pop-up menu, choose Set Service Order, drag Ethernet above Wi-Fi, then click OK.
8. Remove router blocks and update firmware
A router can show a physical Ethernet link while blocking that device from Internet access.
In the NETGEAR Nighthawk app, connect your phone to the router Wi-Fi, open the app, sign in, tap Device List, then use the Pause or Resume slider for the device.
For NETGEAR Smart Parental Controls, open the Orbi or Nighthawk app, tap the Device Manager tile, swipe right on the device, then tap the pause or play icon to block or allow it.
In the NETGEAR router web page, open ADVANCED > Security > Access Control.
Clear Turn on Access Control to allow all devices, or move the blocked device to the allowed list with the Allow and Block controls, then click Apply to save.
Then update the router from current firmware tools.
For NETGEAR, connect a computer to the router, open routerlogin.net, sign in, then go to ADVANCED > Administration or Settings > Administration > Firmware Update or Router Update > Check.
If an update appears, choose Yes or Upgrade and wait for the router to restart.
For TP-Link routers that support TP-Link Cloud, connect your phone to the router Wi-Fi, open Tether, log in, tap the management icon, then go to More > System > Firmware Update.
Routers without Cloud support update manually from the web interface at tplinkwifi.net under Advanced > System > Firmware Upgrade.
Use official NETGEAR or TP-Link support pages for manual firmware downloads, and match the exact router model and hardware version before installing.

9. Use managed network settings or reset last
School, work, and apartment Ethernet networks can require wired 802.1X authentication.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet > Authentication settings > Edit > Ethernet authentication settings.
Turn on Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication only when the network requires it and you have the correct EAP or certificate details.
On Mac, install the provided .mobileconfig profile.
To view Ethernet 802.1X settings, open Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Ethernet > Details > 802.1X, then click Connect when a configured profile is available.
Factory reset the router only after cabling, patching, access controls, firmware, and device settings fail.
On NETGEAR, keep the router powered on and hold the rear or side Reset button for 15 seconds.
On TP-Link, keep the router powered on and hold Reset for more than or about 10 seconds, or use Advanced > System or System Tools > Backup and Restore > Factory Default Restore.
