HBO Max can stop working on Roku TV when the app session freezes, the Roku loses its network connection, sign-in fails, or your subscription is not recognized. Start with the fixes that refresh the app and connection without deleting anything, then move to reinstalling HBO Max only if the problem sticks.

These steps use the current Roku and HBO Max paths, including the official Streaming Store install flow.

Restart HBO Max and your Roku TV

Use this first when HBO Max opens to a blank screen, freezes, spins, or sends you back to the Roku Home screen. A restart clears a stuck app session without removing your settings.

Open HBO Max, choose the Settings icon, and select Sign Out. Return to the Roku Home screen. On a Roku TV, open Settings > System > Power > System restart.

If your Roku does not show Power, open Settings > System > System restart. Open HBO Max again, sign in, and try the same title. If the Roku menus are frozen, unplug the Roku TV from power, wait 20 seconds, plug it back in, and open HBO Max again.

Check the Roku internet connection

Press Home on your Roku remote. Open Settings. Go to Network > Check connection and let Roku test the connection.

If Roku is offline, open Settings > Network > About to check the Wi-Fi status. Choose Set up connection, select Wireless or Wired, pick your network, and enter the password. If your network is not listed, select Scan again and reconnect before trying HBO Max. Connect Roku to a phone hotspot once; if HBO Max works there, fix the home network next.

Update HBO Max and Roku OS

Old app or Roku software can keep HBO Max from loading correctly.

  1. 1.Highlight HBO Max on the Roku Home screen.
  2. 2.Press the Star button on your remote.
  3. 3.Choose Check for updates.
  4. 4.Open Settings > System > System update > Check now.
  5. 5.Let Roku install any available device or channel updates, then open HBO Max again.

Fix weak Wi-Fi or buffering

Try this when HBO Max opens but buffers, drops video quality, pauses, or fails during playback. The Roku connection may be active but too weak or crowded for streaming.

Pause large downloads and stop other active streams on computers, game consoles, phones, and other streaming players using the same internet connection. Restart your router, modem, or gateway by unplugging it from power for 10 seconds. Plug it back in, wait for it to restart, and try HBO Max again.

On Roku, open Settings > Network > About and check the signal. Move the Roku TV or router closer if the signal is weak. If your router lets you change Wi-Fi channels, use another 5 GHz channel when you are already on 5 GHz, or use channel 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz. Save the router change, restart the router, and test HBO Max again.

Use the right HBO Max sign in

When HBO Max asks you to sign in on Roku, choose Sign In and leave the TV on the screen with the QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone camera, or go to HBOMax.com/signin on a phone or computer and enter the 6-digit code shown on your TV.

If the 6-digit code fails, open a private or incognito browser window and go to HBOMax.com/signin again. You can also choose Use Email Address or scan the QR code instead.

Use Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari for the browser sign-in flow. When your password is the issue, choose Get One-Time Code, enter the 6-digit code from the HBO Max email, and update the password when prompted.

If you already added a mobile number to your HBO Max account in Settings, enter that mobile number instead of your email address when signing in.

Confirm your subscription is active

This fixes renew messages, missing access, and cases where Roku opens HBO Max but the account cannot play. On the HBO Max TV app, choose the Settings icon and open Subscription.

On a phone or tablet, choose your profile in the upper-right corner and select Subscription. On a computer, choose Subscription at the top of the HBO Max screen. Go to HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in, and check who bills your subscription at the top of the screen.

If your HBO Max subscription is billed through Roku, sign in at my.roku.com/account/subscriptions and confirm the HBO Max subscription status there. After confirming the subscription is active, return to HBO Max on Roku, open the Settings icon, choose Sign Out, and sign back in.

Connect the correct provider

If you get HBO Max through an internet, mobile, or TV provider, open HBO Max on your phone, tablet, or computer. On the Welcome back screen, choose Connect Your Provider. Select the company you get HBO Max or HBO through. On the provider sign-in screen, enter your provider account information and sign in.

If you subscribed to HBO Max on The Roku Channel, choose Connect Your Provider, search for Roku, select it, sign in with your Roku account, and choose Connect. You can also watch that subscription inside The Roku Channel on your Roku device, the Roku mobile app, or The Roku Channel website without a separate HBO Max sign-in.

If provider sign-in fails, sign in to your provider account outside HBO Max and confirm HBO Max is included before trying Connect Your Provider again.

Reinstall HBO Max on Roku

Reinstall HBO Max when updates and restarts do not fix crashing, stuck loading, or missing app behavior. If your HBO Max subscription was bought through Roku and is still active in the current billing cycle, Remove app may not appear.

Highlight HBO Max on the Roku Home screen, press the Star button, choose Remove app, and confirm with Remove. Restart Roku from Settings > System > Power > System restart, then reinstall the app from Streaming Store > Search > HBO Max > Add app.

You can remove it from the Roku mobile app by opening Devices, selecting the Apps on Roku tab, tapping and holding HBO Max, then choosing Remove. To add it back, open the mobile app Store, search for HBO Max, and select Add app.

Roku.com can add HBO Max but cannot remove apps. If you add it from channelstore.roku.com and it does not appear on the TV, run Settings > System > System update > Check now. If reinstalling fails, reset the Roku network connection before considering a factory reset.

Reset Roku network settings or factory reset last

This fixes deeper Roku connection or system problems after the normal HBO Max fixes fail. Press Home on the Roku remote. Open Settings. Select Advanced system settings.

Choose Network connection reset. Select Reset connection. After Roku restarts, return to Settings and set up your wireless network again. If HBO Max and other Roku apps still fail, use a factory reset only as a last resort.

Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset, choose Factory reset everything on a Roku TV, and follow the on-screen instructions. A factory reset erases preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and requires Guided Setup plus app sign-ins again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is HBO Max not working on my Roku TV but other apps work?

The issue is usually limited to the HBO Max app session, the app version, sign-in, or subscription access. Restart Roku, update HBO Max, sign out and back in, then reinstall the app if it still fails.

Why can't I remove HBO Max from my Roku TV?

If your HBO Max subscription was purchased through Roku and is still active in the current billing cycle, Roku may block app removal. Manage the subscription through Roku first, then remove the app when available.

Can I clear the HBO Max cache on Roku TV?

Roku does not provide a supported per-app cache clear control for HBO Max. Use System restart or unplug the Roku TV briefly instead.

What should I do if the HBO Max TV sign-in code does not work?

Open a private or incognito browser window at HBOMax.com/signin, try the QR code, or use Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari.
