Fortnite won’t launch, matchmaking keeps failing, or a login error keeps you out. Getting back in starts with finding where things stop working: Epic’s services, your connection, your account, or the game itself. Start with the server check, then jump to the fix that matches your device and symptom.

Check whether Epic’s services are down

This check identifies an outage that requires recovery on Epic’s side. Open Epic Games Public Status to inspect Fortnite, login, matchmaking, and related services, including when you play through a cloud service.

If an affected service is unavailable, follow the incident’s instructions. Wait for service recovery before troubleshooting your device. When services are operational, search Epic’s support site for your exact error message.

Check the official Fixes, Improvements & Known Issues Communities page linked from Epic’s live-issues page for a matching problem. Check Fortnite News for game updates. Check @FortniteStatus for service and experience-specific updates.

Get Fortnite up to date on your platform

On Windows, launch Fortnite through Epic Games Launcher to trigger an available update. Let installation finish before trying again.

On PS4 or PS5, highlight Fortnite, press Options, and select Check for Update. On Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, press the Xbox button and open My Games & Apps > See All > Games > Fortnite, then select Update when offered.

On Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, highlight Fortnite on HOME without launching it. Press + or −, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet.

On mobile, use the store that supplied your installation: Epic’s mobile store uses Fortnite > Update. In Google Play, open the profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available and update Fortnite if listed. In Apple’s App Store, open the profile icon > App Updates and install Fortnite’s available update.

Test your home connection when matches disconnect

If Epic’s services are working but your connection keeps dropping, work through these checks.

  1. 1.Turn off your gaming device.
  2. 2.Disconnect your modem and router from power for at least one minute.
  3. 3.Reconnect the network equipment and wait for its connectivity indicators to recover.
  4. 4.Restart your gaming device and test its connection.
  5. 5.Connect by Ethernet if your device supports it.
  6. 6.Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams on the same network while testing Fortnite.

Resolve login errors through your Epic account

Incorrect credentials or an interfering VPN can stop Fortnite at the sign-in screen. Disconnect your VPN for a login test, then disable any personally configured proxy for the same test.

Turn off autofill before entering your credentials. Select the correct keyboard language, then enter your Epic email and password manually. Select Forgot Password if you need to reset your password.

For an invalid emailed authentication code, wait thirty seconds. Select Resend code, then enter the newest code.

Synchronize your device’s time if authenticator codes fail. On Windows, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Enable Set time automatically, then set the correct time zone.

Choose Try another way when your selected authentication method fails. If a console account is linked to an unexpected Epic account, open Epic’s sign-in page in an Incognito window. Select your console’s icon, then sign in with that console’s credentials to identify the linked Epic account.

For a rate-limit message, wait several minutes before retrying. If the limit persists, wait twenty-four hours, as Epic advises.

Repair game files and launcher problems on Windows

These repairs address damaged Fortnite files and launcher failures. In Epic Games Launcher, select Library > Fortnite > … > Manage > Verify. Wait for validation and repairs to finish, then launch Fortnite again.

If the launcher itself is failing, open the settings icon beside your profile. Open Settings and select RESTART AND UPDATE when offered. Accept the Windows permission prompt if requested.

For a persistent launcher problem, right-click Epic’s system-tray icon and select Exit. Press Windows+R to open Run. Enter %localappdata% to open your local application-data folder, then open EpicGamesLauncher\Saved.

Delete the folders named webcache, webcache_4147, and webcache_4430 that are present. Reopen Epic Games Launcher, then launch Fortnite to test it.

If Fortnite works from the launcher but its desktop shortcut fails, delete the existing desktop shortcut. Create its replacement through Library > Fortnite > … > Manage > Create Desktop Shortcut.

Handle an Easy Anti-Cheat error directly

Restart your PC when Fortnite reports that Easy Anti-Cheat is missing. Launch Fortnite, then accept the Easy Anti-Cheat installation prompt.

If the installation or launch error continues, select Library > Fortnite > … > Manage > Open Install Location in Epic Games Launcher. Open FortniteGame\Binaries\Win64\EasyAntiCheat. Create a shortcut to the Easy Anti-Cheat executable in that folder, then open the shortcut’s Properties.

Append a space followed by repair to the existing Target, keeping the executable path intact. Select OK, then run the shortcut. Approve the request to make changes and retry Fortnite after the repair.

Tip: If Easy Anti-Cheat installation keeps failing, reinstall Fortnite on the drive containing Windows using the reinstall steps below.

Tackle crashes and black screens on PC

If you can reach Fortnite’s menu, press Esc and open the gear icon. Select Video > Rendering Mode > Performance. Apply the change and restart when prompted.

If crashes, freezing, or a black screen block that menu, open Epic Games Launcher’s Settings and expand Fortnite. Enable Additional Command Line Arguments and enter -d3d12 -es31. Launch Fortnite to use Performance Mode.

To identify your GPU, press Windows+R, enter dxdiag, and select Save all information. Read the saved file’s Display Devices section for your graphics hardware and manufacturer. Install the matching current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.

Still seeing advice about DirectX 11? Epic removed that option from Rendering Mode. Skip the older -d3d11 workaround and use the Performance Mode instructions above.

Restart or clear the cache on console and mobile

On Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2, hold the physical POWER button for three seconds. Select Power Options > Restart. If a Switch 2 is unresponsive, hold POWER for twelve seconds to shut it down, then turn the Switch 2 back on. On Switch 2, check Fortnite through HOME > System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > Fortnite > Scan for Corrupted Data.

For persistent PS5 problems, turn the console off before clearing its system cache. Hold the PS5 power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache.

On a compatible Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher. On a supported Home-button iPhone, double-click Home to open the app switcher. Swipe Fortnite’s preview upward to close it, then reopen Fortnite.

On Android, open Fortnite’s app-management screen in Settings. Its location depends on your device manufacturer. Select Force stop, then relaunch Fortnite.

On a compatible Samsung Galaxy, select Settings > Apps > Fortnite > Storage > Clear cache. Reopen Fortnite after clearing its cache.

If these steps fail, try the platform-specific reinstall steps below. On Android, first check compatibility: native Fortnite requires 64-bit Android on ARM64, Android 10 or later, at least 4 GB RAM, and supported graphics, including Adreno 530 or higher, Mali-G71 MP20, or Mali-G72 MP12 or higher.

Reinstall Fortnite when simpler repairs fail

A fresh installation addresses persistent game-installation problems after updates and repairs. On Windows, remove Fortnite through Epic Games Launcher > Library > Fortnite > … > Uninstall. Select the Fortnite tile again to reinstall it.

On PS4 or PS5, highlight Fortnite. Press Options, then select Delete. Download Fortnite again from your console’s game library or PlayStation Store.

On Xbox Series X|S, open My Games & Apps > Games. Highlight Fortnite and press the Menu button. Select Uninstall, then download Fortnite again from the Xbox store or library.

On Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, highlight Fortnite. Press +, then select Manage Software > Delete Software. On Switch 2, select HOME > System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > Fortnite > Delete Software. Reinstall Fortnite through Nintendo eShop using the appropriate Nintendo account.

On Android, uninstall Fortnite using your device’s app-removal control. Reinstall it through an official distribution route listed on Fortnite’s mobile page for your device and region.

On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Fortnite. Select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Reinstall through an official route available in your region.

Sign back into the same Epic account. Fortnite progress and owned items are account-based. If Fortnite still fails, open the Fortnite Help Center.

Choose Player Support or Contact Us for game or account help. Contact the platform manufacturer’s support service for continuing console or hardware failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Fortnite offline while the servers are down?

No. Fortnite has no offline-play mode. Cloud gaming also depends on functioning Epic services and a suitable internet connection.

Can I play while my PC installation is broken?

Yes, through Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported devices and in supported regions. Open xbox.com/play in a supported browser, sign in with a Microsoft account, and select Fortnite. A paid Game Pass subscription is not required.

Why can I play Fortnite but not enter a particular experience?

Parental content restrictions, Creative permissions, play-time limits, and account or matchmaking sanctions restrict access separately. A parent can review Parental Controls in the child’s Epic Account Portal. For a sanction, open Epic’s Sanctions and Appeals page and select GO TO MY SANCTIONS & APPEALS to review the restriction and appeal if eligible.

What should I send Epic Support after a PC crash?

Collect the files in %localappdata%\FortniteGame\Saved\Logs immediately after the crash. Press Windows+R, enter dxdiag, and select Save all information. Open Run again, enter msinfo32, and select File > Save. Attach the requested files to your support ticket without ZIP or RAR compression.
