Your AirPods case should respond to a front double-tap only on models that support that control. If nothing happens, start by confirming the case type, then work through power, Bluetooth, reset, account, and service checks in the right order.

Here is the current Apple-supported path for AirPods 4 models and AirPods Pro 3.

1. Confirm Your Case Supports Double Tap

Front-case double-tap works on AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Pro 3. AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 1, and AirPods Pro 2 use the rear setup button instead.

  1. 1.On iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
  2. 2.Tap Bluetooth.
  3. 3.Tap the More Info button next to your AirPods.
  4. 4.Check the Model Number.

If you have AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3, ignore older instructions that tell you to hold a back setup button. That button path applies to older cases, not current double-tap cases.

2. Charge the Case Until the Light Responds

A drained case will not show a useful status-light response. Give the case power before you test the front tap again.

Put both AirPods in the charging case, then close the lid. Connect the correct Lightning or USB-C cable to the case, then charge the AirPods and case for at least 15 minutes.

For a Qi wireless charging case, place the case with the status light facing up. If the light does not turn on during wireless charging, reposition the case. If wireless charging still fails, use a compatible cable and USB power adapter.

After charging, check the battery status on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or charging case.

3. Clean the Case Before Another Test

Charging trouble can make the double-tap look broken. Clean the case and charging port, then let everything dry before reconnecting power.

Wipe the charging case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol, then let the case dry.

Remove debris from the charging port with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Keep liquid out of the charging ports. Do not use abrasive materials, and do not put anything into the charging ports that could damage the metal contacts.

4. Pair Again on iPhone or iPad

Go to the Home Screen on your iPhone or iPad. Put both AirPods in the charging case, then open the lid. Hold the case next to your iPhone or iPad.

If the setup animation does not appear, keep the lid open. Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. Open Settings > Bluetooth, then select your AirPods when they appear.

AirPods 4 require iOS 18.0 or later. AirPods Pro 3 require iOS 26 or later.

5. Connect From Mac or Android Bluetooth

On Mac, open Apple Menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, then turn on Bluetooth. Put both AirPods in the case, open the lid, then double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. Click Connect next to the AirPods in Nearby Devices.

On Android, the exact menu names vary by brand. On a Pixel or other stock Android phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device. On a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.

Either way, make sure Bluetooth is on. Put the AirPods in the case, open the lid, then double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. Select the AirPods in the Bluetooth device list. Siri is not available on non-Apple devices.

6. Run the Connection Checks Before Resetting

Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Put both AirPods in the charging case, then make sure both AirPods are charging.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth. On Mac, open Apple Menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth.

Open Control Center. Tap or click the AirPlay button, then select your AirPods if they are listed.

If they do not appear or will not connect, close the case lid, wait 15 seconds, open it, then double-tap the front of the case until the light flashes white. Follow the onscreen steps.

7. Reset the Case With Three Double Taps

Use this reset sequence for AirPods 4 models and AirPods Pro 3.

Put the AirPods in the charging case. Close the lid and wait 30 seconds.

On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If your AirPods appear in the My Devices list, tap the More Info button next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then confirm. If they do not appear, continue to the next step.

Open the charging case lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on. Double-tap again when the status light flashes white. Double-tap a third time when the status light flashes faster.

Wait until the status light flashes amber, then white. Reconnect using the onscreen steps.

If the status light does not flash white, close the case for 20 seconds, open the lid, and repeat the same three double-tap sequence.

8. Update Firmware Through Apple’s Automatic Process

There is no manual AirPods firmware download. Apple delivers AirPods firmware updates automatically when the right conditions are met.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Turn on Bluetooth, then connect the AirPods by Bluetooth. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.

Connect the charging case to power. Put the AirPods in the charging case, then close the lid. Keep the case in Bluetooth range of the iPhone, iPad, or Mac for at least 30 minutes, then open the lid to reconnect.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the More Info button next to your AirPods, then scroll to the About section to check the firmware version.

On Mac, open Apple Menu > System Settings > Bluetooth > Info to check the firmware version.

9. Remove Account Locks or Get Service

Second-hand AirPods that are still paired to another person’s Apple Account will not pair with yours until that previous owner removes Find My Lock.

An Apple-supplied replacement AirPod or charging case is different: it has no previous owner, so you set it up with Apple’s replacement steps.

Put both AirPods in the case. Connect power, then wait 20 minutes. Run the double-tap reset before pairing.

On the previous owner’s iPhone or iPad, open Find My > Devices or Items, select the AirPods, swipe up on the handle, then tap Remove, Remove Item, or Remove This Device.

On Mac, open Find My > Devices, select the AirPods, click the More Info button, then click Remove This Device.

On the web, sign in to iCloud.com, open Find My or Find My Devices, select the AirPods, then choose Remove or Remove This Device.

Apple cannot remove Find My Lock for you. On a work or school iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If a profile blocks Bluetooth changes, contact the organization’s IT admin.

When the front-case sensor or status light still does not respond after charging, cleaning, updating, connection checks, and reset attempts, use Apple Service and Repair for AirPods. Apple offers troubleshooting, repair, replacement, Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider help, mail-in service, and replacement ordering for a lost AirPod or case.
