Chrome Remote Desktop can stall before the page loads, show a computer as offline, reject a PIN, or fail with an expired support code. Start with the current web portal, then work through the host, browser, network, permission, and device checks that usually clear the problem.
Start from the current web portal
Begin on Google's current Chrome Remote Desktop site so you are using the active web flow.
- 1.Open Chrome on the computer you want to use.
- 2.Go to remotedesktop.google.com.
- 3.Select Access my computer to connect to one of your own computers.
- 4.Select Provide Support for one-time help, whether you are sharing your computer or helping someone else.
- 5.Use remotedesktop.google.com/access or remotedesktop.google.com/support instead of old Chrome app launcher instructions.
Reinstall the remote host
This fixes a missing, broken, or stale host setup on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
On the host computer, open Chrome and go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.
Under Set up Remote Access, select Download.
Follow the onscreen directions to download and install Chrome Remote Desktop.
If the setup flow asks for the companion extension, open the Chrome Web Store listing for Chrome Remote Desktop.
Select Add to Desktop.
Return to remotedesktop.google.com/access and continue setup.
Update Chrome before changing deeper settings
Chrome Remote Desktop setup and management require Chrome and current web platform support. If remotedesktop.google.com/access or remotedesktop.google.com/support shows an unsupported-browser page, select Download Chrome, install Chrome, and try again in Chrome.
Open the top-right More menu, choose Help, then select About Google Chrome. Wait for Chrome to check for updates, then select Relaunch. If Relaunch is not shown, Chrome says it is already up to date.
If Chrome Remote Desktop still does not work after the update, reload remotedesktop.google.com/access and reinstall the host from Set up Remote Access.
Check the connection and firewall rules
When the page will not open or the host appears offline, confirm the network path before changing the remote setup.
- 1.Open remotedesktop.google.com/access on the computer you are using.
- 2.If the page will not load, check the computer's network settings and internet connection.
- 3.In antivirus, firewall, router, or security software, allow outbound UDP traffic.
- 4.Allow inbound UDP responses.
- 5.Allow traffic on TCP port 443 for HTTPS and traffic on TCP and UDP port 3478 for STUN.
Allow Chrome Remote Desktop in Windows Firewall
Use this on Windows 10 or Windows 11 when Chrome Remote Desktop works elsewhere but fails on that PC. A Windows Firewall allow-list entry or port rule can restore the connection.
Open Windows Security and go to Firewall & network protection.
Select Allow an app through firewall.
Select Change settings.
Allow Chrome or Chrome Remote Desktop if it is listed.
If it is not listed, select Allow another app and enter the app path.
For a port rule, return to Firewall & network protection.
Open Advanced settings.
Select Inbound Rules.
Choose New Rule....
Turn on Mac screen sharing and control permissions
This fixes a blank remote screen, a session that will not start sharing, or a Mac that connects but ignores mouse and keyboard input.
Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
Open Privacy & Security.
For a blank screen or failed sharing, open Screen & System Audio Recording.
Turn permission on for the relevant Chrome Remote Desktop or Chrome item.
If the item is missing, use the add button to add the app.
For mouse or keyboard control problems, return to Privacy & Security.
Open Accessibility.
Turn permission on for the relevant Chrome Remote Desktop or Chrome item.
If the app is missing, use the add button, select the app, and click Open.
Refresh the PIN, support code, or computer entry
The most common cause here is a stale computer entry, an old support code, or the wrong PIN.
For your own computer, go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.
Select Access, choose the computer, enter the PIN, then select the arrow to connect.
If that computer keeps failing, select Disable remote connections next to it.
Set it up again under Set up Remote Access with Download.
For one-time help, the person sharing their computer should go to remotedesktop.google.com/support.
Under Get Support, select Download if prompted and install the host.
Select Generate Code and send the code to the helper.
After the helper enters the code, select Share.
The helper should enter the code under Give support and select Connect.
If the code is invalid, generate a new one. Support codes work one time, and sharing must be reconfirmed every 30 minutes.
To end a stuck session, close the Chrome Remote Desktop tab or select Options and Disconnect. On a support host, select Stop Sharing.
Repair mobile access on Android, iPhone, and iPad
Android uses the official Chrome Remote Desktop app, while iPhone and iPad can use the browser and Home Screen route for full-screen access.
On Android, install or update Chrome Remote Desktop from Google Play. Open the app, tap Menu, choose Remote Access, tap the computer, enter the PIN, and tap the arrow.
If an old computer keeps appearing in the Android app, tap Delete next to that computer. During a session, tap the edge-of-screen arrow, open Input controls, and tap Configure touch input when touch or pointer behavior is wrong. Windows-only touch input modes are available only when the remote device runs Windows.
On iPhone or iPad, go to remotedesktop.google.com/access in the browser and sign in. Next to the address bar, tap Share, then tap Add to home screen.
Open Chrome Remote Desktop from the Home Screen, tap Menu, choose Remote access, select the computer, enter the PIN, and tap the arrow. To remove a stale computer on iPhone or iPad, tap Delete next to it.
If mobile access still fails, return to the host computer and reinstall Chrome Remote Desktop from remotedesktop.google.com/access.
Ask about work or school restrictions
The most common cause on a managed device is an organization policy that blocks Chrome Remote Desktop.
If the computer is on a work or school network, contact the administrator and ask whether Chrome Remote Desktop is allowed.
If you use a managed account, ask whether your account or device is permitted to use it.
Admins can turn the Chrome Remote Desktop service on or off for users.
Managed policies can also affect remote support, PIN authentication, client pairing, firewall traversal, and curtain mode.
Once an admin confirms access is blocked by policy, local troubleshooting will not turn Chrome Remote Desktop back on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Chrome Remote Desktop say my computer is offline?
Open remotedesktop.google.com/access first. If the page loads, reinstall the host on the remote computer and allow UDP, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 through firewall or security software.
Why is my Chrome Remote Desktop support code invalid?
Support codes work one time. Have the person sharing their computer generate a new code from remotedesktop.google.com/support, then enter it under Give support and connect again.
What should I do if Chrome Remote Desktop connects but shows a blank Mac screen?
On the Mac, open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording, and turn permission on for the relevant Chrome Remote Desktop or Chrome item.
Can I still use the old Chrome Remote Desktop Chrome app?
Use remotedesktop.google.com/access for remote access and remotedesktop.google.com/support for one-time support. The current setup uses the web flow and companion extension.
