You ask ChatGPT for an image, but the request keeps spinning, produces an error, or never gets started. A stalled response, an image-limit notice, and a failed upload each need a different fix. Start with a fresh request, then follow the section that matches what you see.
Get a fresh image request moving
Use the current image tool and allow time for generation before restarting the request.
- 1.Ask ChatGPT to create an image, or select More > Images and submit your description.
- 2.Wait a few minutes for a complex image request to finish.
- 3.If the response remains stalled, select Stop generating, then Regenerate where those controls are available.
- 4.If the controls are missing or the retry fails, start a new chat and resend the request, especially after a long conversation.
If you see an image-limit notice
An exhausted image allowance needs time to reset. Read the limit notice for the reset timing displayed in your account. Image creation and uploads have separate limits from ordinary text chat, so working text replies do not mean your image allowance is available.
Retry when image access returns. Free accounts support image generation; a paid plan is optional.
For an optional upgrade, select Get Plus in the image-limit notice, then complete the purchase flow for an upgrade offered in your account. Moving from Free to Plus, Pro, or Business resets usage limits.
A service incident can interrupt generation
Open OpenAI Status and check for a ChatGPT incident that matches your problem. During a matching incident, wait for service recovery.
Monitor the incident updates, then retry your image request after recovery. Status reporting is aggregate, so the page does not describe every account's experience.
If no incident matches, or generation still fails after recovery, try refreshing ChatGPT using the steps below.
Refresh ChatGPT and update the app
Reload the ChatGPT page, using Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac for a hard refresh where your browser supports it. For an app failure, close ChatGPT, then reopen the app. Sign out of ChatGPT, then sign back in to refresh your session.
On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store and select My Account or your profile photo. Open App Updates, then select Update beside ChatGPT.
On Android, open the Google Play Store, select your profile icon, and open Manage apps & device. Under Updates available, select See details, then select Update beside ChatGPT.
If the problem continues, restart your browser or device. Tip: Test ChatGPT in a browser on your phone to help isolate a mobile app failure.
Rule out a browser problem
These Chrome desktop steps test your browser session, extensions, and stored data.
- 1.Open More > New Incognito window, sign into ChatGPT, and retry the image request.
- 2.If it works in Incognito, return to your regular window and open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off a suspected script blocker, privacy extension, or content modifier, then retry.
- 3.Test suspected extensions one at a time. To uninstall a confirmed culprit, select Remove and confirm.
- 4.If the regular window still fails, open More > Delete browsing data. Choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data. Expect to sign back into websites whose login cookies you delete.
- 5.Sign back into ChatGPT and retry. If the failure persists, test another browser or a fresh browser profile.
Test a different connection
VPNs, proxies, and Web Protect filters are another place to check when requests stall or show connection errors or unusual-activity notices.
Temporarily disconnect your VPN, then retry the image request. Temporarily disable your proxy or Web Protect filter, testing each separately. The controls depend on the product. Resend the request after each change.
Try the request on another network to check whether the failure follows your connection. If changing networks makes no difference, try another device. For a failure that persists across browsers, devices, and networks, contact OpenAI Support using the final section.
When a reference image will not upload
An oversized file or unsupported image format prevents a reference image from uploading. Use a PNG, JPEG, or non-animated GIF no larger than 20 MB per image.
Attach it through + > Add photos & files. Dragging the image into the composer or pasting it from the clipboard are alternative upload methods.
If uploads still fail, reduce the number or size of your reference images. Upload allowances are separate from ordinary text chat limits.
If a generated image's selection tool fails, open the result and describe the desired change without selecting a region. On mobile, use Edit to enter the change.
When generation succeeds but the result is wrong, describe the subject, purpose, and style in one to three clear sentences. Request one targeted change at a time, specifying what must remain unchanged. Clearer instructions address image quality; outages and exhausted limits require the fixes above.
Account access and image restrictions
If an App Store or Google Play subscription is missing, check the account email on another device where the subscription works. Sign out of ChatGPT, then sign into the account used for the original purchase. Reinstalling does not transfer a subscription between accounts.
For an Apple App Store purchase, open the ChatGPT iOS app and select Settings > Account > Restore purchases. This route applies to Apple purchases, not subscriptions purchased on the web.
For a linked teen account, ask the parent or guardian to review image access. They open Settings > Parental controls, select the teen under Family members, and enable Image generation if appropriate.
For a work or school account, ask the workspace owner to review feature permissions and available credits. Ask IT to investigate network blocking if requests fail on the managed network. On a managed Mac with persistent certificate or network-configuration errors, use ChatGPT web as the fallback.
Get help with a persistent failure
For an explicit content or security block, read the applicable usage policies linked in OpenAI's blocked-prompt help page. To appeal a mistaken block, provide the exact prompt and error to Support.
Open OpenAI Help, then select the bottom-right chat bubble to contact Support. Include your account, plan, exact error, reproduction steps, timestamp and time zone, device and browser versions, and the relevant conversation or GPT link.
If the failure persists and Support requests browser diagnostics, follow its HAR recording instructions to capture the failed request. Remove sensitive information before sharing the recording.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the ChatGPT desktop app generate images?
Yes. Describe the image in the current desktop app's composer. For an editing request, attach a reference image. Open a result and use Canvas view > Comment for targeted revisions, subject to account access.
How do I save an image that ChatGPT already generated?
Open Images, select the result, and choose Save. Copy and Share provide alternative output actions.
Should I use the DALL·E GPT if ChatGPT Images fails?
No. The official DALL·E GPT is retired. Older workarounds that tell you to select GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o4-mini, or o3 are also obsolete in current ChatGPT.
Will reinstalling ChatGPT reset my image limit?
No. Reinstalling does not reset usage allowances or repair a service outage. For an iOS app that keeps crashing after a relaunch, check Compatibility in the official App Store listing before uninstalling and downloading it again.
