Your iPhone can show Bluetooth as connected while CarPlay never opens on the car screen. Wireless CarPlay also needs Wi-Fi, Siri, allowed CarPlay access, and a working saved vehicle profile. Start with the settings that control the wireless handoff, then rebuild the connection only if CarPlay still refuses to launch.

1. Turn on the wireless settings CarPlay needs

Bluetooth is only one part of wireless CarPlay. Wi-Fi must also be on, and the CarPlay network must be allowed to join automatically.

  1. 1.Open Settings > Bluetooth, then turn on Bluetooth.
  2. 2.Open Settings > Wi-Fi, then turn on Wi-Fi.
  3. 3.Tap the CarPlay network for your vehicle.
  4. 4.Turn on Auto-Join.
  5. 5.Open Settings > General > CarPlay, then select your car.

If Bluetooth connects but CarPlay never appears, this is the first place to fix it. Wireless CarPlay depends on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth alone.

2. Start pairing from the car screen

Start the car.

Make sure Siri is on.

Next, press and hold the steering-wheel voice command button.

Put the stereo in wireless or Bluetooth mode.

On iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the CarPlay network, then turn on Auto-Join.

After that, open Settings > General > CarPlay, then choose your car.

Set up wireless CarPlay from the vehicle side instead of waiting for the iPhone to trigger it by itself. When the car detects the iPhone but stays on the regular infotainment screen, tap the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.

3. Allow Siri and CarPlay restrictions

CarPlay requires Siri, so check Siri before deleting the car profile.

Open Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.

Tap Talk to Siri.

Then choose Siri or Hey Siri or Hey Siri. On supported models and regions you can also enable saying just Siri.

Turn on Press Side Button for Siri when you use the side button for Siri.

Turn on Allow Siri When Locked.

Then check Screen Time. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are on, tap Allowed Apps, then make sure CarPlay is enabled.

4. Restart the iPhone and the car

Restart both sides before rebuilding the pairing. Apple includes restarting the iPhone and the car in its CarPlay troubleshooting steps.

On iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, or later, press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

On iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd generation, press and hold the side button until the slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Turn the car off and back on according to the vehicle manual.

If the iPhone is frozen, press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

5. Forget the car and pair it again

A stale saved vehicle profile can leave Bluetooth connected while CarPlay fails to launch. Remove the saved CarPlay and Bluetooth records from both sides, then pair again.

On iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.

Tap your car, then tap Forget This Car.

Open Settings > Bluetooth.

Tap the Info button next to the vehicle or stereo.

Tap Forget This Device.

Delete the iPhone from the vehicle Bluetooth or device list.

Finally, put the car stereo back in pairing or discovery mode, then set up CarPlay again.

Car menus differ by brand. Toyota’s support path uses Settings > Bluetooth & devices > select the device > Forget. Ford SYNC guidance uses Settings > Phone List, then deletes the phone profile. BMW guidance says to delete the phone in the vehicle, then delete the BMW from iPhone Bluetooth settings.

When the car has several saved phones or duplicate iPhone names, rename the iPhone at Settings > General > About > Name, then connect again.

6. Test CarPlay with a direct USB cable

A wired test separates a wireless pairing problem from a broader CarPlay problem, but only on cars that support CarPlay over USB. Many wireless-only systems, including BMW vehicles equipped with CarPlay, offer no USB CarPlay connection; skip this test there and stay with the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto-Join, and saved-profile checks. If your car supports wired CarPlay, plug the iPhone into the vehicle USB port marked with a CarPlay icon or smartphone icon, using an Apple USB cable.

Use a different USB cable if wired CarPlay does not start.

Use a different USB port if the vehicle has more than one.

With a USB-C iPhone, avoid adapter and cable combinations that disrupt wired CarPlay.

For a wired-only car, use a direct USB cable connection.

If wired CarPlay works and wireless CarPlay does not, return to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto-Join, and the saved vehicle profiles.

7. Update iOS and the car stereo firmware

Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting starts with making sure the iPhone has the latest iOS version. Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update appears, tap Download and Install, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If over-the-air update is not practical, use a Mac with macOS Catalina or later. Open Finder, connect the iPhone, select the device in the Finder sidebar, click General, click Check for Update, then click Download and Update.

Also check the vehicle manual, manufacturer support site, or vehicle app for stereo or infotainment firmware updates. Apple says the CarPlay stereo should use the latest firmware from the car manufacturer.

8. Confirm support before deeper resets

CarPlay is built into iOS, and there is no separate CarPlay app to download. It works with supported iPhones and supported vehicles in supported countries and regions.

Check Apple’s CarPlay availability and supported vehicle information. If the vehicle support details are unclear, contact the vehicle manufacturer. For iPhone, use CarPlay rather than iPad or iPod touch.

Some vehicles provide a supported infotainment reboot. BMW’s verified iDrive example is to put the car in standby state, then press and hold the mute or VOL button near the center console for up to 70 seconds. For other vehicles, use the owner’s manual or manufacturer instructions.

9. Reset network settings last

Use the iPhone network reset after the direct pairing fixes fail. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This removes network settings, previously used networks, and VPN settings not installed by a configuration profile or device management, then turns Wi-Fi off and back on.

If the problem started after installing a VPN or configuration profile, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select the profile, then tap Remove Profile. On a personally owned managed iPhone, remove management from the same area when the option is available. For a work or school iPhone, contact the administrator.

Do not use the old “turn Bluetooth off after pairing” advice as a wireless CarPlay fix. Apple’s current wireless CarPlay setup requires Bluetooth on, Wi-Fi on, and Auto-Join enabled for the CarPlay network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Bluetooth connected but CarPlay not working?

Wireless CarPlay needs Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto-Join, Siri, allowed CarPlay access, and a valid saved vehicle profile. Bluetooth can connect while one of those requirements stops CarPlay from opening.

Do I need to download a CarPlay app?

No. CarPlay is built into iOS. Use the built-in CarPlay settings on iPhone and the vehicle’s supported CarPlay system.

Should I delete my car from Bluetooth or from CarPlay settings?

Delete both records when rebuilding the connection. Use Settings > General > CarPlay > your car > Forget This Car, then Settings > Bluetooth > vehicle Info button > Forget This Device. Also delete the iPhone from the vehicle’s device list.

Why are my CarPlay apps missing after CarPlay connects?

That is an app display issue. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay > choose your car > Customize to add, remove, or rearrange apps. If an app is locked or hidden on iPhone, unlock or unhide it before expecting its information in CarPlay.
