Your Xfinity router has no lights and won't respond. Start with the outlet and power cable, then give the gateway a full restart. Here's how to tell whether it has lost power, has a failed indicator light, or needs replacing.

Check the power connection first

Make sure the gateway's power cable is securely connected. Then test the outlet or power strip with another working device. If that device doesn't receive power either, connect the gateway to an outlet you've confirmed works. Complete these electrical checks before requesting a replacement; Xfinity recommends them first for an unresponsive gateway.

Give the gateway a full power cycle

A power cycle addresses an unresponsive gateway with a working electrical supply. Disconnect the gateway's power cable and leave it disconnected for one minute. Then reconnect the power cable.

Allow about 12 minutes for the restart to finish. Internet and Xfinity Voice, including home-phone emergency calling, are unavailable during the restart.

Read the light before trying another fix

A dark light doesn't tell the whole story. Xfinity's gateway light chart classifies no light as off, but an indicator can fail while the gateway continues providing internet access.

If your internet still works, confirm that your device is connected to your own gateway's network. Open the Xfinity app's WiFi tab to check its connection status. Contact Xfinity about replacement if the gateway works but its indicator stays dark.

Steady white after activation means the gateway is operational. Steady red means no internet connection, while blinking blue means WPS pairing.

For other color combinations, allow approximately 15 minutes for the gateway to connect to Xfinity's systems. Contact support if it doesn't finish. These meanings apply to gateways covered by Xfinity's light chart, not WiFi Pods or Storm-Ready WiFi accessories.

Clear space around a gateway that keeps restarting

Blocked ventilation and nearby heat cause overheating, which triggers protective reboots on XB6 and newer gateways. Move the gateway to an open location away from enclosed cabinets, direct sunlight, heat vents, and hot electronics. Keep it off carpet, rugs, and blankets.

Clear anything obstructing its vents, then wipe accumulated exterior dust away with a dry cloth. Better ventilation addresses overheating and repeated restarts. It won't restore power from a failed electrical supply.

Request a replacement if it stays unresponsive

Still no lights or response after the electrical checks and power cycle? Request a replacement from Xfinity. For an unresponsive gateway, Xfinity identifies replacement as the next step after checking the outlet and power cable.

Using another internet connection, open the Xfinity app. Select Services, then select Ask Xfinity Assistant. Sign in to Assistant.

Select Troubleshooting help, then select Internet. Explain that the gateway has no lights after you checked its electrical power. Assistant can arrange help, but remote diagnostics cannot restore electricity to the device.

For an in-person exchange of rented equipment, visit an Xfinity Retail Store. Return the old rented equipment within 30 days through a store, prepaid return shipment, or the installing technician. For customer-owned equipment, use the owner's or manufacturer's replacement process. If Assistant doesn't resolve the issue, connect with a live chat agent to request help replacing the unresponsive gateway.

Troubleshoot the connection once power returns

Use these checks when the gateway has power but your internet is still down. Outages, billing issues, and loose coaxial connections affect service; they don't explain missing electrical power.

Check that the equipment cables are plugged in. Tighten the coaxial cable as much as possible at both the wall outlet and the gateway. Ask Xfinity Assistant to check for an outage. Check your payment status under Manage billing in the Xfinity app or the Billing tab on xfinity.com.

For a rented Xfinity Gateway, sign in to the Xfinity app to run a whole home network test. It excludes the DPC3939 and X5001 models. Select WiFi at the bottom of the app, then select Troubleshoot.

Tap Test your whole home network. The app measures the speed to your gateway and the connection strength to your devices. Follow the resulting restart, upgrade, or technician prompts. A gateway without power cannot complete a gateway speed test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I factory reset an Xfinity gateway that has no power?

No. A factory reset requires power, erases customized settings, and cannot fix an electrically dead gateway. Xfinity's recessed Reset button procedure applies specifically to XB2 and XB3; don't apply it to newer models.

Can the Xfinity app turn my gateway back on?

The app can restart a supported rented gateway that can receive the request. It cannot electrically switch on a dead device. For a responsive gateway, sign in to the Xfinity app. Select WiFi, then Troubleshoot, then Restart your Gateway. Allow about 12 minutes. Internet and Xfinity Voice, including home-phone emergency calling, are unavailable during the restart.

How can I contact Xfinity without using the app?

Using another internet connection, open Xfinity's Support page. Select Chat with Xfinity Assistant. You can also text your question to 266278. Explain that the gateway has no lights after you checked its power connection.

Can I use the online equipment upgrade page to replace a broken gateway?

The page at xfinity.com/equipmentupdate handles eligible equipment upgrades. It isn't a universal replacement form for defective gateways. Contact Xfinity about the failure or visit an Xfinity Retail Store to exchange rented equipment.
