An ecobee not connecting to Wi-Fi points to a dropped network connection, a weak signal, router security settings, or cloud registration trouble. Start on the thermostat screen before changing router settings or resetting anything. The fixes below move from the fastest, least destructive options to the deeper resets.

Start with the thermostat Wi-Fi menu

The most common cause is that the thermostat is no longer joined to your home Wi-Fi network or has the wrong saved password.

On Smart Thermostat Premium, Smart Thermostat Enhanced, SmartThermostat with voice control, ecobee4, ecobee3, and similar full-menu touchscreen models, open Main Menu, then General Settings, then Settings, then WiFi, then Select WiFi Network.

Choose your home network and enter the password carefully.

On Smart Thermostat Lite and Smart Thermostat Essential, open Main Menu, then Settings, then WiFi, then Select WiFi Network.

Choose your home network and enter the Wi-Fi password.

When your network does not appear, turn the thermostat Wi-Fi radio on. Go to Main Menu, then General Settings, then Settings, then Wi-Fi, and set Wi-Fi Radio to Enabled.

Check whether ecobee is down

Before you touch router settings, rule out an ecobee service outage.

  1. 1.Open the ecobee status page.
  2. 2.Check Thermostat Online Services, Mobile Services, ecobee Public API, ecobee.com, and Integration Services.
  3. 3.When one of those services is degraded or in outage, wait for ecobee to resolve it.
  4. 4.When the status page is normal, continue with the thermostat and home-network fixes below.

Confirm what the thermostat says

The app can show your ecobee as offline while the thermostat screen stays powered on, so read the Wi-Fi status from the thermostat itself. On most current touchscreen models, open Main Menu, then General Settings, then About, then WiFi.

On Smart Thermostat Lite and Smart Thermostat Essential, open Main Menu, then About, then WiFi. Review the Wi-Fi status and signal details shown there.

When the thermostat is joined to Wi-Fi but does not show a connection to ecobee.com, use the router and firewall fixes below.

Improve a weak signal

This fixes ecobee thermostats that appear online briefly, then drop offline again.

Open Main Menu, then General Settings, then About, then Wi-Fi, then Signal Strength.

Look for signal strength above 75 percent.

Move the router or access point closer to the thermostat when the signal is lower.

Reduce obstructions and nearby interference between the router and thermostat.

Add or adjust Wi-Fi coverage when the thermostat is far from your router or mesh node.

Restart the router and power cycle the thermostat

Reboot your Wi-Fi router or modem first.

Wait until the router is fully online again.

Remove the thermostat from its wall plate.

Wait briefly, then snap the thermostat back onto the wall plate.

When it does not reconnect automatically, open Main Menu, then Settings, then Wi-Fi, then Network, then Select Wi-Fi Network, and join your network again.

Use this restart before deleting the thermostat from your account or wiping local settings.

Fix router security, bands, and blocking

This fixes cases where the ecobee sees Wi-Fi but cannot join, cannot get an IP address, or cannot reach ecobee services.

Open your router or mesh system's admin app.

Set the network to a security mode supported by your thermostat. Current setup guidance lists WPA/WPA2-AES support; current product specs list WPA, WPA2, and WPA3 for Premium and Enhanced, and WPA2 and WPA3 for Essential and Lite.

When your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name and the thermostat fails to join, disable band steering or create a separate 2.4 GHz network name.

Reconnect the thermostat from Main Menu, then General Settings, then Settings, then WiFi, then Select WiFi Network. On Lite and Essential, use Main Menu, then Settings, then WiFi, then Select WiFi Network.

Disable MAC Filtering or add the ecobee to the allowed device list.

Lower the router firewall strength and allow outbound access to ecobee.com for all ports.

Make sure DHCP is working, or assign a valid static or reserved IP address for the ecobee device.

Skip older Wi-Fi instructions

Older ecobee SMART, Smart Si, EMS, and EMS Si guides use paths such as More, then Settings, then Wi-Fi, and mention older security options like WEP. Do not use those instructions for the current Premium, Enhanced, Essential, and Lite models, or for the discontinued ecobee4 and ecobee3, which use the modern menus below and still have full access to ecobee's guides and support.

Current thermostats use the thermostat Wi-Fi menus above. There is no current vendor-supported WPS method, browser method, web portal method, or voice-assistant method for changing an ecobee thermostat's Wi-Fi.

The web portal and voice assistants work after the device is online. For work, apartment, hotel, or other managed networks, avoid enterprise and captive-portal Wi-Fi for home pairing and use a regular supported home Wi-Fi network.

Reset registration or factory reset at the end

When Wi-Fi and router fixes do not bring the thermostat back online, use the least destructive reset first.

  1. 1.On full-menu thermostats, open Main Menu, then General Settings, then Settings, then Reset, then Reset Registration.
  2. 2.On Smart Thermostat Lite and Smart Thermostat Essential, open Main Menu, then Settings, then Reset, then Reset Registration.
  3. 3.Register and reconnect the thermostat again.
  4. 4.When the problem continues, choose Reset All from the same reset menu.
  5. 5.Run setup again and reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward.

Update the app and fix cameras separately

This fixes setup problems caused by an outdated mobile app or by using thermostat steps on a camera or doorbell.

On Android, open Google Play, search for ecobee, choose ecobee by ecobee inc., then tap Install or Update.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, search for ecobee, choose ecobee, then tap Get or Update.

For SmartCamera with voice control, press and hold the Mute and Voice Assistant buttons on top of the camera until you hear the voice menu, then release them.

Open the ecobee app, tap Camera, and follow the in-app Wi-Fi setup prompts.

When a SmartCamera shows offline, restart the ecobee app.

Turn the camera off and back on.

Use the SmartCamera Wi-Fi reset and reconnect flow in the app.

For Smart Doorbell Camera wired, open the ecobee app and go to Settings, then Device Settings, then Remove Device.

Press the doorbell Reset button.

Add the doorbell again in the ecobee app and enter the Wi-Fi credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my ecobee say offline when the thermostat screen is on?

The thermostat is powered but disconnected from Wi-Fi or unable to reach ecobee.com. Check the thermostat's Wi-Fi status under About, then restart the router and power cycle the thermostat.

Does ecobee support 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Smart Thermostat Premium and Smart Thermostat Enhanced support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Smart Thermostat Essential and Smart Thermostat Lite support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6.

Will Reset Registration erase my HVAC setup?

Reset Registration keeps the equipment configuration. Use Reset All only as a last resort because it erases more local settings.

How do ecobee firmware updates work?

ecobee thermostats update automatically when an update is released and the thermostat is connected to Wi-Fi. Check the version from About on the thermostat, and contact ecobee support if it cannot update after reconnecting.
