Your AirPods Max show as connected, but the sound is silent, coming from another device, or stopping as soon as playback starts. Start with charge and output routing, then move through volume, pause settings, re-pairing, firmware, and reset steps in the order most connected-but-not-working cases need.

These fixes cover AirPods Max with iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Android, and Windows.

Wake AirPods Max And Check The Battery

Low battery leaves AirPods Max connected while controls and playback fail. Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, then plug the other end into a USB charger or USB port.

Press the listening mode button to check the status light. When AirPods Max are connected to power, green means the charge is at least 95 percent and amber means it is below 95 percent. When they are not connected to power, green means at least 15 percent and amber means below 15 percent. On AirPods Max 2, the light briefly pulses amber on power and briefly flashes amber off power instead of staying lit.

On iPhone or iPad, take AirPods Max out of the Smart Case, hold them near the device, open Bluetooth Settings, and tap the Info button next to your AirPods Max.

On Mac, take AirPods Max out of the Smart Case, hold them near the Mac, click Control Center, click Sound, and choose your AirPods.

Send Audio To AirPods Max

Use this when AirPods Max say connected, but sound still comes from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or another speaker. A Bluetooth connection does not always make AirPods Max the active audio output.

On iPhone or iPad, wear AirPods Max near the device.

Tap the AirPods icon on the Now Playing screen, the Lock Screen, or in Control Center.

Select your AirPods Max.

On Mac, wear AirPods Max near the computer.

Click the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar and select your AirPods Max.

Use Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select AirPods Max when the menu bar route is not the one you want.

On Apple Watch, press the side button to open Control Center.

Tap the AirPods icon on the right and select your AirPods Max.

On Apple TV, press the TV Control Center button on the Siri Remote when the AirPods Max name appears.

Stop Automatic Switching

This fixes audio that starts on AirPods Max, then jumps to another Apple device signed in with the same Apple Account.

Wear your AirPods Max.

Make sure they are connected to your iPhone or iPad.

Open Settings.

Tap the name of your AirPods Max near the top of the screen.

Tap Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad.

Choose When Last Connected to This iPhone or When Last Connected to This iPad.

On Mac, open System Settings.

Click the name of your AirPods Max in the sidebar.

Set Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity.

Turn on Keep Audio with Headphones.

Raise The Volume And Restart Playback

The most common cause here is paused audio or volume controlled from a different place.

Turn the Digital Crown on AirPods Max to raise the volume.

Raise the volume on your phone, tablet, computer, or TV as well.

Press the Digital Crown once to play or pause audio.

Press the Digital Crown again to resume playback.

Take AirPods Max off your head.

Put AirPods Max back on within 15 seconds to resume playback.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, choose your AirPods Max, then open Digital Crown to change the Crown direction.

Disable Automatic Head Detection

Automatic Head Detection pauses audio when AirPods Max are removed, and an incorrect detection stops playback while they remain connected. Wear AirPods Max and make sure they are connected before changing the setting.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods Max near the top of the screen, and turn Automatic Head Detection off.

Try audio again in the same app that stopped playing.

On Mac, open System Settings, click the name of your AirPods Max in the sidebar, and turn Automatic Head Detection off.

Turn Automatic Head Detection back on after the pausing problem is gone.

Center Balance And Reset Sound Settings

The most common cause is an accessibility or Music setting that makes AirPods Max sound quiet, one-sided, or different from normal stereo.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual.

Move the Balance slider to the center.

Turn Mono Audio off for normal stereo sound.

Open Settings > Apps > Music > EQ.

Choose Off.

Connect AirPods Max again.

Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations > Custom Audio Setup when you want to tune headphone audio after balance and EQ are back to normal.

Restart AirPods Max

Use this when output, volume, pause, and sound settings are correct, but AirPods Max still stay silent or behave inconsistently. A restart keeps the pairing intact, so run it before forgetting the device.

Charge AirPods Max to at least 50 percent.

Press and hold the listening mode button and the Digital Crown at the same time.

Release both buttons when the LED flashes amber.

Release at the amber flash, around 10 seconds, because holding longer starts the factory reset process.

Skip internal headband connector cleaning as a home fix. The supported home path is restart, unpair, factory reset, firmware update, or service.

Forget AirPods Max And Pair Again

Re-pairing helps when AirPods Max connect but audio still fails after output and settings checks. It removes the saved Bluetooth relationship, and on Apple devices it removes AirPods Max from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods Max near the top of the screen, and choose Forget This Device.

Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.

Take AirPods Max out of the Smart Case and hold them near the iPhone or iPad within 60 seconds.

Tap Connect.

Tap Done.

When the setup animation does not appear, press and hold the listening mode button for about 5 seconds until the status light flashes white.

Open Settings > Bluetooth and select your AirPods Max.

On Mac, open System Settings, click the name of your AirPods Max in the sidebar, and choose Forget This Device.

Open System Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.

Press and hold the listening mode button on AirPods Max for about 5 seconds until the status light flashes white.

Select AirPods Max in the devices list.

Click Connect.

If this method fails, update the paired device software and give AirPods Max time to update firmware before using a factory reset.

Update Firmware, Test Wired Audio, Then Reset

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update.

Tap Download and Install when an update is available.

On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Click Update, Upgrade, or Restart Now when prompted.

Keep AirPods Max connected by Bluetooth.

Connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.

Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone.

Keep AirPods Max in Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes.

Reconnect AirPods Max.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button next to AirPods Max, and scroll to About > Firmware Version.

On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and click the Info button next to AirPods Max.

For wired audio on Lightning AirPods Max, connect Apple’s Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable to AirPods Max and the headphone jack on the source.

For wired audio on USB-C AirPods Max, connect Apple’s USB-C to 3.5 mm Audio Cable to the headphone jack source. On AirPods Max 1 (USB-C) or AirPods Max 2, you can also connect USB-C to USB-C from AirPods Max to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a USB-C port running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, or later.

Turn on Bluetooth on the connected device for full USB-C functionality.

For Android, open Settings > Connected devices, open the AirPods Max settings, and turn on Media audio.

For Windows, open Start > Settings > System > Sound and choose AirPods Max as the output device.

On Windows, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer when only one app has no sound, then choose the correct Output device for that app.

Charge AirPods Max to at least 50 percent before a factory reset.

Hold the listening mode button and Digital Crown for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber and then white.

Pair AirPods Max again.

On a work or school device with blocked Bluetooth changes, ask the administrator to review the Bluetooth restriction.

Arrange Apple service when AirPods Max still have no audio after charge, output, settings, re-pairing, firmware, and reset fixes.

Remove the ear cushions before mailing AirPods Max for service.

Keep factory reset and service as the last steps, because most connected-but-not-working cases are fixed by output routing, volume, automatic switching, or a clean re-pair.
