Your Steam Deck won’t turn on, and pressing the button gets you nowhere. Start with the charging and power checks below, then move to startup recovery if the Deck shows signs of power. LCD and OLED models use different button-hold timings, so follow the instructions for yours.

Start with Power and the supplied charger

Press Power once to wake a sleeping Deck.

Connect the supplied power adapter directly to the Deck.

Check the charging LED. If it flashes when you press Power, leave the Deck charging for at least 15 minutes.

Press Power again after charging.

If the LED next to the charging port lights, the Deck is receiving charge. If the LED lights or the screen shows a logo or BIOS, continue with the startup steps below. If the LED stays dark and nothing responds, contact Steam Support using the steps at the end of this guide.

If charging does not get it started, try the first-start instructions below for a newly unboxed Deck or the forced restart for one you have already used.

Wake a newly unboxed Deck

Just taken your Deck out of the box? Its first-start procedure depends on the model.

For an LCD Steam Deck, briefly connect the supplied charger to exit shipment mode.

For an OLED Steam Deck, hold Power for 7 seconds. This first-start procedure does not require connecting the charger beforehand.

Give an unresponsive Deck a forced restart

A system hang leaves a powered Steam Deck unresponsive.

Hold Power for 4 seconds on LCD or 7 seconds on OLED to force a restart.

If that shorter hold fails, force a complete shutdown by holding Power for 10 seconds on LCD or 16 seconds on OLED.

Release the button after the shutdown hold.

Press Power again to start the Deck.

The timing matters, especially the longer OLED shutdown hold. If the Deck still has no charging indication or response, skip software recovery and contact Steam Support using the instructions below.

Check a blank screen while docked

Disconnect the external display to test handheld operation. Gaming Mode intentionally blanks the built-in screen while an external display is in use.

If handheld operation works, select the correct input on your TV or monitor.

Reseat the display cable.

Try a replacement display cable if the external screen remains blank.

Test another display input or another dock if the connection still fails.

To try external-display safe mode, undock the Deck.

Open Display.

Enable External display safe mode.

Reconnect the Deck to test the display.

If the dock still fails, disconnect the Deck, dock power supply, and display cables.

Reconnect them to reset the dock.

Once handheld operation works, focus on the dock and display connection.

Try BIOS startup and battery storage mode

If charging works but normal startup does not, hold Volume + while pressing Power to enter BIOS. Select Continue to try starting normally.

If that fails but BIOS remains accessible, shut down the Deck for a battery storage mode reset. Hold Volume + and press Power, releasing Volume + at the chime.

Use the D-pad and A button to select Setup Utility > Power > Battery storage mode. Confirm the selection.

The Deck powers off. On an LCD Deck, the power LED then blinks three times to confirm battery storage mode. On an OLED Deck, the power LED blinks blue twice after about eight seconds. Wait a few minutes, connect the supplied charger, and press Power to start the Deck.

Roll back SteamOS when startup stalls

A SteamOS startup fault prevents a powered Deck from reaching its normal interface.

To try the previous SteamOS installation, begin with the Deck shut down.

Connect the Deck to power.

Hold the ... button while pressing Power, keeping ... held until the SteamOS menu appears.

Select the previous installation, the second entry from the top, which Valve’s example menu shows as Previous B. This rollback retains user data and requires an available previous installation.

If rollback does not restore startup, try the USB repair below before choosing an option that erases your data.

Repair SteamOS from a recovery USB

A recovery USB provides a repair route for damaged SteamOS installations, provided the Deck boots external media. The Deck must power on and reach the Boot Manager to use it.

On another working computer, open Valve’s official SteamOS Deck Image download page.

Review the agreement.

Select the agreement checkbox to accept it.

Select Download SteamOS Image.

Write the downloaded image to an 8GB-or-larger USB drive using Rufus on Windows or balenaEtcher on macOS or Linux. This erases the USB drive.

Connect the prepared USB drive to the powered-off Steam Deck.

Hold Volume Up and press Power, releasing Volume Up at the chime.

Select Boot Manager.

Choose EFI USB Device.

Wait for the recovery desktop to load.

Select Repair SteamOS. This reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to retain games and personal content. Data preservation is not guaranteed.

If repair fails and you accept losing the Deck’s local data, choose Wipe Device & Install SteamOS from the recovery desktop. That is the label in Valve’s installation steps, while Valve’s list of recovery options names the full-wipe choice Re-image Device. Select whichever of these labels your recovery desktop shows. Valve describes both as completely wiping the internal drive and installing stock SteamOS.

Restart the Deck when installation finishes.

If recovery cannot start, the Deck still will not boot afterward, or you do not want to erase your data, contact Steam Support for diagnosis using the steps below.

Address recurring freezes after regaining access

Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.

Install available updates.

Restart through Steam > Power > Restart.

If instability continues, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. Use each application’s own controls to exit or disable it.

Select Steam > Power > Restart again to retest.

Use these steps once menus are accessible; software settings cannot restore absent electrical power.

Get help for a Deck that still has no response

Steam Support handles startup and power failures that the steps above do not fix. Valve notes that an issue may require replacement parts or a replacement of your product.

Open the Steam Deck support portal on another device.

Select Troubleshooting & Help With Device.

Follow the troubleshooting page to Contact Steam Support.

Supply your Deck’s serial number and symptoms, including whether the charging LED responds and whether BIOS opens.

Follow Valve’s repair or RMA instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I factory reset from Settings once the Deck starts?

Yes. Select Steam > Settings > System > Factory Reset. This erases local data. For an offline reset, disable Re-install SteamOS.

Can I erase user data without reaching Gaming Mode?

Yes, if the recovery menu works. From shutdown, hold ... while pressing Power, keeping ... held until the SteamOS menu appears. Select ERASE USER DATA FROM DECK. This deletes local user data.

Can a Bluetooth controller turn on a Steam Deck OLED?

It can wake a sleeping one. Valve added support for wake from Bluetooth controllers on Steam Deck OLED, so turning on a paired controller can resume it from sleep. If the Deck is shut down or out of charge, use Power and the charging steps instead.

Should I open the Steam Deck and disconnect its battery?

Internal repair is a separate, skilled procedure. Start with Steam Support for diagnosis. For component repair, select Visit iFixit for parts and repair guides on Valve’s support portal, then choose your exact Deck model and the diagnosed component.
