Your Schlage lock won’t connect to WiFi when the app setup, network band, password format, or signal at the door gets in the way. Start with the fastest checks, then move into the deeper fixes only if the lock still refuses to join the network.

Start With the Schlage Home App

Install or update the free Schlage Home app from Schlage’s app page, the Apple App Store, or Google Play. Schlage Home manages WiFi settings for supported locks including Sense Pro, Encode Plus, Encode, Encode Lever, Arrive, and Sense.

Open Schlage Home and sign in to your Schlage Home account. Keep Bluetooth enabled on your phone, because several WiFi setup and network-change screens need Bluetooth range.

If the app still does not find or connect the lock, use the correct pairing flow for your lock model before changing router settings.

Use the Right Pairing Path for Your Lock

This applies when the lock is new, was removed from the app, or never finished WiFi setup. The screens differ by model, so choose the exact product type in Schlage Home.

For an Encode Series lock, tap the plus icon, choose Add Lock, select or create the Home, name the lock, and continue through the prompts. Scan the QR code under the battery cover, or tap Try Another Method and enter the 6-digit programming code.

When prompted, quickly press and release the inside pairing button. Tap Connect Wi-Fi, select your WiFi network, enter the password, tap Connect Wi-Fi again, then finish the access-code setup.

For Sense Pro, verify model BE889, tap the plus icon, choose Lock, name the lock, and follow the app prompts. Remove the battery pack to scan the programming QR code, reinstall the battery pack, tap Continue, and press the blue button to start pairing mode.

Reconnect WiFi From Lock Settings

This fixes a lock that was added over Bluetooth only or needs to join a different WiFi network.

Stand within Bluetooth range of the lock. Open Schlage Home and select the lock. Tap the three dots next to the lock name.

Open Lock Settings. Open Wi-Fi Settings. Tap Select Different Network.

Choose your WiFi network. Enter the network password. Tap Connect Wi-Fi.

Put the Lock on 2.4GHz WiFi

Open your router app, internet provider app, or router admin settings. Create a separate 2.4GHz guest network with its own name and password. Use a network name that is different from your main WiFi name.

Retry WiFi setup in Schlage Home. Select the 2.4GHz network. If your router does not offer separate network names, temporarily disable the 5GHz band until the lock is paired. Schlage Sense Pro, Arrive, Encode Series, and Sense smart locks connect only to 2.4GHz WiFi.

Fix the WiFi Password and Security Type

A long or complicated WiFi password can stop pairing even when the network appears in the app. Set the password to 24 characters or fewer, remove spaces, and avoid unsupported special characters such as $ and &.

Use the right security mode for your lock. Encode Series, Arrive, and Sense use WPA or WPA2; Sense Pro uses WPA2 or WPA3 and does not support WEP or WPA1.

If your lock still will not connect after the password and security mode are corrected, check signal strength at the door.

Check WiFi Signal at the Door

Schlage Home can show the lock’s signal reading while you are near the lock.

  1. 1.Stand within Bluetooth range and open Schlage Home.
  2. 2.Select the lock and tap the three dots next to its name.
  3. 3.Open Lock Settings, then Wi-Fi Settings.
  4. 4.Tap Select Different Network, then Show Advanced.
  5. 5.Read the dBm value next to the network name.

Less than -50 dBm is excellent, -50 to -60 is good, -60 to -70 is fair, and greater than -70 is weak. If the signal is weak, move the router closer to the lock, install a WiFi extender, or upgrade to a mesh router system.

Use a Google Nest Guest Network

The most common cause with Google Nest mesh routers is band steering, which can make pairing difficult for a Schlage Encode lock.

Open the Google Home app and go to Home, then Wi-Fi, then Devices, then Network settings. Schlage’s own Nest guide starts this path from Favorites, so use whichever of those two tabs your app shows.

Open Guest Network and turn on the guest network. Enter a guest network name and password that are different from your main WiFi network. Tap Save. Retry pairing the Schlage Encode lock to that guest network in Schlage Home.

Reset the Lock Connection

This fixes an Encode Series lock that shows as unreachable or keeps failing after the network settings are correct.

Retract the bolt. Remove the battery cover. Remove the battery tray for 10 seconds. Reinsert the battery tray securely.

Extend the bolt to the locked position. Retract the bolt back to the unlocked position. Log out of Schlage Home. Log back in to Schlage Home.

If the soft reset fails, delete the lock from Schlage Home before a factory reset.

For Encode Series, remove the battery cover, hold the black reset button while the LED flashes red, keep holding until the flashing stops, wait for solid blue, then re-pair the lock. This removes programmed codes and virtual keys.

For Sense Pro, remove the battery cover and hold the blue button for 10 seconds. After the keypad lights and the lock completes its reset sequence, pair it again in Schlage Home. You can also pair the lock directly to Apple Home, but that route needs an Apple Home hub that supports Matter over Thread, with your iPhone and the hub on the same WiFi network. Either way, the reset removes programmed codes and virtual keys.

Update Firmware and Skip Old Adapter Advice

This applies when setup works partly, the lock appears in the app, or the WiFi problem returns after the basic fixes. Firmware updates can be started from the lock or from Schlage Home.

For Encode Series, press the interior button 5 times rapidly for a manual lock-only update. In Schlage Home, open the lock, tap the three dots, go to Lock Settings, then Firmware Settings, and tap Update Now.

For Sense Pro, remove the battery cover and press the blue button 5 times rapidly. You can also open Firmware Settings in Schlage Home and choose Update over Bluetooth or Update over Wi-Fi.

Older Schlage Sense BE479 and BR400 Wi-Fi Adapter steps belong to a discontinued lock and adapter. Encode models have built-in WiFi, and Schlage Connect is not a direct WiFi lock; pair Schlage Connect through a compatible Z-Wave or Zigbee hub instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Schlage lock not showing any WiFi networks?

Use a 2.4GHz network, stand within Bluetooth range, and check whether the network is hidden. For a hidden network, use Other Network in the Schlage Home WiFi setup and enter the SSID manually.

Does Schlage Encode need a WiFi adapter?

No. Schlage Encode models use built-in WiFi. Adapter steps apply to the discontinued Schlage Sense BE479 with the BR400 Wi-Fi Adapter, not current Encode setup.

What internet speed does a Schlage Encode lock need?

For Encode Series locks showing Unreachable, Schlage says the home WiFi network should have internet connectivity and at least 1 Mbps speed.

Will uninstalling the Schlage Home app delete my locks?

No. Schlage says uninstalling the Schlage Home app does not affect paired locks or their settings. Save your username and password before reinstalling.
