Your Nintendo Switch won't turn on, and you're stuck staring at a blank screen. Start with charging and a power reset, then check the equipment if it still won't respond. These fixes cover Switch, Switch Lite, OLED, and Switch 2, with model differences called out below.
Give a depleted battery time to charge
A depleted battery leaves the screen blank except for a battery symbol that briefly appears. Remove the console from its dock, if docked. Connect an undamaged Nintendo AC adapter appropriate to your model directly to the console and a wall outlet.
Leave it charging for 15–30 minutes, even if the battery symbol disappears. Press POWER once after that charging time.
Check whether the console is asleep
Press the console's POWER button once to wake it. The HOME button also wakes a sleeping Switch when used with a supported controller.
On Switch 2, original Joy-Con and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller cannot wake the console with HOME, even though they support compatible gameplay. Use POWER on the console itself.
If the console responds, hold POWER for at least three seconds to open its power menu. Select Power Options > Restart. If neither the screen nor the power menu responds, move on to the forced shutdown.
Reset the adapter and force a shutdown
This resets the charging adapter and shuts down an unresponsive console. Remove the console from its dock, if docked. Disconnect the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the console or dock.
Leave the adapter disconnected for 30 seconds. Hold the console's POWER button for 20 seconds. Release POWER.
Plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet. Connect the adapter directly to the console. Press POWER once.
Rule out the charger and outlet
A damaged or incompatible adapter is a charging problem to rule out when the console stays blank.
For Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED, check that your Nintendo Switch AC adapter is model HAC-002. Inspect its cable and connectors for damage. Replace damaged or incompatible charging equipment.
For these original Switch models, try a different wall outlet with the adapter connected directly to the undocked console. If only the charging symbol appears, leave it charging for at least 30 minutes. Press POWER again after that wait.
For Switch 2, use an undamaged NGN-01 adapter and USB-C cable. The original HAC-002 adapter charges Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power charging or TV mode through the Switch 2 dock.
Test another Nintendo Switch adapter for the original models, or another compatible adapter for Switch 2. To check your adapter with another device, connect it to a compatible Nintendo USB-C accessory, such as the appropriate Pro Controller. Check whether the accessory charges. If it does, troubleshooting turns toward the console.
Test whether only the screen is black
A docked console normally turns off its own screen. These consoles also have no power indicator light, so neither observation alone means your Switch has failed.
For Switch or OLED, test TV output with an official HAC-007 or HEG-007 dock connected to its adapter, a wall outlet, and the TV's HDMI port. Turn on the TV, then dock the console. Switch Lite does not support this test.
If the TV works but the undocked screen stays blank, update using the working display through HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update and follow the prompts. Arrange service if the console screen still does not work.
If handheld mode works but the TV stays blank, connect dock power directly to the wall using your model's compatible dock and adapter. Connect HDMI directly to the TV, bypassing soundbars or adapters. Select the TV input that matches the connected HDMI port.
Clear a freeze before trying again
A frozen console stops responding to its buttons and needs a forced shutdown. For Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED that remains unresponsive after the power steps, remove it from the dock where applicable. Attach the Joy-Con on Switch or OLED.
Hold POWER for at least 20 seconds to shut the console down. With the power off, eject the game card by pressing it inward until it clicks, then withdrawing it. Remove the microSD card the same way.
Its slot is behind the stand on Switch and OLED, or under its cover on Switch Lite. Press POWER to restart the console.
For a frozen Switch 2, remove it from the dock. Attach Joy-Con 2. Hold POWER for at least 20 seconds to shut it down.
Remove any game card while the console is powered off. Remove any microSD Express card while the console is powered off. Press POWER to restart it.
Once either console's interface works again, open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. Follow the update prompts. Card removal addresses freezing or unresponsiveness; updating requires sufficient power and a working interface.
Inspect the charging port before repair
Inspect the bottom USB-C charging port on Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED for physical damage. A damaged port needs Nintendo service.
On Switch 2, move the charger from the bottom USB-C port to the top port, or vice versa. If only one port works, arrange console service.
If neither port works, or direct charging, the forced shutdown, and another adapter still fail to restore operation, request Nintendo service. For Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED, include the adapter so Nintendo can test it with the console.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Nintendo instructions give different POWER button timings?
Nintendo's U.S. no-power instructions specify 20 seconds. Its UK Switch blank-screen instructions specify 30 seconds, while its Maintenance Mode instructions use 12 seconds for a forced shutdown. Use the 20-second timing for the no-power reset above.
Can I replace the Switch battery myself?
Nintendo says consumers should not replace the console battery themselves. Contact Nintendo customer service if the battery needs replacement.
Can I update if the normal HOME Menu will not open?
On Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED, Maintenance Mode offers an update option if the console reaches that screen. With the console powered off, hold both volume buttons. Press POWER while continuing to hold the volume buttons until Maintenance Mode appears. Select Update System and follow the prompts. Enter your Parental Controls PIN if requested.
What should I do if the console is also getting hot?
For Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED, Nintendo specifies an ambient temperature of 5–35°C. Clear vent obstructions and leave at least 10 cm around the intake and exhaust. If you are concerned about the heat, stop using the console and contact Nintendo support.
