A Nintendo Switch dock with no green light can look dead, but that light is not supposed to stay on all the time. A quick flash after connecting power is normal; the TV Output LED stays solid green only when the console is docked and the application screen is showing on the TV. Start with the checks that confirm normal behavior, then move through Nintendo-supported power, HDMI, firmware, Switch 2, and service steps.

Check the dock light before you pull cables

A brief green flash followed by no light is the most common normal behavior when the console is not actively showing its screen on the TV.

Plug the Nintendo Switch AC adapter into the dock and watch the TV Output LED. If you are using Nintendo Switch 2, plug the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter into the Switch 2 dock and check the same light.

Dock the console with the screen facing the same direction as the front panel of the dock.

Turn on the TV and select the correct HDMI input.

The green light should stay on only while the docked console is displaying the application screen on the TV. If it never stays solid green during TV output, keep going.

Reconnect the dock in Nintendo-supported order

This fixes a dock that is connected out of order, missing power, or set to the wrong HDMI input.

Open the back cover of the Nintendo Switch Dock.

Connect the USB-C plug from the Nintendo Switch AC adapter model HAC-002 to the terminal labeled AC ADAPTER.

Plug the other end of the AC adapter into a wall outlet.

Connect the HDMI cable to the terminal labeled HDMI OUT.

Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to an HDMI port on the TV or monitor.

Close the back cover.

Place the console into the dock with the console screen facing the same direction as the front panel of the dock.

Turn on the TV and choose the correct HDMI input.

Restart the console when the dock stays dark

Restarting is one of Nintendo's supported checks when the dock LED is not behaving correctly. Use the normal restart first, then force the console off only when it does not respond.

On Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, hold the POWER Button for three seconds, choose Power Options, then select Restart. If the console does not respond, hold the POWER Button for twelve seconds, then power it on again.

On Nintendo Switch 2, hold the POWER Button for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, then select Restart. If it does not respond, hold the POWER Button for 20 seconds, then turn it back on.

If the dock still has no green light after the restart, update the console and dock firmware next.

Update the console and dock firmware

Start with the console system update. On Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, go to HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update.

For the Nintendo Switch dock with LAN port model HEG-007, install the latest system update first. Then open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Update Dock > Begin Update.

On Nintendo Switch 2, update the console through HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. Keep the console docked and connected to the internet, because Nintendo requires the console to be in the dock to finish the dock firmware update. Then update the Nintendo Switch 2 dock BEE-005 through HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Dock Update > Begin Update. If the dock is already current, a message says so instead.

Inspect the adapter cable and dock

Check the parts that decide whether the dock can power on and pass video.

  1. 1.For Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, check the bottom of the AC adapter where the cord attaches. It should read MOD. HAC-002 near the top of the text.
  2. 2.For Nintendo Switch 2, check that the AC adapter reads MOD. NGN-01 near the top of the text, then inspect the USB-C cable and AC plug.
  3. 3.Look over the AC adapter, HDMI cable, and dock for frayed or split cords, loose connectors, loose USB ports, kinks, or other damage.
  4. 4.Confirm the dock model. Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED use HAC-007 or HEG-007; Nintendo Switch 2 uses BEE-005.
  5. 5.Replace any damaged AC adapter, HDMI cable, or dock with the matching Nintendo-supported accessory.

Tune TV settings when the light works

Once the dock light is solid green but the TV still has no picture or the image looks wrong, adjust the console's TV output settings. On Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, open HOME Menu > System Settings > TV Settings.

Set TV Resolution to Automatic, 480p, 720p, or 1080p. Set RGB Range to Automatic, Full Range, or Limited Range, then use Adjust Screen Size and follow the on-screen prompts while docked.

On Nintendo Switch 2, use HOME Menu > System Settings > Display. Display options include TV Resolution, Dock Output Information, RGB Range, Adjust Screen Size, Match TV Power State, 120 Hz Output, Auto Low-Latency Mode, HDR Output, and Adjust HDR.

Check Nintendo Switch 2 power and HDMI

This fixes Switch 2 TV mode problems caused by the wrong power supply, HDMI cable, blocked ventilation, or a dock that no longer detects the console.

Use the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter model NGN-01, or another compatible AC adapter and cable with at least 54W output.

Check that the HDMI cable is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says that label should be printed on the cable.

Try a different Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the issue continues.

Check that the console and dock are not warm.

Keep the air vents uncovered, remove accessories, stickers, decals, dust, or debris blocking the vents, and place the console and dock in an open, ventilated area away from heat sources.

Remove the Switch 2 from the dock and confirm it powers on.

Reset the AC adapter by unplugging it from the dock and power outlet, then wait 20 seconds.

Plug the AC adapter back into the power outlet and directly into the USB-C port on the bottom of the console to confirm the console is charging.

Connect the AC adapter back to the dock.

Re-dock the console and check that the console screen goes black. If the console screen stays on while docked with TV and power connected, Nintendo says the dock needs service.

Bypass the TV setup and test another dock

Use a direct connection to rule out HDMI accessories before sending anything in for service.

  1. 1.Connect the AC adapter to the dock and directly to a wall outlet.
  2. 2.Connect the HDMI cable to the dock and directly to an HDMI port on the TV.
  3. 3.Remove external devices while troubleshooting, including a sound bar, home theater system, HDMI splitter, or DVI adapter.
  4. 4.Try a different HDMI port on the TV and a different HDMI cable.
  5. 5.Test the console with another compatible dock if possible. If the second dock fixes the issue, only the problematic dock needs service.

Start Nintendo service when fixes fail

If the dock still will not work after the supported troubleshooting path, start Nintendo's repair flow from the relevant troubleshooting page. Select Start a service request, create or log in to your Nintendo Account for the best experience, and enter the system serial number when applicable.

Complete the requested product information, acknowledgements, personal information, shipping details, and payment information if needed. Then choose Submit service request.

If the online service request does not work, call Nintendo Consumer Service at 1-800-255-3700 in the US or Canada. For Latin America, contact the closest Nintendo Authorized Service Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the green light stay on when no console is docked?

No. Nintendo says a brief flash followed by the TV Output LED turning off is normal. The light stays solid green only while the console is docked and the application screen is displayed on the TV.

Does this work for Nintendo Switch Lite?

No. Nintendo Switch Lite does not use TV mode with these docks. Nintendo also states the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2 or Switch Lite, and the Switch 2 dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite.

Can I use a third-party charger with a Switch 2 dock?

Nintendo says the Switch 2 dock should use the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter model NGN-01, or another compatible AC adapter and cable with at least 54W output. If the adapter or USB-C cable is damaged, replace it.

What does it mean if another dock works?

Nintendo says that if testing with a second compatible dock resolves the issue, only the problematic dock needs service.
