Your Wi-Fi icon has disappeared, but that doesn't automatically mean your connection is gone. A hidden control, an Ethernet symbol, and a missing wireless adapter call for different fixes. Start with your device's visibility checks below, then move to connection repairs if Wi-Fi itself is unavailable.

Open Wi-Fi directly on Windows 11

This gets you to Wi-Fi when the familiar signal icon is missing. Press Windows+A to open Quick Settings.

Alternatively, select the taskbar's sound, battery, or network area. An Ethernet symbol can take the place of the familiar Wi-Fi signal. Scroll through Quick Settings to find Wi-Fi. Windows 11 version 24H2 and subsequent versions using this layout have a scrollable panel.

Move the Wi-Fi control to an easier-to-reach position. To reconnect, open Manage Wi-Fi connections beside Wi-Fi. This requires a functioning wireless adapter.

Select your network. Choose Connect. Enter the network password.

Select Next. If you need to refresh the available networks, select Refresh network list.

Reveal a hidden Windows taskbar

Move your pointer to the bottom edge of the screen to reveal an automatically hidden taskbar. Right-click the taskbar. Select Taskbar settings.

Expand Taskbar behaviors. Clear Automatically hide the taskbar. On a compatible Windows 11 two-in-one device with a collapsed tablet taskbar, swipe upward from the bottom edge instead.

For a persistently expanded tablet layout, clear Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet in Taskbar settings. Restore the whole bar before changing network settings just to recover its icon.

Let Windows troubleshoot a missing Wi-Fi control

No Wi-Fi control anywhere in Quick Settings? That's the point to try Windows' network troubleshooter.

Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters. Select the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Follow the Get Help prompts.

Windows 10's separate network-icon toggle and the older Quick Settings editing procedure don't apply to the current Windows 11 scrollable layout. Current Windows 11 troubleshooting uses Get Help in place of the retired MSDT tools. If troubleshooting doesn't restore the control, check the wireless switch, adapter, and driver next.

Bring the Windows wireless adapter back

These repairs target a disabled adapter, wireless service trouble, or a driver problem. On a laptop with a physical wireless switch, set it to its on position. Right-click Start. Open Device Manager.

Expand Network adapters. Right-click your wireless adapter. If the adapter is disabled, select Enable device.

If it is already enabled but Wi-Fi remains unavailable, press Windows+R. Type services.msc. Press Enter. Right-click WLAN AutoConfig.

Select Restart. If Wi-Fi is still unavailable, return to Device Manager > Network adapters. Right-click the wireless adapter. Select Update driver.

Choose Search automatically for drivers. If Windows doesn't find a suitable driver, download the matching wireless driver from your computer or adapter manufacturer. Match the adapter, operating system, and architecture.

Back under Update driver, select Browse my computer for drivers. Select Browse.... Choose the downloaded driver's folder. Select OK.

Choose Next to continue installation. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter's Properties > Driver instead.

Select Roll Back Driver. You'll need administrator access and an available previous driver. Choose a reason for rolling back.

Select Yes. Restart when requested.

Save a Windows network reset for persistent failures

Prepare to reconfigure any VPN software after the reset if required. Reserve this last networking-specific repair for unavailable or broken Wi-Fi.

Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Select Reset now. Confirm with Yes.

Restart your computer. A network reset resets adapters and network settings, so finish the narrower repairs first.

Put Wi-Fi back in the Mac menu bar

A Wi-Fi control that isn't selected for display leaves the Mac menu bar without its icon. In macOS Tahoe 26, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Menu Bar. Select Wi-Fi under Menu Bar Controls.

For macOS Sequoia 15, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Control Center instead. Choose Show in Menu Bar from the menu beside Wi-Fi under Control Center Modules.

If the entire menu bar is hidden, move your pointer to the top of the screen. To keep it visible in Tahoe, set Automatically hide and show the menu bar to Never in System Settings > Menu Bar.

If Wi-Fi is also missing from Network settings, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Network. On a Mac with wireless capability, you can recreate the missing service here. Choose Add Service from the Action pop-up menu.

Set Interface to Wi-Fi. Enter a Service Name. Select Create.

Restore iPhone controls and check the connection

This brings back a missing Control Center control and checks whether you're connected. Open Control Center on your iPhone. Inspect its additional groups for Wi-Fi. Expand the connectivity group to see its controls.

To add a missing control, tap the top-left Add button. Tap Add a Control. Select the Wi-Fi or connectivity control offered in the gallery. Drag the control to your preferred position.

To check the connection on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi. Turn on Wi-Fi. Select your network. A blue checkmark beside its name confirms the connection.

Turn off Airplane Mode in Settings if it is enabled. Restart your device if Wi-Fi is grayed out. If Control Center works from the Home Screen but not inside apps, enable Access Within Apps in Settings > Control Center.

Find an Android Wi-Fi tile that's out of view

Use these checks when Wi-Fi is missing from Quick Settings; some Android layouts call the control Internet. Samsung Galaxy devices with separate notification and Quick settings panels need a different swipe.

On Android devices using Google's Quick Settings interface, swipe down twice. Tap Edit. Scroll through the available controls. Tap Add for Wi-Fi or Internet, depending on your device's layout.

Drag the control to a prominent position. If a dot appears in the status-icon area, expand the notification shade to inspect active settings. The dot indicates that icons are hidden to conserve screen space.

On a Samsung Galaxy using the separate-panel layout introduced with One UI 7, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Quick settings. Tap the Edit pencil. Select Edit. Inspect Available buttons, including its additional pages.

Drag the available Wi-Fi control into position, or rearrange the Wi-Fi card if it is out of view. Tap Done. To check a Pixel's connection directly, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.

Turn on Wi-Fi. Select your network. Check for Connected beneath its name.

Use the clock to reach Chromebook Wi-Fi

Select the time at the bottom-right of the screen. Choose Not Connected when your Chromebook is disconnected. Alternatively, open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi from the time panel.

Turn on Wi-Fi. Select a network. If the connection still fails, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. Google documents Diagnostics only on Chromebooks running ChromeOS version 90 and later.

Inspect Connectivity for connection information. For a shortcut to Diagnostics, search for it using the Launcher key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Wi-Fi icon missing on my work computer?

An administrator can hide the Windows networking icon through device management. The sign-in screen's network selector has a separate policy. Ask your IT administrator to review Remove the networking icon for the taskbar or Do not display network selection UI for the sign-in screen.

Does tapping Wi-Fi in iPhone Control Center turn it off completely?

No. Disconnecting through Control Center doesn't completely disable Wi-Fi. Tap the Wi-Fi control again to reconnect. To turn the radio off completely, use Settings > Wi-Fi.

Will resetting iPhone or Pixel network settings erase saved Wi-Fi details?

Yes. On iPhone and iPad, a network reset resets saved Wi-Fi credentials and other network configuration. Pixel's Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi option resets saved wireless configuration. Reserve these resets for problems that remain after narrower fixes.

Why does my Pixel 7a lose Wi-Fi when I enable its hotspot?

Pixel 7a cannot use Wi-Fi and its hotspot simultaneously. Open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Turn off Use Wi-Fi hotspot. Then re-enable Wi-Fi under Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
