Your Chromebook is plugged in, but the screen stays dark or the battery percentage refuses to move. Start with the outlet and charger, then work through charging time, battery settings, and a hardware reset. If charging stops around 80%, jump straight to the charging settings below.

Reconnect the charger and give it time

Check that your wall outlet works.

Make sure the switch on your extension cord is on, if it has one.

Unplug the charger from both the Chromebook and the wall.

Reconnect the charger securely to the Chromebook first.

Plug the adapter back into the wall.

Leave it connected for at least 30 minutes.

Press Power to try starting the Chromebook.

If it still won’t start or charge, check the adapter, cable, and charging port next.

Match the charger and port to your Chromebook

An incompatible adapter, damaged cable, or loose connection interrupts the power your Chromebook needs.

Use the original adapter and cable, or replacements that match your model’s manual. A connector that fits does not establish compatibility, and charging a phone does not prove an adapter supplies enough power for your Chromebook.

Inspect the cable and connections for cuts, breaks, fraying, and looseness.

Have damaged cables replaced.

For a USB-C ASUS Chromebook, check the manual to identify which ports accept charging.

Connect the charger to a supported charging port.

On a Pixelbook (2017) or Pixelbook Go, try the USB-C port on the opposite side. Both sides support charging on these models.

Try another compatible adapter if charging still fails. For ASUS models, match the required voltage and all other adapter specifications in the manual.

On a Samsung Chromebook with no power or charging indicator, check that the original charger is compatible with another device before testing it there.

Test the original charger on that compatible device to help identify an adapter fault.

Give a depleted battery longer to recover

For an ASUS Chromebook with a battery too depleted to start, leave the correct adapter connected for at least one hour before the next startup attempt.

For an HP Chromebook with suspected deep discharge, leave the correct adapter connected for at least 10 minutes, with recovery taking up to 24 hours. A dark charging light does not rule out a small charging current.

Periodically press Power on the HP Chromebook to check for a response. Once it starts, keep the charger connected; an HP Chromebook still unresponsive after 24 hours needs HP service.

For an Acer Chromebook that neither starts nor shows a charging LED, leave the adapter connected for six hours. If the light returns, let charging finish before switching on. If it remains unresponsive, contact Acer.

Remove an intentional 80% charging limit

This lets a supported Chromebook charge fully when its settings pause or cap charging around 80%.

Select the time to open the system menu.

Open Settings.

Navigate to System preferences > Power.

Turn off Optimized charging for consistent charging to full. Adaptive charging pauses charging around 80% when active, while Charge limit caps it at 80%.

For a one-time override instead, select Fully charge now in the Adaptive charging notification. That option overrides an adaptive pause; it does not override Charge limit. Setting availability depends on hardware and administrator policy.

Try a restart, then reset the hardware

If the Chromebook responds, select the time > Power > Restart first; if charging still fails, follow the hardware-reset steps.

  1. 1.Back up important files in Downloads if the Chromebook still runs. A hardware reset carries a risk of deleting some files.
  2. 2.Turn off the Chromebook using the time > Power > Shut down, or hold the Power key for three seconds.
  3. 3.On most Chromebook laptops, hold Refresh and tap Power. On a Chromebook tablet, hold Volume Up and Power together for at least 10 seconds instead.
  4. 4.On a laptop, release Refresh when startup begins. On a tablet, release both buttons after the 10-second hold.
  5. 5.Reconnect the charger to check whether charging resumes.

Reduce power use during slow charging

Heavy use consumes incoming power, leaving less available to charge the battery.

Shut down the Chromebook through the time > Power > Shut down while it charges. Acer recommends charging with the device switched off to accelerate charging.

Disconnect accessories that draw power. For an ASUS Chromebook that also won’t start, remove USB devices, memory cards, and other peripherals.

Press Power to try starting the ASUS Chromebook without its accessories.

If it starts, reconnect one accessory.

Restart through the time > Power > Restart after that connection. Repeat this one-accessory check to identify the problematic device.

Close unused browser tabs when you resume using the Chromebook. Reducing browser load leaves more power available for charging; it does not repair a failed charging circuit.

For Acer Chromebooks covered by its care guidance, let the device return to a temperature between 32°F and 95°F before retrying. Acer advises against charging outside that range. Follow your manufacturer’s temperature specifications for other models.

Run battery diagnostics and check for updates

Use diagnostics when the Chromebook still runs but charging trouble persists. The results help identify battery faults and give support useful information.

Open the time > Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. The built-in app requires ChromeOS 90 or later.

Review battery health, cycle count, and current.

On an HP Chromebook with enough remaining battery power, disconnect AC power before running the discharge test.

Select Run Discharge test under Battery.

Allow approximately 10 to 15 minutes for the test.

Select Save session log to retain the results for support.

Once adequate power is available, connect to Wi-Fi.

Open the time > Settings > About ChromeOS.

Select Check for updates to download available updates.

Select Restart when prompted. Updates apply to eligible Chromebooks, with schedules controlled by administrators on managed devices. Software updates do not repair a defective battery or charging circuit.

Arrange a repair if charging still fails

Inspect the charging connector for physical damage or oxidation.

Contact HP for replacement of the affected part or unit if your HP Chromebook’s connector is damaged.

For persistent charging failure after the compatible-charger checks, charging time, and hardware reset, select your brand in Google’s Chromebook manufacturer directory.

Request an assessment of the adapter, battery, charging port, and charging circuitry.

Share any saved battery diagnostic results with support.

Follow the manufacturer’s repair procedure for your exact model.

Keep your model details handy, since charging hardware and recovery requirements differ between Chromebooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my brand-new Chromebook start?

Battery shipping mode is one explanation. On a new HP Chromebook, a blinking white LED near the power connector is a shipping-mode indicator. Switch it off, connect the adapter, and charge for at least 30 minutes before starting it. For a new ASUS Chromebook in shipping mode, switch it off, connect its AC adapter, then switch it on again.

Can I use a phone charger to revive my Chromebook?

Match the charger to your Chromebook’s specifications. Google documents a specific revival procedure for Pixelbook (2017) and Pixelbook Go: if the charging LED blinks red and the original charger has not revived the device after several minutes, connect an older USB phone charger or another computer’s USB 2.0 port for one hour. This procedure applies to those Pixelbook models.

Why does my Acer Chromebook report a full battery and then shut down?

Acer documents a false-percentage symptom after deep discharge. For a Chromebook exhibiting that symptom, leave the adapter connected for approximately 30 minutes until the reading changes to about 1%, then continue charging to 100%. This procedure is specific to that symptom.

How can an administrator remove a school Chromebook’s charging limit?

Ask the administrator to open Admin console > Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device settings and select the device’s organizational unit. Under Battery charging optimization, they can choose Enforce standard charging or Allow the user to decide, then select Save. This applies to managed devices supporting that policy.
