A Chromebook stuck on the Chrome screen usually needs a clean restart, a hardware reset, or ChromeOS recovery. Start with the quick fixes that do not erase the device, then move to Powerwash or recovery only when the logo screen keeps returning.

Here are the current supported paths from Google and manufacturer documentation, ordered from simplest to most involved.

Restart the Chromebook Completely

A simple boot freeze is the most common cause to rule out first.

Hold Power until the Chromebook turns off.

Press Power again to turn it back on.

If the Chromebook reaches ChromeOS, use the status area or power controls to shut it down normally, then turn it on again.

Unplug Everything Attached

Use this when the Chromebook still stops at the Chrome logo. It also applies when recovery says Please remove all connected devices and start recovery.

Turn the Chromebook off.

Disconnect any mouse, external hard drive, USB device, SD card, dock, or adapter.

Turn the Chromebook on again with only the built-in hardware attached.

Use the Keyboard Hard Reset

Turn off the Chromebook.

Press and hold Refresh, then tap Power. When the Chromebook starts up, release Refresh.

If that shortcut does not respond, press and hold Back, Refresh, and Power for at least 10 seconds.

A hard reset is not a Powerwash. Google says it may delete some files in Downloads.

Run the Right Hardware Reset

Use the hardware reset path that matches the device type.

  1. 1.On a Chromebook tablet or detachable without a keyboard, hold Volume Up and Power for at least 10 seconds, then release both.
  2. 2.On an Acer Chromebox, ASUS Chromebox, LG Chromebase, or Samsung Chromebox, turn it off, remove the power cable, then plug it back in. Another brand of Chromebox or Chromebase can use a different hardware reset, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for that model.
  3. 3.On a Chromebit, turn it off, remove the power adapter, wait several seconds, reconnect the power adapter, then turn it on.

Powerwash When You Reach Sign In

A ChromeOS state that needs a reset is the most common cause once the Chromebook reaches sign-in but still keeps failing afterward.

At the sign-in screen, hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R, then select Restart.

In the box that appears, select Powerwash, then choose Continue. Follow the on-screen steps and sign in with your Google Account.

If you can open ChromeOS, select the bottom-right Status Bar, open Settings, expand Advanced, select Reset settings, and under Powerwash click Reset.

After the restart, select Powerwash, choose Continue, then complete setup.

Start Internet Recovery

Turn off the Chromebook.

Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power.

Let go of Power.

When a message appears on screen, release the other keys.

Select Recover using internet connection and follow the on-screen instructions.

Use the physical recovery button instead on a Chromebox that requires it.

If Recover using internet connection is missing, use USB recovery next.

ChromeOS recovery erases local data, so use it after the restart and reset options fail.

Reinstall ChromeOS From USB Recovery Media

This applies when Internet recovery is unavailable or fails and the Chromebook still supports recovery. Google notes that updates may not be supported on older Chromebooks, and recovery is not possible on those devices. It is also the supported route when the Chromebook can enter recovery mode but still cannot start ChromeOS.

On a working Chromebook, Windows PC, or Mac with Chrome installed, install Chromebook Recovery Utility from the Chrome Web Store.

Open Chrome, open Extensions, then open Chromebook Recovery Utility.

Select Get started.

Choose Select a model from a list, or type the model number shown at the bottom of the recovery error screen.

Select Continue, insert an 8 GB or larger USB drive or SD card that can be erased, choose the drive, select Continue, then select Create now.

When the recovery media is ready, remove it from the working computer.

On the stuck Chromebook, enter recovery mode, insert the USB drive or SD card, and follow the on-screen instructions. ChromeOS recovery permanently erases local data.

If recovery media fails, erase it in Chromebook Recovery Utility through Settings, Erase recovery media, the USB drive or SD card, Continue, and Erase now. Create the recovery media again, then try a different USB flash drive or SD card if the error returns.

Clean Up After It Boots

Once the Chromebook gets past the Chrome screen, update ChromeOS and remove recent extensions or apps if the problem was intermittent or started after those changes.

  1. 1.Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. 2.Select the bottom-right time, open Settings, choose About ChromeOS, then select Check for updates under Google ChromeOS.
  3. 3.Restart when ChromeOS asks for it.
  4. 4.Open Chrome, choose More, More tools, and Extensions, then turn off recently added extensions.
  5. 5.To remove an extension, select Remove, then confirm Remove.
  6. 6.Open Launcher, right-click a recently added app, select Uninstall or Remove from Chrome, then select Uninstall.

Check Work or School Chromebook Limits

For a school or employer managed Chromebook, some reset options behave differently from a personal Chromebook.

An administrator can block user-triggered Powerwash, reset the device remotely from Google Admin console, or require the Chromebook to re-enroll after a wipe.

A personal Google Account cannot perform those administrator actions.

If the Chromebook is managed and still gets stuck on the Chrome screen after reset or re-enrollment, retry recovery with all accessories removed or ask the organization that manages it to handle the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a hard reset erase my Chromebook?

A hard reset is not a full Powerwash, but Google says it may delete some files in Downloads.

Can I recover a Chromebook without a USB drive?

Yes, when the recovery screen offers Recover using internet connection. If that option is not shown or does not work, create USB or SD recovery media.

Should I press Ctrl+D on the recovery screen?

No for normal recovery. Ctrl+D is for Developer mode or a manual wipe flow; when the screen says ChromeOS verification is turned off, press Space Bar to recover instead.

Why is Powerwash missing on my school Chromebook?

On managed work or school Chromebooks, an administrator can block user-triggered Powerwash and require re-enrollment after a wipe.
