Steam Big Picture Mode is built for a controller-first, TV-style setup, which can feel clumsy when you just want the normal desktop client back. Start with Steam's own exit command, then use the shortcut or startup fixes if Steam keeps returning to the same screen.
Use the Big Picture menu
Move to the lower-left corner of Big Picture Mode and select Menu.
Select Power, then choose Exit Big Picture Mode. Steam returns to the regular desktop client.
If the menu will not respond or you cannot reach it easily, use ALT + ENTER next.
Press the keyboard shortcut
With Steam Big Picture Mode focused, press ALT + ENTER. Steam uses this shortcut to move into and out of Big Picture fullscreen, and it also works as a hotkey for leaving Big Picture Mode.
Use it when the mouse is awkward, the interface is stuck in fullscreen, or you want the fastest desktop fix. It applies to desktop Steam on Windows, macOS, and Linux when a keyboard is available.
Exit with a supported controller
Use the controller to select Menu in the lower-left corner.
Select Power.
Choose Exit Big Picture Mode to return to desktop Steam.
Use an officially supported Steam Controller, Microsoft Xbox controller, Sony DualShock 4, Sony DualSense, or Nintendo Switch Pro controller for the cleanest path.
Stop Steam from opening there again
Change the startup setting once you are back in the desktop Steam client.
- 1.Open the desktop Steam client.
- 2.Select Steam, then choose Settings.
- 3.Open Interface.
- 4.Turn off Start Steam in Big Picture Mode.
- 5.Exit Steam completely, then launch Steam again.
Remove the forced launch flag
This fixes Steam when a shortcut, launcher, script, or startup item is forcing Big Picture Mode.
Close Steam completely.
Open the shortcut, launcher, script, or startup item that starts Steam.
Remove -gamepadui from the Steam command line.
Start Steam normally again.
Check the launch path when the setting does not stick
The most common cause is that Steam is still being started by a launcher or script that includes -gamepadui.
Check the exact shortcut, launcher, script, or startup item you use to open Steam. Remove -gamepadui if it appears there, then restart Steam.
On some SteamOS Stable setups in Desktop Mode, Start Steam in Big Picture Mode can be ignored, so the launch path still needs to be checked.
Switch out of the Steam Deck gaming UI
On Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or SteamOS gaming UI, use the system power menu instead.
- 1.Open the STEAM menu.
- 2.Select Power.
- 3.Choose Switch to Desktop.
Skip older top-right power icon instructions
Ignore guides that send you to a top-right power icon first.
Steam's current Big Picture path is Menu, then Power, then Exit Big Picture Mode from the lower-left menu.
Use the top-right power icon only when your screen clearly shows the older Big Picture layout.
Frequently Asked Questions

Press ALT + ENTER while Big Picture Mode is focused. If you prefer the on-screen path, select Menu, then Power, then Exit Big Picture Mode.
Why does Steam keep opening in Big Picture Mode?
Steam can reopen there when Start Steam in Big Picture Mode is enabled or when the launcher uses the -gamepadui command-line flag.
Can I exit Big Picture Mode with a controller?
Yes. Use the controller to open Menu in the lower-left corner, select Power, then choose Exit Big Picture Mode.
