Your phone and Bluetooth headphones change volume together, and you want separate control. To disable absolute Bluetooth volume on Android, turn on Disable absolute volume in Developer options. For supported Xiaomi and Huawei combinations, use the accessory settings below instead.
Turn on Disable absolute volume
Start here if your Android phone exposes the system absolute-volume control. The wording is easy to misread: turning this switch on disables volume synchronization.
Open Settings.
Go to System > Developer options. If the menu is hidden, reveal it using the next section.
Turn Disable absolute volume on.
Keep the Developer options master switch enabled. Android documents absolute volume for Android 6.0 and higher; availability and behavior depend on the manufacturer’s software and the Bluetooth accessory.
Reveal the hidden Developer options menu
On a Google Pixel, open Settings > About phone, where you’ll find Build number.
On a Samsung Galaxy S8 or later, open Settings > About phone > Software information, where you’ll find Build number.
Tap Build number seven times to reveal Developer options.
Turn on Disable absolute volume in Developer options if your phone includes that control. Revealing the menu does not establish that every Galaxy model or software version includes it.
Check playback when Xiaomi’s switch is grayed out
Xiaomi lists active media playback and background audio decoding as causes of a grayed-out Absolute volume switch.
Pause playback before changing the setting.
Return to Absolute volume using the matching Xiaomi accessory path in the next section.
Turn Absolute volume off once the control is usable. Xiaomi also says some phone and accessory combinations do not offer this switch, so its absence alone does not mean you missed a step.
Use the Xiaomi Buds accessory setting
For Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro and Xiaomi Buds 5, use the matching path below on a phone that exposes the menu. These switches use positive wording: Absolute volume must be off to disable synchronization.
For Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro, connect the buds to your Xiaomi or REDMI phone.
Open Settings > Bluetooth.
Tap the > control beside Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro.
Turn Absolute volume off.
For Xiaomi Buds 5, open Settings > Bluetooth > Xiaomi Buds 5 > Audio.
Turn Absolute volume off. Xiaomi does not specify supported phone models or HyperOS versions for this Buds 5 menu.
Switch off volume sync on Huawei
Connect your compatible Bluetooth accessory to your Huawei phone or tablet running EMUI 12.0 or later.
Open Settings > Bluetooth.
Tap the settings icon beside the accessory’s name.
Turn Sync volume with phone off.
Check the connected device’s settings, since this switch applies to that accessory and is absent for unsupported earphones.
Check restrictions when no control matches
There is no universal menu path across Android manufacturers, software versions, and accessories. A missing Disable absolute volume switch does not establish that your phone has an equivalent setting elsewhere.
If organizational policy blocks Developer options on a work or managed phone, ask your administrator to review access. Removing that restriction does not itself disable absolute volume.
Disabling absolute volume changes how the phone and accessory synchronize their volume controls. It does not guarantee louder headphones or provide a bypass for hearing-safety limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to download an app to disable absolute volume?
No. These methods use your phone’s built-in settings and require no software download.
Can I disable absolute volume with my headphones’ volume buttons?
No. Hardware volume controls adjust listening levels; they do not switch off absolute volume.
Why do older Samsung instructions mention Media volume sync?
Samsung places that Bluetooth Advanced interface under One UI 1 and earlier, or Android 9 and below. Those instructions describe older Galaxy software and do not establish a path for current One UI versions.
