Your 8BitDo controller needs the right operating mode before it can connect to your Mac. The confusing part is that different models use different switches and button combinations. Find your model below, follow its setup, and finish the connection over Bluetooth or a supported USB cable.
Pair a Pro 2, SN30 Pro or Lite controller
For a Pro 2, Lite 2 or Lite SE Bluetooth, set the mode switch to D. This section requires macOS 13.2 or later and covers the Bluetooth models, excluding separate wired or Xbox editions.
On the Pro 2, press Start. On the Lite 2 or Lite SE, press Home instead. For an SN30 Pro or SN30 Pro+, hold B + Start with the controller powered off. For an N30 Pro 2, hold B + Start.
Hold your controller’s Pair button for three seconds. On your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. Turn on Bluetooth.
Hover over your controller’s name: 8BitDo Pro 2, 8BitDo SN30 Pro, 8BitDo SN30 Pro+, 8BitDo N30 Pro 2, 8BitDo Lite 2 or 8BitDo Lite SE. Click Connect. Steady lights on the Pro 2 confirm its connection.
Tip: Keep the controller in the same operating mode when you turn it on next time.
Connect a Pro 3 or Ultimate 2 Wireless
These settings enable Bluetooth pairing for both models on macOS Tahoe 26.
For the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad, set the mode switch to D. Press Start on the Pro 3. Hold its Pair button for three seconds, until the status lights move side to side.
For the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, set the mode switch to BT. Check the model name here: Ultimate 2 Wireless and Ultimate 2 Bluetooth are different controllers. Press Home on the Ultimate 2 Wireless. Hold its Pair button for three seconds, until the status light flashes rapidly.
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth on your Mac. Enable Bluetooth. Hover over 8BitDo Pro 3 or 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless. Click Connect.
Choose the right mode for M30, Zero 2 and Micro
M30 Bluetooth and Zero 2 support macOS, but 8BitDo does not name a current macOS release in their FAQs. Micro connects as a keyboard, so its setup serves a different purpose.
For the M30 Bluetooth, hold A + Start to power it on in macOS mode. This applies only to the Bluetooth model, excluding M30 2.4G and M30 Wired Controller for Xbox. Hold the M30’s Pair button for two seconds.
For Zero 2, press A + Start. Hold Select for three seconds, until the blue light flashes rapidly.
For Micro, set the switch to K. Press Home on Micro. Hold its Pair button for one second.
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. Turn on Bluetooth. Hover over Wireless Controller for M30 or Zero 2, or 8BitDo Micro gamepad for Micro. Click Connect.
With Micro, use keyboard bindings in your game or app. Despite its Bluetooth name, it supplies keyboard input on a Mac.
If pairing fails, remove the saved pairing using the troubleshooting steps below, then repeat your model’s button sequence.
Set up the Ultimate 2.4G over Bluetooth
The Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller supports Bluetooth on macOS 13.2 or later with compatible firmware; its bundled receiver is unsupported on Apple devices.
- 1.With the controller in D mode, install compatible current firmware using the official updater steps under “Restore a controller that will not connect” below. Firmware 2.00 introduced D-input Bluetooth.
- 2.Set the switch to D and press Home.
- 3.If the controller is not in Bluetooth mode, hold Profile for five seconds. One vibration identifies Bluetooth mode.
- 4.Hold Star for three seconds.
- 5.Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and enable Bluetooth.
- 6.Hover over 8BitDo Ultimate wireless and click Connect.
Use a USB cable for a supported wired connection
A direct USB connection skips Bluetooth pairing on supported models.
For a Pro 2 Bluetooth, Ultimate 2.4G, Lite 2 or Lite SE Bluetooth, set the switch to D. These models require macOS 13.2 or later. For a Pro 3 Bluetooth, set the switch to D. It requires macOS 26.
For an SN30 Pro Bluetooth, SN30 Pro+ or N30 Pro 2, hold B + Start. These connections require macOS 13.2 or later. For M30 Bluetooth, hold A + Start instead.
For Micro, set the switch to K. It supplies keyboard input over USB too.
Unlock your Mac before connecting the controller. Connect the controller itself directly to your Mac with a USB data cable. 8BitDo documents these Apple wired connections only for Macs with USB-C ports.
Zero 2’s USB port supports charging and firmware updates only. SN30 Pro for Android does not support wired Apple connections, and Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox supports Apple connections over Bluetooth only.
On an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, click Allow when the accessory approval prompt appears. Charging alone does not confirm that data access was allowed. If you previously denied approval, reconnect the cable to trigger the prompt again. Wait for the Mac to recognize the controller.
Restore a controller that will not connect
The wrong operating mode blocks the matching connection procedure, so start with your controller’s switch or startup buttons. Return the controller to the switch position or button combination specified for its exact model above.
For current Apple setup, use D on Pro 2 or B + Start on SN30 Pro Bluetooth, then pair as 8BitDo Pro 2 or 8BitDo SN30 Pro. 8BitDo also still publishes older dedicated macOS-mode instructions for both controllers: set the Pro 2 switch to A, or power on the SN30 Pro with A + Start, and pair as Wireless Controller.
The vendor marks neither path as retired, so start with the Apple instructions above and fall back to the older macOS mode if your controller never appears in the Bluetooth list. For an already paired controller, turn it on in its previously paired mode. On Pro 2, M30 Bluetooth and Zero 2, press Start to power on and reconnect.
Open Control Center > Bluetooth. Select your controller.
If it still will not connect, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. Control-click the controller’s name. Choose Forget to remove its saved pairing.
Put the controller back into its model-specific pairing mode. Hover over its name in Bluetooth settings. Click Connect.
If the problem continues, install available macOS updates. Apple recommends current system and controller software when troubleshooting.
For controller firmware, open 8BitDo’s official Upgrade tool download page. Choose macOS Download. Launch the updater. Connect your supported controller.
Follow the updater’s instructions for the detected model, including manual upgrade-mode entry for older or discontinued models that require it. If connection problems persist, disconnect other Bluetooth devices to reduce the number connected to your Mac.
Adjust the controls after connecting
Use macOS settings for supported gamepads on Ventura 13 or later, or the mobile app for Micro’s keyboard assignments.
- 1.For a supported gamepad, open Apple menu > System Settings > Game Controllers.
- 2.Select your connected controller.
- 3.Configure the available button actions and share gestures. Options vary by controller, and pairing does not guarantee support in every game. Game and app controller settings also vary.
- 4.For Micro, open 8BitDo Ultimate Software on an iPhone or Android device with the controller in Keyboard mode. Use Button Mapping to assign keys or combinations.
- 5.Select a profile for Micro.
- 6.Synchronize the profile to Micro, then connect it to your Mac. Micro stores one profile; configuration over USB is unsupported.
