If your PlayStation password is old, shared, or blocking sign-in, change or reset the account password itself. You can do it online, from PS5, from PS4, or through recovery when you cannot sign in. Use the method that matches where you still have access.

Change your PlayStation password online

This fixes the standard PlayStation password change when you can still sign in. Sign in to Account Management in a web browser, then open Security. Select Edit next to Password.

Enter your new password in the password fields. Select Save.

Update it on PS5 while signed in

Use this method when your PS5 is already signed in to the account. It changes the PlayStation account password, so the new password applies beyond that console. Open Settings and choose Users and Accounts.

Select Account, then open Security. Open Security again and choose Password. Enter and confirm the new password, then select Continue.

Change it from a PS4

Open Settings, then go to Account Management. Select Account Information and enter your current password when prompted. Open Security and choose Password.

Create and confirm the new password, then select Continue. Use the online reset method if you no longer know the current password.

Reset a forgotten password online

The most common cause here is simple: you cannot use the normal password-change screen because you are not signed in. Go to the Account Management sign-in page and select Trouble Signing in?. Choose Recover Your Account.

Follow the on-screen instructions. Open the secure email link from Sony and create a new password.

Reset it from a console sign-in screen

Use this when you are already at a console sign-in screen and need to start recovery there. PS5 and PS4 both route you through the on-screen reset flow. On PS5, open Settings and go to Users and Accounts.

Choose Account, then select Sign In. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the password.

On PS4, open Settings and go to Account Management. Select Sign In, then follow the on-screen instructions from the sign-in flow. If the console reset fails, use PlayStation Support account recovery.

Reset a child account password

This fixes password recovery for a child account in PlayStation Family Management, and only the family manager can do it. Online, sign in to Account Management as the family manager. Open Family Management and choose the child account. Select Reset Password.

On PS5, open Settings and go to Family and Parental Controls. Open Family Management and select the child account. Choose Reset Password.

On PS4, open Settings and go to Parental Controls/Family Management. Open Family Management and select the child account. Choose Reset Password.

Switch back from passkey sign-in

The most common cause is passkey sign-in replacing password sign-in on the account. Sign in to Account Management and open Security. Turn off Sign in with Passkey.

Select Create a password. Use the new password after passkey sign-in is disabled.

Generate a Device Setup Password for PS3 or PS Vita

Sign in to Account Management in a web browser and select Generate New Password. Use that Device Setup Password to sign in on your PlayStation 3 console or PlayStation Vita system.

To replace one, return to Account Management. Select Revoke next to the existing Device Setup Password, then choose Generate New Password. This changes the device-specific sign-in password for PS3 or PS Vita, not your main PlayStation account password.

Contact PlayStation Support when recovery is blocked

Use this route when you cannot change or reset the password normally, you do not have access to the email account, you suspect account compromise, or two-step verification is stopping sign-in. Go to PlayStation Support and choose Account & Security.

Select Password reset & Recover my account. Start PlayStation Assistant by selecting the bot button in the bottom-right corner of the page. Continue through the support chat to recover the account.

Can I change my PlayStation password if I forgot the old one?

Yes. Use Trouble Signing in?, choose Recover Your Account, and create a new password from the secure email link.

Can a family manager reset a child account password?

Yes. The family manager can reset it through Family Management online, on PS5, or on PS4.

Is a PS3 or PS Vita Device Setup Password the same as my main password?

No. It is a device-specific sign-in password for PS3 and PS Vita. It does not change your main PlayStation account password.
