Trying to change your Windows 11 taskbar color but finding the setting unavailable? Light Windows mode blocks taskbar accent colors. Switch the Windows appearance to Dark, choose your color, and turn on the taskbar accent setting. You can keep your apps light, too.
Enable color on the taskbar
Light Windows mode blocks the setting that applies an accent color to your taskbar. Open Settings > Personalization > Colors. Set Choose your mode to Dark.
Change Accent color to Manual. Select a swatch under Recent colors or Windows colors. Turn on Show accent color on Start and taskbar. Your chosen accent applies to both the Start menu and the taskbar.
Pick a custom shade
Return to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Set Accent color to Manual. Select View colors.
Choose your custom shade in the color picker. Keep Show accent color on Start and taskbar turned on. The Windows appearance must stay set to Dark for your custom taskbar accent to work.
Match the taskbar to your wallpaper
Windows can choose an accent from your wallpaper, saving you from picking a shade yourself. Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
Set Accent color to Automatic. Keep Choose your mode set to Dark. Enable Show accent color on Start and taskbar.
If the automatic shade does not give you the result you want, switch Accent color back to Manual. For a better match, select a preset under Windows colors or a custom shade through View colors.
Keep your apps light
Choosing Dark under Choose your mode changes the default app appearance along with the Windows appearance. Open Settings > Personalization > Colors. Set Choose your mode to Custom.
Set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark. Set Choose your default app mode to Light. Some apps have their own light or dark setting that is separate from this default, and not all apps support dark mode. Keep Show accent color on Start and taskbar enabled to retain your selected taskbar color.
Restore the standard light or dark taskbar
Use these settings to return to the standard appearance.
- 1.Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- 2.Set Choose your mode to Light for the standard light appearance, or Dark for the dark appearance.
- 3.If you chose Dark, turn off Show accent color on Start and taskbar to remove the accent from both surfaces.
Reduce background blending
Turning off transparency makes the taskbar more opaque without changing your selected accent. Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Turn off Transparency effects. To restore the blended appearance, turn Transparency effects back on.
Check what is overriding your chosen color
Check for an active contrast theme or a taskbar customization app when Windows color settings do not produce the expected result. Contrast themes change the broader interface palette, while customization apps have their own taskbar appearance controls.
To remove an active contrast theme, open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes. Keep your contrast theme if you rely on it for readability. Select None. Choose Apply to restore ordinary colors across the interface.
If you use a taskbar customization app and want to return to Windows controls, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Open More beside the customization app. Select Uninstall.
Follow the app's uninstaller. Removing the app removes the app and its own taskbar appearance controls; it does not select a new Windows color for you. Return to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Set Choose your mode to Dark.
Set Accent color to Manual. Select your preferred swatch under Recent colors or Windows colors. Turn on Show accent color on Start and taskbar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Windows 11 Pro to change the taskbar color?
No. The built-in accent-color controls work in Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education.
Why doesn't changing my browser theme change the taskbar?
Browser themes control the browser's appearance. They do not independently recolor the Windows taskbar, and neither do app-specific dark-mode settings.
Will applying a Windows theme always change the taskbar color?
No. A wallpaper-only theme does not necessarily change the taskbar. Taskbar coloring depends on the theme's Windows mode and accent settings.
