In a recent development, a Google app update has been discovered to be causing battery drain and overheating problems on Google Pixel phones. However, Google has now confirmed that a fix is being rolled out to address the issue.

According to a statement provided to 9to5Google, Google acknowledged that a "backend change" in the Google app was responsible for the battery drain experienced on a "subset of Android devices." The impact of the battery drain was specifically observed on Pixel devices, which led the community to attribute it to the latest versions of the Google app and the May 2023 update that was released earlier this month for Pixel phones.

The good news is that Google has announced the deployment of a fix for the problem. Importantly, this fix does not require any app or system updates. Instead, it is a server-side update that is expected to resolve the issue immediately.

Google stated:

"A recent Google App backend change unintentionally resulted in a subset of Android devices experiencing accelerated battery drain. We rolled out a fix shortly after becoming aware of the issue, and impacted users should see their devices return to normal behavior immediately. This fix does not require an app update."

Affected users, particularly those with Pixel 6 or 7 series devices, reported a significant impact on battery life, with some claiming their battery life was effectively halved.

If you have experienced this issue, please share your feedback in the comments section regarding any improvements you notice in the coming days.

It is reassuring to know that Google has promptly addressed the battery drain problem caused by the recent app update. Users of Google Pixel phones can now expect their devices to function normally following the deployment of this server-side fix.
