If your Fairphone 5 videos are stuttering, freezing, or lagging during playback, you're dealing with a common but fixable annoyance. This can happen for a few different reasons, but most of them are software-related and easy to sort out.

Check Your Storage Space First

This is often the quickest fix. When your phone's internal storage gets too full, the system struggles to read and write video files smoothly, which causes dropped frames and lag. Videos, especially high-resolution ones, need a lot of free space to play back properly.

Head to Settings > Storage to see how much space you have left. I'd recommend keeping at least 5-10GB free for the system to operate without hiccups. If you're low, clear out old downloads, app caches, or consider moving photos and videos to an SD card if you have one installed.

Restart Your Fairphone 5

A simple restart can clear out temporary glitches that might be affecting your video player or other apps. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart."

If the screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart by holding the power button for about 10 seconds until the device powers off and then turns back on. Given the Fairphone's modular design, you also have the unique option of simply popping off the back cover and removing the battery for a few seconds, then reinserting it to power on.

Update Your Apps and Android Version

Outdated software is a frequent culprit. The app you're using to play videos might have a bug that's been fixed in a newer version. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Updates available to update everything.

More importantly, check for a system update. Fairphone promises excellent long-term support, so there's a good chance any performance issues are addressed in updates. Go to Settings > System > System update to see if Android 14 has a newer security patch or version waiting for you.

Look at Your Internet Connection for Streaming

If you're streaming video from YouTube, Netflix, or similar services, lag is almost always a connection problem. The video buffers because the data can't download fast enough to keep up with playback.

Try switching between Wi-Fi and your mobile data to see if the problem is isolated to one network. You can also run a speed test. For HD video, you generally need a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps. A weak Wi-Fi signal is a common cause, so try moving closer to your router.

Check for Overheating or Background Apps

The Fairphone 5's processor can throttle its performance if the device gets too warm, which will immediately cause video lag. Is the back of your phone hot to the touch? If so, stop using it for a few minutes, close any unused apps, and let it cool down.

Too many apps running in the background can also steal the resources your video player needs. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to enter the recent apps view, then swipe away any apps you aren't actively using. You can also check battery usage in settings to see if a particular app is working overtime.

Try a Different Video Player App

Sometimes the issue is specific to the app you're using. The default gallery app might struggle with a certain video codec or file type. I've seen this fix work when other steps haven't.

Download a well-regarded third-party player like VLC or MX Player from the Play Store and try opening your problematic video there. These apps often have broader codec support and more robust playback engines that can handle files the stock player stumbles on.

Clear the App's Cache and Data

If the lag is happening in one specific app, like Google Photos or YouTube, its stored cache might be corrupted. Clearing this temporary data can resolve playback issues without deleting your personal files or login information.

Go to Settings > Apps, select the problematic app, then tap Storage & cache. Tap "Clear cache" first. If the problem persists, you can try "Clear storage" or "Clear data," but be aware this will reset the app to its default state and you may need to log in again.

Review Your Power-Saving Settings

Power-saving modes are designed to extend battery life by limiting background processes and, sometimes, capping processor performance. This can directly impact video playback, making it choppy.

Go to Settings > Battery and see if any battery saver mode is enabled. If it is, try turning it off and then playing your video again. You might notice an immediate improvement in smoothness.

Consider a Factory Reset

If you've tried everything else and the lag affects every video across every app, a software issue might be deeply embedded. A factory reset will wipe your phone back to its original out-of-the-box state.

This is a last resort because you will lose all your data. Before you do this, make absolutely sure everything is backed up. You can initiate a reset by going to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). After the phone reboots, test video playback before restoring all your apps, just to see if the core issue is resolved.
