If your Fairphone 5 is starting to feel sluggish, you're not alone. While it's built for longevity, any phone can slow down over time as storage fills up and apps get more demanding. The good news is there are plenty of simple tweaks you can do to get it running smoothly again.

Let's start with the quickest fix that often solves temporary glitches and clears out stuck processes.

Restart Your Fairphone 5

Just like any computer, a simple restart can work wonders. It clears the phone's temporary memory and stops any background tasks that might be hogging resources.

Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the phone powers off, then turn it back on. If that doesn't work, you can use the unique Fairphone method. Pop off the back cover, remove the battery for 30 seconds, then reinsert it and power on.

Check Your Available Storage

When your phone's storage is nearly full, it has less room to operate efficiently, which can cause significant lag. Android needs some breathing room to manage apps and cache files.

Head to Settings > Storage to see what's taking up space. Look for "Large files" or use the cleanup tool if your version of Android has it. I'd start by clearing out old downloads, unused apps, and backed-up photos or videos.

Update Your Apps and Android Version

Outdated apps can have bugs that hurt performance, and newer versions of Android often include optimizations. One of the best things about the Fairphone 5 is its promise of 8+ years of updates, so you should always take advantage of them.

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Updates available. To check for the latest Android update, go to Settings > System > System update.

Manage Background App Activity

Apps running in the background can drain your battery and slow down your phone, even when you're not using them. Android gives you good control over this.

Go to Settings > Apps and select any app you suspect. Tap Battery and then Background restriction. You can set it to "Restricted" to prevent it from running in the background. Be careful not to restrict apps you need for notifications, like your messaging app.

Clear App Caches

Over time, apps store temporary data (cache) that can become corrupted or bloated. Clearing this can free up space and fix odd behavior without deleting your personal data in the app.

Go to Settings > Apps, select an app, then tap Storage & cache. Hit Clear cache. Do this for apps that feel slow, especially your web browser, social media apps, and camera.

Review and Remove Unused Widgets

Widgets on your home screen are convenient, but they constantly update in the background. Having too many, especially from data-heavy apps, can contribute to a slower feel.

Long-press on any widget you don't actively use and drag it to the "Remove" option at the top of the screen. Keep only the essential ones, like your calendar or a simple weather widget.

Enable Developer Options for Advanced Tweaks

Android's Developer Options menu has a few settings that can make animations faster, making the phone feel snappier. First, you need to unlock it.

Go to Settings > About phone and tap on Build number seven times. You'll see a message saying you're now a developer. Go back to Settings, enter the new System > Developer options menu, and scroll to the "Drawing" section.

Here, you can adjust the Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale. Changing these from 1x to 0.5x will speed up UI animations.

Monitor Your Battery Health

While the Fairphone 5's battery is user-replaceable and doesn't typically throttle performance like some phones, a very old or degraded battery can struggle to deliver consistent power. This can sometimes manifest as instability or lag.

You can check for general battery health in Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Look for apps with abnormally high usage. Since you can easily swap the battery, consider buying a spare official battery if yours is several years old and you notice it draining very quickly.

Perform a Network Settings Reset

If the slowdown seems related to connectivity, like slow web browsing or laggy app refreshes, your network settings might be the culprit. This resets Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth connections.

Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap on Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. You'll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair Bluetooth devices afterward.

Consider a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If you've tried everything and your phone is still painfully slow, a factory reset can wipe away years of accumulated software clutter. This will erase all your data, so it's absolutely crucial to back up everything important first.

Use Google's backup service in Settings > System > Backup. Once backed up, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). After the reset, you can restore your backup during the setup process.
