When your ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 shows a "USB Device Not Recognized" error or just doesn't see your mouse, keyboard, or external drive, it's a real roadblock. The issue could be with the port itself, a driver conflict, a power setting, or even a quirk with the laptop's performance software. Let's get it working again.

Restart Your Laptop

This is the simplest and most effective first step. A full restart reloads the USB drivers and resets the entire USB controller. I've seen this clear up temporary glitches more often than not. Make sure you select "Restart" from the Windows menu, not just putting the laptop to sleep and waking it back up.

Try a Different USB Port

Unplug the device and connect it to another port on your Zephyrus G16. This laptop has a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports. If your device works in a different port, the original one might be physically damaged or have a software-level issue. Pay attention to which type of port works, as it helps narrow down the problem.

Check Your Cable and Device

For devices that use a cable, like phones or external SSDs, try a different cable. Cables can fail, especially near the connectors, and sometimes a cable will charge a device but fail to transfer data. Also, try the USB device on another computer. If it doesn't work anywhere, the device itself is likely the culprit.

Update or Reinstall USB Drivers

Press the Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Expand the section labeled Universal Serial Bus controllers. Look for any entries with a yellow exclamation mark. Right-click on them and choose Update driver.

In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click the device and choose Update driver.

If that doesn't help, you can try uninstalling the problematic driver. Right-click it and select Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver on boot, which can fix corrupted installations.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

Windows tries to save power by putting idle USB ports to sleep, but this can sometimes prevent devices from being detected. To turn this off, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options. Click Change plan settings next to your active plan, then Change advanced power settings.

In the new window, scroll down and expand USB settings, then expand USB selective suspend setting. Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to Disabled. Click Apply and OK.

Check Armoury Crate and Performance Modes

Your ROG Zephyrus G16 uses Armoury Crate to manage performance profiles, fan curves, and the GPU MUX switch. Some users have reported that switching between performance modes (like Silent, Performance, Turbo) or toggling the GPU mode can affect USB controller behavior.

Open Armoury Crate and try switching to a different performance profile, then test your USB device. Also, if you've recently changed the GPU mode (like switching between Ultimate and Standard), a full reboot is required for the change to take full effect, which can also reset USB subsystems.

Run the Hardware Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in tool for this. Open the Start menu, type "cmd", right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. In the window, type the command msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic and press Enter.

Select Start to open the Windows Start menu.

This will launch the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to let Windows scan for and attempt to fix common problems, including those with USB ports.

Install All Windows and Optional Updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install all available updates. After the main updates are done, click Advanced options and then Optional updates.

Here, you might find driver updates specifically for your chipset or USB controllers from ASUS or Microsoft. Installing these can resolve compatibility issues that standard updates might miss.

Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager

Sometimes the USB controller just needs a nudge to re-detect everything. With Device Manager open (Windows key + X), click on the Action menu at the top and select Scan for hardware changes.

This forces Windows to immediately check all hardware buses, including USB, for new or changed devices. It's a quick trick that can bring a missing device back online without a restart.
