When your headphones stop working with your ASUS ROG Phone 9, it can ruin your gaming audio, music, or calls. The phone might not detect your wired earbuds, your Bluetooth headset might cut out, or you might get no sound at all. Let's get it fixed.

To rule out the headphones themselves, try a quick headphone test in the browser. If every tone plays cleanly, focus on the device settings covered next.

Restart Your ROG Phone 9

Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds or more until you feel the phone vibrate and the ROG logo appears. This force restart clears out temporary software glitches that can mess with audio drivers. It's the first thing I'd try, and it often works immediately.

Check the Physical Connection and Volume

For wired headphones, make sure the USB-C plug is fully seated in the port. The phone is large, so it's easy to bump the cable loose. Then, press the volume up button on the side to ensure you haven't muted the media volume. You can also check the on-screen volume bar to confirm it's not set to zero.

Clean the USB-C Port

Lint and pocket debris are a major enemy of the USB-C port. Take a wooden toothpick or a soft-bristled brush and gently clean out the port. Be careful not to damage the central connector pin. A clean port is the most common fix for wired headphones that aren't being detected.

Forget and Re-Pair Your Bluetooth Headset

Go to Settings > Connected devices > Previously connected devices. Find your headphones in the list and tap the gear icon next to them. Tap Forget. Then, put your headphones into pairing mode and reconnect them from scratch. This creates a fresh, clean connection profile.

Toggle Bluetooth Off and On

Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel and tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off. Wait about 10 seconds, then tap it again to turn it back on. This simple refresh of the Bluetooth radio can resolve a lot of intermittent connection or audio issues.

Check the Audio Output in Game Mode

If you're gaming, open the Game Genie overlay by swiping in from the side. Check the audio settings within the overlay. Sometimes, audio can be routed differently when X Sense mode is active. Make sure the output is set to your headphones and not the phone's speakers.

Disable Audio Optimization Features

Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > AudioWizard. Try switching between the different audio profiles or turning AudioWizard off temporarily. Some of these aggressive sound enhancements, while great for gaming, can sometimes conflict with certain headphone models and cause distortion or dropouts.

Update Your Phone's Software

Head to Settings > System > System update and check for any available updates. ASUS regularly releases updates that fix bugs, including those related to Bluetooth and USB-C audio. Keeping your phone on the latest available version of Android is crucial for stability.

Check for App-Specific Audio Issues

If the problem only happens in one app, like a specific game or music service, check that app's audio permissions. Go to Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Permissions. Ensure the "Microphone" permission is granted if you need chat audio.

Reset All Network Settings

If Bluetooth problems persist, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This will erase all saved networks and Bluetooth pairings, so you'll need to reconnect to everything. It clears out any corrupted network configurations that could be blocking a proper headphone connection.
