Slow Steam Deck downloads may finally be over. Valve shipped SteamOS 3.8.14 over the weekend, fixing a bug that capped WiFi speeds on routers broadcasting incorrect MCS (Modulation Coding Scheme) data. The fix addresses a years-old pain point for handheld PC owners.
MCS is the protocol that lets routers and devices negotiate connection speeds, signal strength, and capabilities. When a router reports bad MCS data, the receiving device drops to a slower fallback speed regardless of actual internet performance.
"Fixed an issue where Wi-Fi would be limited to lower speeds on certain routers that advertise incorrect MCS requirements," the SteamOS changelog reads.
Many Steam Deck owners reported bottlenecked or inconsistent connections toward the end of June, pointing to a bug in the previous stable build. The update landed in two forms: SteamOS 3.8.14 for the stable channel and SteamOS 3.8.22 for beta testers.
Both carry the same WiFi fix plus general security and stability patches, though Valve hasn't detailed the security changes.
This is the second SteamOS release in as many days. Valve pushed SteamOS 3.8.13 just before, fixing controller firmware update failures on some Deck models and resolving launch crashes in games including FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
The beta channel is already moving faster. SteamOS 3.8.21 and 3.8.22 introduce a quicker Steam Machine boot animation, a one-click audio settings reset, and a fix for a 30-second startup delay that stalled games on handhelds without active audio devices.
Beta updates are also improving third-party handheld support, fixing Guide button issues on the MSI Claw, restoring gyro on the Lenovo Legion Go, and adding controller support for additional OneXPlayer models.
It's unclear when the WiFi fix will land on Steam Machines. With the redesigned Steam Machine launching in 2026 and the Steam Deck still running SteamOS, Valve may split future updates across both hardware lines.
For now, Steam Deck owners can grab SteamOS 3.8.14 from System Settings. The beta channel offers 3.8.22 for those willing to risk some instability in exchange for the latest fixes.
