Ubisoft announced the acquisition of Amazon's March of Giants MOBA and its development team on December 15, 2025, with the deal expected to close on December 16, bringing Rainbow Six Siege creators back to the company. The deal includes the entire Amazon Games Montreal studio and intellectual property rights for the free-to-play game.
Amazon will continue marketing support through Twitch as part of the agreement. Ubisoft takes over development of the 4v4 multiplayer title, which features giant combatants commanding armies in tactical battles.
The acquisition reunites Ubisoft with key talent including Xavier Marquis, original creative director for Rainbow Six Siege, and Alexandre Parizeau, former Ubisoft Toronto managing director. Both led the March of Giants project at Amazon's Montreal studio, established in 2021.
March of Giants completed closed alpha testing in September 2025, with 98 percent of participants describing it as bringing something new to the MOBA genre. The game focuses on tactical depth and team play in lane-based combat similar to League of Legends and Dota 2.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot called the acquisition a "real opportunity" to compete in gaming's biggest arenas. The company plans a major update for 2026, including new giants and expanded competitive modes.
Amazon's sale follows its decision earlier this year to halt significant AAA game development. The tech giant faced setbacks with previous gaming ventures including Crucible and New World, despite launching Amazon Games Studios in 2012.
The Montreal team transition marks a full-circle moment for developers who originally left Ubisoft for Amazon. Marquis said in a statement, "Returning to Ubisoft brings things full circle," while Parizeau thanked Amazon for supporting the project's early development.
Ubisoft enters a competitive MOBA market dominated by Riot Games' League of Legends and Valve's Dota 2. Recent entrants like Gigantic: Rampage Edition and Seekers of Skyveil struggled to gain traction against established titles.
Financial terms remain undisclosed, though analysts estimate the deal value in tens of millions. The acquisition aligns with Ubisoft's strategy to expand its live-service portfolio amid industry consolidation.
March of Giants development continues for PC with no announced release date. The game represents Ubisoft's most significant push into the MOBA space, leveraging returning talent with proven success in competitive multiplayer gaming.
