Professional filmmakers gain access to Hollywood-grade virtual production tools this summer as Sony prepares to launch its XYN spatial capture platform. The cloud-based suite converts real-world locations into production-quality 3D computer graphics assets, targeting studios working with LED wall volumes for in-camera visual effects.

Sony will showcase the commercial launch of the technology at NAB Show 2026 in Las Vegas from April 19-22, where attendees can see demonstrations at booth C8401.

The system comprises three software components designed to streamline spatial content creation without specialized knowledge. A smartphone application called Spatial Scan Navi guides users through capture using improved reality overlays connected to Sony Alpha cameras, while Spatial Scan processes footage into 3DCG assets optimized for large LED displays.

Originally announced in January 2025, XYN (pronounced "Zin") remained under development until now. The summer 2026 release will initially target professional customers in the United States before expanding to gaming, animation, architecture, manufacturing, digital twins, and cultural heritage applications.

Integration with standard industry tools forms a core part of the strategy. The platform works directly with Unreal Engine and other 3DCG software while supporting HDR display output.

A dedicated plugin for Disguise media servers will also launch alongside the main platform, allowing high-quality assets generated by XYN to integrate smoothly into existing virtual production workflows. This partnership enables creative teams to generate synchronized audiovisual content at native 4K resolution using familiar production environments.

The AR navigation functionality assists real-time shooting by visualizing capture status to minimize missed shots, feeding directly into the 3DCG generation pipeline. Sony's approach leverages existing Alpha camera ecosystems rather than requiring specialized hardware, potentially lowering adoption barriers for mid-sized production houses seeking virtual production capabilities previously reserved for major studios.
