Microsoft issued an emergency Windows 11 patch to fix a botched March update that failed to install on many systems. The out-of-band KB5086672 release addresses installation failures that plagued the original KB5079391 optional update from late March.

The replacement build 26200.8117 arrived after Microsoft pulled the problematic March 26 update, which triggered error code 0x80073712 during installation attempts. Users reported the failed update would get stuck in download loops before crashing with the vague error message.

Windows Latest confirmed Microsoft released this patch as an "out-of-band" revision following widespread installation problems. The company told the publication "it's not aware of new issues in this replacement update."

This marks another instance where Microsoft has needed to fix problems created by its own updates. The FPS Review noted the pattern continues despite recent quality concerns following Windows 10's deprecation last fall.

KB5086672 includes all features from the original March release plus several improvements. Users gain support for 1000Hz refresh rate monitors, though most won't have compatible displays yet.

Smart App Control can now be disabled without resetting Windows, providing more flexibility for those who find the security feature too restrictive.

File Explorer's Preview panel receives fixes for internet-downloaded files like PDFs and DOCX documents that previously threw errors. Settings dialog boxes under Accounts > Other users now match modern Windows UI standards, and Sfc /scannow no longer reports false errors.

The cumulative update contains previous security and non-security releases along with quality improvements from KB5079473. It appears automatically through Windows Update for systems configured to "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available," though manual download remains available through Microsoft's catalog.

Microsoft's March productivity updates extended beyond operating system fixes. Excel received three major features including Edit with Copilot powered by Work IQ context, which automatically pulls relevant information from emails for users with M365 Premium or enterprise Copilot licenses.

Teams added organizational chart access through profile cards and external collaboration management tools during March. The communication platform also expanded AI-powered Audio Recap service support to seven additional languages.
