Microsoft's attempt to ban criticism of its AI strategy backfired this week when users flooded its official Copilot Discord server with variations of the term "Microslop," forcing the company to lock down the entire community space.
The software giant first filtered messages containing "Microslop" around March 1, according to reports from Windows Latest. Users who tried to post the term received automated moderation notices stating their messages contained "a phrase considered inappropriate by server rules."
Instead of suppressing discussion, the filter triggered immediate workarounds. Members began posting variations like "Microsl0p" using a zero instead of the letter O, which initially slipped past Microsoft's keyword detection system.
Other creative alternatives included "Sloppysoft," as users tested the boundaries of what would get through.
The company responded by restricting access to parts of the server, hiding message history and disabling posting permissions for many users before eventually locking down invites entirely. Visitors attempting to join now see a notice that "Invites are currently paused for this server," according to Kotaku.
The company claims the measures were temporary responses to coordinated spam attacks rather than attempts to suppress criticism. A Microsoft spokesperson told multiple outlets that
"the Copilot Discord channel has recently been targeted by spammers attempting to disrupt and overwhelm the space with harmful content not related to Copilot."
They added that blocking terms like "Microslop" was intended as short-term mitigation while implementing stronger safeguards.
The term itself emerged as shorthand for user frustration with Microsoft's aggressive AI integration across Windows 11 and other products throughout 2025. Critics argue the company has prioritized AI features over operating system stability while making Copilot difficult to disable completely on Windows systems.
This incident represents another chapter in Microsoft's complicated relationship with its AI rollout strategy. The Copilot Discord server launched in December 2024 with enthusiastic response but has since become a focal point for broader discontent about forced AI integration.
Members continued testing boundaries even after restrictions were implemented. PC Gamer's Andy Edser reported seeing messages like "How about we say Sloppysoft instead" and "I'm just here to say Microslop" during a brief check after initial lockdowns were lifted.
The software giant says it will reopen the space once stronger moderation tools are in place, following reports that users continued posting variations like "Sloppysoft" even after initial restrictions were implemented.
