Microsoft's Windows 11 Cross-Device Resume feature expands to Spotify, Office apps, and web browsing, bringing Apple Handoff-like functionality to Android users. The update reached Release Preview Channel this week, signaling an imminent public rollout.
Windows Insiders on builds 26100.7701 and 26200.7701 now gain expanded app support beyond the original OneDrive functionality. Users can resume Spotify playback, Microsoft Office documents, and Edge browsing sessions between Android devices and Windows 11 PCs.
The feature, first introduced in 2025, previously worked with OneDrive files opened within the last five minutes. Now it extends to five major Android manufacturers: Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Vivo. These brands also gain enhanced Copilot integration for opening cloud-stored files from mobile to desktop.
Cross-Device Resume operates similarly to Apple's Handoff ecosystem but focuses on Android-to-Windows continuity. When users switch from their Android phone to a Windows PC, they can pick up where they left off in supported applications without manual file transfers.
Microsoft's latest Windows Insider blog announcement confirms the expanded functionality. Build 26100.7701 serves Windows 11 version 24H2 users, while 26200.7701 targets the upcoming 25H2 release. Both include the Cross-Device Resume enhancements alongside other features like Smart App Control toggle improvements.
The Release Preview Channel placement suggests a stable channel release could arrive within weeks. Microsoft typically uses this channel for final testing before public deployment, though the company maintains a gradual rollout plan that won't reach all users immediately.
Android Authority reports the feature represents Microsoft's continued cross-platform strategy despite announcing in March 2024 that it would end support for Windows Subsystem for Android in 2025. The expansion demonstrates Microsoft's commitment to Android integration through cloud-based continuity rather than native app execution.
9to5Google notes the current app selection remains limited compared to Apple's ecosystem. Spotify support offers convenience, though Spotify Connect already provides similar functionality. Microsoft Office integration delivers practical productivity benefits for document workflows.
PCWorld confirms the feature works with cloud-stored files accessed through Copilot's mobile app on supported Android devices. This creates a seamless transition for work documents, presentations, and spreadsheets between mobile and desktop environments.
The update arrives as Microsoft strengthens its position against Apple's tightly integrated ecosystem. While Google and Microsoft have partnered on previous initiatives, Chrome browser synchronization remains absent from the current Cross-Device Resume implementation.
Windows Insiders can test the feature immediately through the Release Preview Channel. General availability depends on Microsoft's rollout schedule, with broader deployment expected in the coming weeks based on testing feedback and stability verification.
