After months of mounting frustration from its billion-user base, Microsoft is overhauling Windows 11 with performance fixes, reduced AI intrusions, and long-requested features like a movable taskbar. The changes represent a clear change following widespread complaints about system quality and excessive Copilot integration across the operating system.

Windows boss Pavan Davuluri outlined the improvements in a blog post titled "Our commitment to Windows quality," sent to millions of Windows Insider Program members. The announcement reads like an apology letter without actually apologizing, addressing complaints that have accumulated since Windows 11's launch in October 2021.

File Explorer will receive launch time reductions with substantially lower latency for search, navigation, and context menus. The company also promises to eliminate flickering issues that have plagued some users.

These performance improvements aim to make Windows 11 more responsive on devices with limited memory.

Copilot's presence will be significantly scaled back across the operating system. Microsoft is reducing unnecessary entry points starting with apps like Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Widgets.

"You will see us be more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows,"

Davuluri stated, focusing on experiences that provide genuine utility rather than blanket integration.

The taskbar will regain functionality removed in Windows 11's initial release. Users can right-click to reposition it to the top or sides of the screen, restoring a feature power users have requested since day one. This customization option had been among the most frequent feedback items in Microsoft's forums.

Windows Update control expands considerably under the new approach. Users will gain the ability to skip updates during initial setup (OOBE), restart or shut down without forced updates, and pause updates for longer periods. The company aims to reduce how often updates require restarts that interrupt workflow.

Microsoft may also reconsider its mandatory Microsoft account sign-in requirement during Windows 11 setup. Vice President Scott Hanselman publicly responded to criticism on X stating "Ya I hate that," though no final decision has been confirmed. Some internal teams reportedly support relaxing or modifying the policy for users who prefer local accounts.

Alongside these user-facing changes, Microsoft is breaking its annual update cycle with a special release called Windows 11 version 26H1. This version supports Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 processors and introduces a new internal platform known as "Bromine." Devices shipping with Snapdragon X2 chips will include this version out of the box while existing PCs transition from version 25H2 to 26H2 later this year.

The improvements begin rolling out in preview builds this month through Microsoft's Insider Program, with broader availability expected later in 2026.
