Apple has announced the availability of the second-generation HomePod in its refurbished store for customers in the United States. Although orders cannot be placed at this time, the refurbished models are set to be offered in Midnight or White color options at a price of $249, compared to the original price of $299.
According to Apple, the certified refurbished HomePods undergo comprehensive functionality testing, ensuring their performance. Additionally, each unit is carefully inspected, cleaned, and repackaged in a plain white box, accompanied by the necessary power cord and documentation. These refurbished HomePods are covered by Apple's limited one-year warranty and are eligible for extended AppleCare+ coverage.
The second-generation HomePod was introduced in January 2023. While it retains a design reminiscent of the full-size HomePod that was discontinued in 2021, it incorporates several noteworthy updates. These include a larger backlit touch surface and internal modifications, such as two fewer tweeters and two fewer microphones compared to the original model. The HomePod 2 also boasts the S7 chip, similar to the Apple Watch Series 7, enabling "more advanced computational audio." Additionally, it incorporates a U1 chip for seamless audio handoff from an iPhone and an indoor temperature and humidity sensor.
Although the precise availability date for the refurbished HomePods remains uncertain, it is expected that orders will commence within the next few weeks. Apple enthusiasts and music lovers alike can look forward to experiencing the enhanced features and performance of the second-generation HomePod at a more affordable price point.
