The Sims 2 Engine

You'll be able to control your Sims over their entire lifetimes, taking them from their first steps to their golden years. Guide them through "Life's Big Moments" and build their "Life Score" with every decision you make. And since every Sim will have its own DNA, their appearance and personality will be passed down through the generations. Life in The Sims 2 will take on a whole different dimension with an entirely new 3-D engine.

The game starts at the neighborhood level. Here you can create a housing development from scratch or start with one of three pre-made neighborhoods, each with its own theme. From there, you'll settle on a house and a family of Sims to control. Sims now have aspirations, wants, and fears. The wants and fears are the day-to-day things that occupy their minds, like wanting to see friends or get married and fearing death or being rejected for a kiss. Satisfy their wants, and they become more efficient at completing tasks you assign them. Realize their fears, and Sims become lethargic, cranky, and unresponsive to your commands. Aspirations are the big-picture things, like raising a family, becoming wealthy, and gaining knowledge. Succeed here and you'll be able to buy odd gifts for your Sim to improve his or her life, like a money tree that pays dividends or a "fountain of youth" water cooler.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to juggle all that if it weren't for the improved "Free Will" option, which makes it easier for Sims to fulfill their basic needs. The artificial intelligence of the game is noticeably improved; they won't turn on radios just as a family member is going to bed but, strangely, they do occasionally put their dishes on the floor.

Another big change in the series is the concept of the lifespan. Now Sims are born with the traits of their parents, families grow, and Sims grow old. Not only does this go hand in hand with aspirations (growing up is the first aspiration that a baby Sim will have), it provides a limited time with which your Sims can achieve their goals.

The pre-made households all have backstories that are smart spoofs of soap-opera plots--lots of scheming, romance, ghosts, and family fighting.

The game begins on a boat after the player creates a crew of characters. The crew can consist of one to six Sims. After the crew's creation, a slide-show starts of some mobile phone pictures that are taken showing the trip and also showing the storm that wrecks the ship. The player's starting Sim wakes up on First Beach on Shipwreck Island. The Sim finds books detailing the goals the Sim must follow to survive on the islands and escape. Shortly after exploring Shipwreck Island, the Sim discovers a second island, Airplane Island, this one considerably larger and more interesting than the first, and builds a raft to reach the new location. After arriving on the island, the Sim is reunited with some of their lost crew. The player then has the option to form a tribe of Sims if the relationship is strong enough. While exploring Airplane Island, the player finds radio parts that are required to complete a goal later in the game. A third island, Volcano Island, can be reached once the player finds the second beach on Airplane Island and builds a canoe. On Volcano Island, the player will discover the remains of the llama people. The player has the option to return to civilization on this island. They can either build a boat or travel to the volcano's summit and use the radio parts to send an SOS signal to a nearby ship. The player can also repair a broken ceremonial forge on Volcano Island that will cause a fourth island, Crystal Island, to rise out of the sea, however this is optional and is not required for the player to escape the island. The game contains many discoverable secrets, including secret areas such as Hidden Lagoon and the Secret Pirate's Cove. These areas can only be accessed once the player has gathered objects such as hieroglyphics and treasure map pieces, however this is a relatively extensive process.

Like earlier Sims expansion packs, Open for Business adds over 100 new objects to the game, many of which can be used at home as well as at work. With Nightlife, Sims 2 characters can go on dates in a new downtown area, full of restaurants and nightclubs that players can edit or rebuild as they desire. The success of a date is tracked, from moment to moment, and two Sims who hit it off will soon find new social interactions available to them, to help them develop their romantic relationships even further. Many of the expansion's new objects, such as the dining booth and the bowling alley, can be used to help Sims improve their relationships with one another while they have fun and quell other needs at the same time.

Nightlife is designed to enhance the gameplay of the Sims 2 in other ways, as well, by adding new options and features never before available in any Sims game or add-on. In addition to dates, Sims can band together to go on "Group Outings," which allow them to enjoy the downtown scene together, without all that heady romantic pressure. The expansion also adds a new life aspiration, Pleasure, which allows for characters who are truly devoted to the pursuit of happiness, and receive wants and fears based on their epicurean ideals.

Another major addition introduced by Nightlife is automobiles. If they can afford one, Sims can now own and operate their own cars - no more need to wait for the carpool or taxi cab to get them where they need to be. Other new objects include a poker table, a DJ stand, and many more lighting choices. As usual, most of these objects can be used in Sims' private homes (or dorm rooms), as well as in the new public downtown areas.

The Sims 2: University adds a new "Young Adult" life stage for Sims 2 characters, and a new "College Town" environment tailored to all their young adult fears and desires. When characters complete their teenage years, they'll now have the choice to move away from home, and into a dorm room at the university. To aid in this exciting but sometimes challenging transition, first-year students are required to live in the dorms, but if they do well there, they can eventually move into off-campus housing. The dorms are an excellent place to learn about college life and meet other students, however, so young adult Sims will want to make the most of their time there.

Dorm rooms are small and standardized, but the dorms themselves are large and bustling with an array of NPC characters, providing the player's scholarly Sim with all sorts of potential companionship, from friends and study partners to rivals and love interests. Once they've met some other characters and learned their way around campus, students may wish to move into a place of their own, or into a group house with other students. To do so, they'll need to earn some extra rent money, by picking up a part-time job, or perhaps hustling pool at the local hangout.

Many Sims 2 players may look back upon (or forward to) their college years as a time of social growth as well as scholarly dedication, and this expansion pack is also designed to account for the extracurricular aspects of collegiate life. Sorority and fraternity houses are excellent places to throw wild parties and truly cut loose, especially when they're equipped with the proper party-oriented objects. Characters can take turns doing inverted chug-a-lugs on the "Juice Barrel," for example, or engage in relaxed contemplation around the "Bubble Blower" apparatus. Opportunities to blow off steam abound, in fact, as young adult Sims can take part in pillow fights, toga parties, musical jam sessions, foot-bag circles, and even buck naked "streaking" runs.

As in the real world, hard work (and play) at college can lead to fresh perspectives and new opportunities. While progressing through school, studious Sims can earn an additional "want" slot. They'll also have a one-time opportunity to change their overall life aspiration. If they manage to keep their sanity and study hard enough, young adult Sims will eventually graduate to full adulthood, where they can truly reap the fruits of their collegiate efforts. College graduates can access new career paths, such as "paranormal," "science," and "show biz," each with its own appropriate ultimate reward object at the top of the ladder.

The Sims 2: University is the first expansion pack for the life simulation game The Sims 2. Your Sims are now young adults leaving home to live the ultimate college fantasy. Immerse them in college life as they become the Big Sim on Campus. They'll relish their new-found freedom as they party with friends, join fraternities and sororities and pull outrageous pranks. Your Sims will explore all the campus hot-spots as they frequent lounges, gyms, coffee houses and more. Help them fulfill new lifetime goals to unlock more rewards and reap all of the benefits of their university years.

The game starts at the neighborhood level. Here you can create a housing development from scratch or start with one of three pre-made neighborhoods, each with its own theme. From there, you'll settle on a house and a family of Sims to control. Sims now have aspirations, wants, and fears. The wants and fears are the day-to-day things that occupy their minds, like wanting to see friends or get married and fearing death or being rejected for a kiss. Satisfy their wants, and they become more efficient at completing tasks you assign them. Realize their fears, and Sims become lethargic, cranky, and unresponsive to your commands. Aspirations are the big-picture things, like raising a family, becoming wealthy, and gaining knowledge. Succeed here and you'll be able to buy odd gifts for your Sim to improve his or her life, like a money tree that pays dividends or a "fountain of youth" water cooler.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to juggle all that if it weren't for the improved "Free Will" option, which makes it easier for Sims to fulfill their basic needs. The artificial intelligence of the game is noticeably improved; they won't turn on radios just as a family member is going to bed but, strangely, they do occasionally put their dishes on the floor.

Another big change in the series is the concept of the lifespan. Now Sims are born with the traits of their parents, families grow, and Sims grow old. Not only does this go hand in hand with aspirations (growing up is the first aspiration that a baby Sim will have), it provides a limited time with which your Sims can achieve their goals.

The pre-made households all have backstories that are smart spoofs of soap-opera plots--lots of scheming, romance, ghosts, and family fighting.
