YouTube to Pull the Plug on Third-Generation Apple TV Channel in March 2021

In April 2019, Apple introduced a dedicated YouTube channel for Apple TV. The channel played trailers, clips, and other promotional material for movies and shows. As soon as the channel was launched, Apple started uploading content on it regularly and quite aggressively. The company shared video content related to TV shows and films that were trending or being talked about.

It was quite a well-structured YouTube channel that had different categories like ‘Indie Exclusives’, ‘Behind The Scenes With…’, Hot Trailers’, and ‘Ones To Watch’. Before the launch of the channel, Apple was known for offering content related to movies like trailers and BTS videos exclusively on iTunes. With this channel, the company made a conscious effort to offer media-based content on platforms apart from iTunes.

The channel had a good run. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end.

YouTube, reportedly, has plans to withdraw support for its Apple TV channel. After YouTube takes this move, third-generation devices will not be able to avail themselves of the service. Recently, YouTube started the process of informing its users that the Apple TV channel will cease to operate from March.

From next month, the YouTube app will not be available on third-generation Apple TV. Viewers will continue to have access to YouTube on devices like iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. One can also watch videos on YouTube from connecting an iOS device to any third-generation Apple TV.

The notice, that has been issued by YouTube, plays before videos and can be seen frequently on third-generation Apple devices.

While the channel will cease to exist in March, viewers can continue to play the content on YouTube on older Apple TV boxes with AirPlay. Of course, to do this you would need an iPhone or iPad at your disposal which would not be as convenient as switching on the Apple TV channel. The change will not reflect on current-generation Apple devices like Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. These devices operate on tvOS and provide access to the App Store where the YouTube app is still active.

This decision by YouTube reminds one of an announcement which was made in the year 2015 and resulted in YouTube discontinuing second-generation Apple TV units. This happened because of the then newly launched YouTube Data API that was found to be incompatible with a large number of streaming devices.
