Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Tricks: Enabling Full Screen Gestures

Xiaomi has come up with Gesture Navigation features for the MIUI Global Beta ROM, in case of the Redmi Note 5 Pro as well as the Mi Mix, similar to the gestures offered in the iPhone X. The gestures for the full screen are now available for the MIUI Global Beta ROM, 8.3.1 version and for the MIUI 9.5 or above, as reported in the MIUI Forum.

Replacing On Screen Buttons

Users can now operate their Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 phones by using these full screen gestures, instead of the conventional onscreen buttons for navigation. However, the user must enable the gestures by going to Settings and opting for Full Screen Display and then selecting the Full Screen Gestures. They can then start using the gestures.

Gestures on iPhone X

The iPhone X comes with a 19.5: 9 ratio and this eliminates a chin, so there is no place for the traditional home button. Apple, therefore, introduced the gesture navigation feature and eliminated the home button.

Following suit, Xiaomi has also introduced the same feature on its full screen smartphones. At present, the phones that are capable of this gesture feature include the Xiaomi Mi MIX, the MIX 2 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro, as also the Redmi Note 5.

Gestures are the Future

Most phones are now being made without bezels and come in full screen aspect, so it is likely that they will all sport gestures for navigation. As far as Android is concerned, going back in an app was done using the 3 buttons. But it is likely that many other smartphone manufacturers will start using gestures in the user interface within a short time.

Beta ROM

It is important to note that in order to use the Gesture navigation feature, users must install the Global MIUI, 9.5 Beta ROM. However, this is still in the beta stage. After enabling the feature, users must go through the tutorial in order to learn about the various commands.

Brief Tutorial

The gestures include a swipe action from the mid bottom of the screen if you want to access the Home. If you swipe and then hold on to the middle, you can open up a tray for multi tasking. In order to go back, you have to swipe starting from the left edge side of the screen. In case users have assigned some shortcuts to the smartphone navigation buttons, they have to continue using their conventional buttons and not the full screen gestures.

In addition, users might have to use a double swipe for full screen modes because, sometimes, users swipe without intending to as when playing a game. While playing a game or watching a video, the user has to use double swipe gestures in order to be effective.

Wrap Up

Full screens with 18:9 aspect ratios on the display are the latest trends among smartphones. Users get a larger viewing space, as compared with the earlier 16:9 ratio, especially when playing games or using a spreadsheet. Xiaomi has added the full screen gestures in order to these screens in order to substitute for the conventional navigation buttons. The feature will be optimized more in the future.
