We were always pretty certain that when it came to Android P we were only going to see it on Google Pixel or other smartphones that Google would have developed in the future. However, what we may have thought to be true seems to have been turned completely around.
How so? Well, Google recently stated that the Android P Developer Preview is going to be coming out for a couple of Pixel phones but, surprisingly enough, Xiaomi was listed as the second company to carry this update out so Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S can expect to see their update notification happen very soon.
Despite this, we would like to talk about what the update would bring, how it is going to be tweaked by Xiaomi, when it will come out and a number of other details as well.
Official announcement or a simple mistake?
The first time that we heard about this piece of information was a while ago when Xiaomi decided to post about this on their official MIUI forum. However, this post was taken down a short while after which made us think whether it was something official that was going to happen, a mere mistake or if Xiaomi did this on purpose to start a rumor. It did not take us long to find out that this was not a mistake and that this update was the real deal.
AOSP Android or MIUI change?
We are interested to see how XIaomi is going to tweak Android P in order to fit their design. Xiaomi is not shy to remove a couple of features that are present in an update just so that they can fit the company’s design and the uniformity that it holds across every device. So it remains to be seen what it is going to be like in real life rather than what we get to hear through the grapevine
Redmi Note 5 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S to first get the upgrade
From what we have heard, Redmi Note 5 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S are the first in line to get this update in the next couple of days. Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is supposed to get the update with almost all the features that already come with Android P, meaning that Xiaomi is not going to tweak that update as much as it has tweaked others in the past. This would not be the first update for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S since just a short while ago it got upgraded to MIUI 9.5 which updated the phone to the Android version of 8.0 Oreo.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is said to receive the same upgrade, as it has also been recently upgraded to the MIUI 9.5. This one is mostly centered on upgrades and features that one can find on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.
Now, when we think about the fact that both of these phones are going to get the Android P update sometime in the very near future, we start to identify a small problem. So even though in a nutshell Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has been updated to the Android Nougat version and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S has been updated to Android Oreo they will both be getting the same Android P update.
Now this may ruffle some feather since the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is not only Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone this year but also the priciest one out of the two meaning that user who bought the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S might have a hard time dealing with the fact that they would be getting the same features and new software changes as phone that costs less and does not have the same specs. We will have to see if users will be happy about this update overall and not complain about this difference.
What does Google Android P change as an OP?
We have been going on and on about how Xiaomi is going to get Android P but we never talked about what does Android P really bring to the table and it is about time that we do that. For starters, it deals a lot with changes in the design, mostly centered on the now popular top notch.
There is now an option right under “Device Theme” that lets the user decide which option fits them best, depending on their phone, ranging from a narrow top notch, a wide top notch, a tall display and other choices.
Apart from this, Google’s Android P comes with a refreshed look of the settings menu, the notification bar, the quick setting tab and many other, providing a lot of visual changes for the Android UI which are bound to get people to fall in love with the new design.
When will the update come out?
The date that we have been seeing a lot going around is the 8th of May. Now, if we are lucky and Xiaomi finished testing out the new Android P update to make sure that there are no technical hurdles that could, later on, cause trouble for the users then we can expect them to hold up their end of the bargain and release it then.
Until then, if you really want the update then you can download the Android P Developer Preview OTA but we do not recommend that you do this since the process is very complicated and it could lead to more problems than you already have if do not know how to do it the right way. So it would be best that you wait until Xiaomi releases their official version.
